For those that don't know, there is a very large Croatian, Serbian, Slovenian population in Los Angeles to include San Pedro, Long Beach, etc. There are also several Croatian Halls throughout the area that organize their communities for weddings, special events, charities, etc. I know the ability to speak with Melania means quite a lot to these families, especially those impacted by these fires. My grandparents immigrated to the USA from Ljubljana, Slovenia. They came here legally thru Ellis Island. They settled in Ohio, worked hard and achieved the American dream. They were so proud when they obtained US citizenship.

I live in Scandinavia and we understand each other well, but it's three different languages. I don't speak swedish or danish, but a swede or dane understands a lot of norwegian. The tone/ intonation is also very different among the countries.

Unfortunately Serbo-Croatian isn’t her native language but she is fluent. She grew up in Yugoslavia and in the video you hear her mention “the language of my childhood” her generation was the last one to be raised fluently in schools to learn that language, today Slovenian youth have little to basic knowledge. Slovenian is like Portuguese and Serbo-Croatian like Spanish. Very similar languages, but different. I say this to credit her, she gets a lot of backlash and she’s clearly at the very least fluent in 3 languages. She probably hasn’t spoken it in years and still sounds like a native Serbo-Croatian speaker.

Very few first ladies have accompanied the President on these type of fact finding trips, possibly Elanor Roosevelt was one of the few. Most first ladies do things like meeting with various charitable organizations which is fine, but expected.

I found myself smiling throughout as I watched this video. Though I don't understand what she was saying,(I am a Nigerian) talking to them in their native language is so comforting at a time like that. Respect to you Ma. A lady of pure class.
Unfortunately Serbo-Croatian isn’t her native language but she is fluent. She grew up in Yugoslavia and in the video you hear her mention “the language of my childhood” her generation was the last one to be raised fluently in schools to learn that language, today Slovenian youth have little to basic knowledge.
Slovenian is like Portuguese and Serbo-Croatian like Spanish. Very similar languages, but different.
I say this to credit her, she gets a lot of backlash and she’s clearly at the very least fluent in 3 languages. She probably hasn’t spoken it in years and still sounds like a native Serbo-Croatian speaker.

Woman was born and grew up in ex Yugoslavia where everyone spoke Serbo-Croatian, so not a big deal. Basically she only speaks English as a second language - and very poorly as she has lived in the USA for 30 years.
That's why she so cool and awesome! A very well educated strong powerful female as our First Lady! My greatest respect 🙌 towards her and my greatest sympathy for all my fellow Americans that is going through a hard time in Los Angeles! My prayers 🙏 go with you and beautiful families! Very few first ladies have accompanied the President on these type of fact finding trips, possibly Elanor Roosevelt was one of the few. Most first ladies do things like meeting with various charitable organizations which is fine, but expected.

It’s pretty amazing. It’s the most animated that I’ve seen her. She needs to be reserved as the first lady, but in that moment, you could see that she really wanted to interact with those people and she did. It must be a hard thing to be the first lady of the United States, and still be a little bit of an outsider. I’m glad that she could comfort the woman’s that she was speaking to.

Not all used "Serbo-Croatian" in Yugoslavia. It was native language in Bosnia, Croatia, Montenegro & Serbia & on Yugoslav federal level but Macedonians & Slovenes had their own languages. I am native "Serbo-Croatian" speaker. She in fact spoke Slovene mostly of time with somekind with some "Serbo-Croatian" sentences. I was able to hear "gde ste sada" i "nemaš ništa".
