"Hotel California" (IMHO) is an allegory using the Hotel representing the whole California scene.....sex, drugs, the corrupt music industry. He can get in to the "scene" there, but can't get out. "We are all just prisoners here, of our own device".......so well written!
There's a few ways to see it, l always thought of it as a type of purgatory. Where he died and was trying to escape all the mistakes he made when alive. Getting caught up in the glitz and glamor populated with drugs and alcohol and other bad choices. Driving, heavy head, needs a nap, shimmering light in the distance, voices from down the corridor, always gives me shivers like a good ghost story.
Check out "Take it to the Limit", "Lyin Eyes", "Take it easy" from the same concert. With the Eagles, everyone could sing and play different instruments. And they were perfectly coordinated. Also check out Journey's live "Escape" concert. Also a great band with the best singer in my opinion, Steve Perry
The lyrics are planned. But the end that's all instruments, that was NOT planned. That was amazing musicians being able to read read each other and musically perfectly responding. ❤
_You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave_ If you know, you know; that line sums up the entirety of the 1970's for me. The broken, disillusioned children of the 60's... not all of us made it, but all of us saw the world more raw and unvarnished than any generation before or since, the veil was ripped away.
This is a metaphysical thing. It's a mindset. But the extro.... the LIVE extro that was recorded here in Maryland is universally accepted as the ultimate version of this song.
I thought seeing live in 1997 was on I never saw footage of but instantly, I knew it was the "Live in 1977" iconic one. Clearly as the video starts is has on the screen the location, date and year. Hope you can keep it posted correcting it or not by doing this iconic video.....
Hey Bimu, How are you doing these days? I haven't been on here too much lately, life happens! I'm so happy to see you steadily climbing and are almost at two thousand now, it won't take you long to reach that goal you are after! Exciting reaction to the Eagles! One of my favorite bands of all time! Deb
If you like drummer's that can really sing you need to listen to Phil Collins and his live performance from maybe of his song IN THE AIR TONIGHT." It truly is incredible!¡
If you would like to see another MASTER vocalist and drummer, I highly suggest you do "RAINY DAYS AND MONDAYS" by The Carpenters. And I used to live right next to a "Hotel California" in Palm Springs CA. But I have no idea if this was an inspiration. It was an incredibly mysterious hotel though. For real.
They wrote this song without a specific meaning, mysterious, letting the listener decide for themselfs a meaning. It is not about a hotel. Colitas mexican slang for marijuana bud and the smell of marijuana rising through the air. For me the song is about vice, debauchery and hedonism : bad or immoral behavior that involves sex, drugs, alcohol, etc. When you are experiencing the pleasures of evil you are in heaven but know it is actually being in hell. Your addiction to self pleasure and drugs you can stab it with your steely knife but you just can't kill the beast. You can check out but you can never really leave it. Human behaviour for pleasure is very hard to resist.
Great band. Every band member could sing.

Thank you! So many people get this wrong!
I love watching people react to this for the first time. It never gets old and neither does this song! Great choice! Nice reaction. 🌺✌️
Thank you !
This is from 1977, not 1997. No auto tune, pure talent.
Agree. Plus they're all playing instruments not using computers for the instruments. Wow! What a concept. 😊
If you like drummers that sing Phil Collins in the air tonight live is a must❤

👌👌👌
This is parallel to Phil Collins "In The Air Tonight" live video. But THIS was decades before THAT video.
The song is about the depths that you have to go to become famous in Hollywood. Either as a musician or an actor.
Thanks for visiting and for the note!

Take it easy live 1977 Washington dc
for me, the song has always been about addiction and getting sucked in and not being able to leave the trap that you created.
Great way to put it !
Warm smell of colitas rising up through the air.....meaning-the aroma of young buds being smoked.
