I agree with Dorothy !! Having a new cooking appliance means you should learn about it, it's different enough to come to an expert like FF and get it done the right time and use the techniques. Thanks FF, I subscribed to the Best teacher /cook and I have a Cosori, too !!
I'm sure these are wonderful. Truly. But it seems like a ton of work. When I was a teen, I worked as a fast-food cook. We merely parboiled up tons of potatoes the day before then let them sit overnight in the fridge. The next day the skin scraped off like magic. We then used a french fry press to cut them into the same size and then we par-fried many quarts of them in hot oil. When an order came in for fries, we put an order of the partially-fried ones into the basket. Perfect. Of course, that requires a bit more planning but it was a restaurant. I am actually going to try to make them today using half my recipe (boil and cool) and then my air fryer for the final cooking process.
The thing is just rinsing them until they are not cloudy removes a large amount of the starch, but resting them in cold water is how you produce the best fries. Soak in the clear water for 2-3 hours in the fridge. Then you need to pat dry them thoroughly before air frying...

I do love homemade fries. The way I have made them for years is a two step frying method like you did. First to cook them through and second, at a higher temperature, cooking them to they are crisp. The only oil to use, ir fat, is rendered duck fat. It's as good as frying things in bacon fat. So I when I get an air fryer I will try it your way but with duck fat. There is a restaurant in my area that makes avocado fries. They first cut them into strips and bread them in a mix of quinoa and other seeds and then fry them. The outside is crispy and the inside are soft. The are seved with a chipotle mayonnaise and are very addictive! I will experiment and get back to you.

After I watched lots of videos about air fryers which you have uploaded, I just bought (online) Black+Decker 4L Digital Air Fryer, Model no:AIRF-OGB400-B5, it's around $155 and hope it will give a better output. if you can find a same model, you can try it too and share the experience. This is a great receipt that has become pretty-much my standard. It is quite important to cut uniformly, soak and dry the fries. After 10 minutes in my Cosori Air Fryer, I add them back to the bowl and sprinkle in the seasonings, whatever I am in the mood for. One trick that I do sometimes because I read that McDonald's soaks its fries in beef stock--and I cannot be bothered to do that--is to add a dash of powdered beef bouillon to the seasoning. After that, I put them back in the basket, turn up the heat, check them every five minutes and toss them in the basket without returning them to the bowl. Doing it this way, they turn out better than most restaurant fries: They are not as good as the best, but they are better than most. One way that I have been eating them recently is to immediately drizzle Okonomiyaki sauce and Kewpie Mayonnaise on them whilst hot and, then, sprinkle on some Japanese Furikake Seasoning. Also, with the right seasonings, they are delicious even without any extra sauce.
I do most of what you mention except soaking in hot water and flipping the fries but that's because I have an Actifry that has a stirring paddle. Going to try the hot water soaking to see if that improves the fries.
I have a tristar basket and two trays difficult to clean so my new Corsori will arrive today gone for the wifi model Always watch your vidios you give good tips and advice
You can also try this method for even crispier fries : simmer the potato fries with a 1/2 tablespoon of baking soda and 1 tablesppon of salt for 8 minutes before air frying. (The baking soda makes the outside of the potato rough so it gets crispier when you cook them in the air fryer ) . After simmering , drain and toss in a bowl with a few sprays of oil and then air fry for 20 minutes at 400F :)

I like your garlic and salt mix at the end, but the other, sort of ruins the healthy side although seems tasty with that dip you make.

I was thinking about getting an air fryer especially for French fries or sweet potatoes fries but we’re 5 adults so seeing this video makes me realize that an air fryer definitely isn’t for me ! Thanks for the video
Terrific video, Cathy. Very concise and clear. My first effort turns out brilliantly thanks to you. But a question. Does your technique work equally well with sweet potatoes and yams?
Just brought home an air fryer and found your channel. First cook, 3 red potatoes (what I had) cut and steamed for 15 minutes, dried, then tossed (shake & bake style) with oil/salt/garlic/basil/paprika and into the fryer at 400F for 8 min, toss then 8 min more. Result pretty good, but I think could be better. Maybe over steamed and under fried just a touch, but not a bad breaking in. Wings on deck in a couple hours. New tool, but the learning curve looks to be steep (aka fast).
Oh my gosh these taste really good thank you for teaching me because I have such a rude family they never wanna teach me anything and you being so kind and humble to teach us really is appreciated!
Kathy, hello from Australia. Great tips that work well, thanks. (Why do you wear your watch whilst preparing the food?) Try using a large zip-lock bag to add oil and spices (that saves cleaning up time) I use Canola Oil spray and either Italian mixed spice, or veggie spices, into the bag for coating! Shaking Air Fryer pan every five minutes and removing french fries (we call then chips) when the color is right. My Air Fryer is over 5 years old and is used many times in the week. Bye....John Murray
Hi John! I wear my watch pretty much all the time actually, and don't really think abt it for the videos. Do you find it distracting? And thank you for the tip! What is your favorite thing to cook in your air fryer?
@@empoweredcooks I am not distracted by the watch. Roast Potatoes are my favorite. (Well, I am Irish and have been in Australia 40 years!) Peel and pre-cook by boiling. Have them about golf ball size. Leave the skin on at times. Sometimes, I use whole carrots as well. Place in Air Fryer with Canola Spray and the magic happens!
Hi Gail, I am not sure. You could give it a try and the beautiful thing about the air fryer is that it's easy to add more time or do less time, based on the result you're looking for. Let me know if you try it and how it goes!
I've tried a few online methods and with okay to poor results. Your method is worth a try. Seems like a lot of work for fries though. I use my method which is peel, cut (starfrit pototo chipper), wash, dry, oil and then cook for 12 min at 400 and flip after 7 min. I eat in the dark while watching a movie so I get by. Once again I will try your method. You did a great job
A mix of garlic and dill Infused olive oil with roasted garlic and red pepper seasoning is great for fries A good dipping sauce is - 2 cups of mayo - 1 table spoon of sour cream - heavy drizzle of honey - one or two ounces of dinely chopped dill(use more or less dill dependent on how dilly you want the sauce -let sit in the fridge for a hour or two before use( you can use right away but the dill flavour wont be as intense as if you let it sit for a while.) This makes a wonderful dill sauce perfect for fries and onions rings, also really good on salmon or as a drizzle for hot wings
You mention shaking the fries in a basket in the middle of the cooking but my air fryer is an Instant Vortex Plus which is more like an oven, and it has "racks", rather than a basket. Can I use both racks and just switch them halfway through?
@@empoweredcooks Thank you. I was really struggling getting the basket to turn consistently. I had to "reset" it about 15 times during cooking, so I finally learned to use a little more force to insert into drive "wheel".
This is exactly how I prep chips for a regular oven, so this reassuring that the air fryer is going to work out for me. Just bought the Instant Vortex Plus 5.7litre. 😊

Guess what!!! My mom got an air fryer as a gift for her birthday 🥳🤗! I sent her the link to your channel 😊! I plan to get mine for myself for Mother’s Day 🙏🏿! Can’t wait to try this! And the fry sauce looks amazing 🤤! Thanks for sharing ❤️!
That is awesome! Yay for your mama (and you!).
@@empoweredcooks Right?! Definitely looking forward to putting these videos to use 🤗!
I was thinking about getting an air fryer especially for French fries or sweet potatoes fries but we’re 5 adults so seeing this video makes me realize that an air fryer definitely isn’t for me ! Thanks for the video
*THANK YOU.. MAKING THEM TODAY.. THEY LL SHOW ON FRIDAY. YUMM*
I’m an Idaho spud girl myself. I was born and raised in St. Anthony. Spud country 😀. Love your videos.
So cool!
The best fries after I followed your steps, happy kids and I’m shocked on the results. Thank you!!!
All I put was the oil and salt, still delicious
Terrific video, Cathy. Very concise and clear. My first effort turns out brilliantly thanks to you. But a question. Does your technique work equally well with sweet potatoes and yams?
Do you preheat the fryer when making fries?
Preheating is optional!
I just made french fries using my air fryer. They turned out perfectly!
Yay! I'm so glad Karla! ❤
OMG!! I Made these for kiddos and ended up having to make 3 more batches for them and me cause they were soooo awesome!!! Thank You for your recipe!
Sounds like you're doing great to me!! Way to go!
Well I must say these were the nicest chips I've had. So nice I'm making them again tomorrow
@dankbuds I am British. What Americans call fries we call chips. Educate yourself
@dankbuds and what Americans call chips the British call crisps
Oh my gosh these taste really good thank you for teaching me because I have such a rude family they never wanna teach me anything and you being so kind and humble to teach us really is appreciated!
You are very welcome!
Kathy, hello from Australia. Great tips that work well, thanks.
(Why do you wear your watch whilst preparing the food?)
Try using a large zip-lock bag to add oil and spices (that saves cleaning up time)
I use Canola Oil spray and either Italian mixed spice, or veggie spices, into the bag for coating!
@@johnmurray9217 yummy! I actually did some this weekend with sweet onions, peppers, and sausage. SOOO good!
The guests shall definitely leave if you take so much time preparing fries 😊
I would love to make some sweet potato fries, do you think this recipe would work regarding the soaking, timing. temp etc?
Hi Gail, I am not sure. You could give it a try and the beautiful thing about the air fryer is that it's easy to add more time or do less time, based on the result you're looking for. Let me know if you try it and how it goes!
I've tried a few online methods and with okay to poor results. Your method is worth a try. Seems like a lot of work for fries though. I use my method which is peel, cut (starfrit pototo chipper), wash, dry, oil and then cook for 12 min at 400 and flip after 7 min. I eat in the dark while watching a movie so I get by. Once again I will try your method. You did a great job
finally! I nice and informative video of HOW to do this! thank you so much! loving the content and flow
Thank you :) This is the best video I've found for homemade Air-Fryer Fries.... :) Much appreciated.
Thanks Cathy for another great tutorial.
You are so welcome!
We use a mandoline to slice our fries for consistency. For steak cut fries I hand slice. Thanks for your tips. 🙂
I thought I knew how to handle potatoes! But you explained it the best way anyone can
Can we also use the top rack to Cook more fries?
Shout out to Idaho spud girl!! I’m a spud guy born and raised!!! Thank you for the video
A mix of garlic and dill Infused olive oil with roasted garlic and red pepper seasoning is great for fries
A good dipping sauce is
- 2 cups of mayo
- 1 table spoon of sour cream
- heavy drizzle of honey
- one or two ounces of dinely chopped dill(use more or less dill dependent on how dilly you want the sauce
-let sit in the fridge for a hour or two before use( you can use right away but the dill flavour wont be as intense as if you let it sit for a while.)
This makes a wonderful dill sauce perfect for fries and onions rings, also really good on salmon or as a drizzle for hot wings
Thanks for the tip! Can't wait to try it!
You mention shaking the fries in a basket in the middle of the cooking but my air fryer is an Instant Vortex Plus which is more like an oven, and it has "racks", rather than a basket. Can I use both racks and just switch them halfway through?
Yep! Just rotate the racks!
@@empoweredcooks Thank you. I was really struggling getting the basket to turn consistently. I had to "reset" it about 15 times during cooking, so I finally learned to use a little more force to insert into drive "wheel".
Followed this down to a tee. Not going back to frozen fries EVER. THANK YOU FOR THIS! 😍
WOO HOO! Glad you enjoyed!
Plus Frozen are inconvenient to keep on hand. You never have them when you need them.
Dip them in Frisch's Big Boy tartar sauce. It's so good.
Just scrubbed mine...going to make some today.
Thank you
Cathy, thank you for all the great tips and recipes. I tried your fries and they were perfect!
Yay! And you are so welcome!
Very nice. My go to seasoning is Lawry's Seasoned Salt if not using a dip. Sea salt with my favorite dip which is Bob's Bleu Cheese salad dressing
Oh that sounds yum! I'll have to try that soon!
My fave spice for French fries is Herb de Provence (and salt and pepper) 2nd favorite is good old Italian seasoning (and salt and pepper).
Delicious! My daughter loves Herb de Provence too!
Great advice. Just bought my first air fryer
This is exactly how I prep chips for a regular oven, so this reassuring that the air fryer is going to work out for me. Just bought the Instant Vortex Plus 5.7litre. 😊
Oh my gosh! I loved it. 100% recommend
Omg I'm about to make this thank you so much for the recipe ❤
Great video! So you soak the potatoes in hot water. Many people soak in cold water for 30 mins +. I guess either way works to remove excess starch. 👍
That is correct
Going to try this with the air fried chips I'm making today.
I just slathered them in Olive Oil. Pre-seasoned with Garlic Powder, Salt, Pepper, and Smoked Paprika.
