      Yup, except most american v8’s are a more reliable vehicle then an american 6,or 4. It’s better for the envirnment to keep a v8 running to 200k miles then replacing your car every 20,k miles. A reliable v8 truck is less nuisance then replacing parts over and over on an unreliable vehicle,

      777Dubliner everyone has an opinoin, including mechanics. I’m telling you now those turbo motors are NOT more reliable then the v6 non turbo. Theres never been a turbo car in the past 20 years thats been reliable over 100k. Meh, you can do your own homework of youd like. Btw the ford turbo motors are proving to have problems also. The turbo vws... well we all know the reliabilty difference between the vr6 and the 1.8 turbo. Germans made cars that pollute less by slapping turbos on them and we followed suit. German motors are massivly unreliable..all for the sake of a few more mpg and cheap hp.

      the random lizard is an executive, and it is a byproduct from the oil refining process. Sure its toxic, every refined oil product (gasoline and diesel, you may know them) is toxic. Gasoline was once considered a waste product.

      @Lugubriously gasoline is way more readily accesible. its everywhere. it doesnt matter if its a solid or a liquid. also, gasoline isn't a waste product... its a petroleum product. as is petcoke. petcoke is just the last thing you can make from crude oil after all the other products have been refined out of crude. its basically the dredgings of the refinery.

They have also refined oil in the area for years too. Standard oil was a large company around there. Chicago and north west Indiana has been an industrial zone for over a 100 years. According to multiple EPA studies and analyses, petroleum coke has a low
    health hazard potential in humans. It does not have any observable
    carcinogenic, developmental, or reproductive effects. During animal case
    studies repeated-dose chronic inhalation did show respiratory inflammation due to dust particles, but not specific to petroleum coke.

    • @alexiler7287
      @alexiler7287 10 лет назад

      Wind turbines are a joke, they produce little power in the day when needed and a lot of power around 3am when they're not needed. I realize pet coke is used for making steel, but why does that matter? Nuclear is one of the best sources of energy out there, people don't like it though because they don't realize it's also very safe. The plant in Japan went off because they built it too close to the shore, cherinobl went off because the operators were incompetent, none of the nuclear plants in the us will ever have either of those problems.

    • @StrategicGathering
      @StrategicGathering 10 лет назад +1

      Alex Iler It matters because steel is a must have product. Nuclear Power is a great source of power, but the radical environmentalist will not support Nuclear Power, and therefore make it harder and harder to use.. Another great source of energy is hydro, but here again environmental groups like the Sierra Club are determine to stopping hydro power.

      There are a few ways that Coal power plants obtain new coal to their facility, IE Trains, Barges, and Trucks. Coal and Coke Power plants do regular maintenance to their facilities about 2 times a year. During these times, the power plant can not obtain new coal to their facility and need to have a healthy stock to keep their generators operating. To combat this, plants have a reserve coal yard which they can utilize during these outages. The pile usually has about 45 to 60 days worth of coal for these instances.
      Every now and then, there are unexpected situations that take down their Rail Car Dumper or Barge Unloader. These piles are there to be able to keep the Power Plant operational. To answer your question, if you were to keep these piles away from the plant it would render them useless in an emergency. Now there is no reason not to keep them in a quarry if they are located next to one.
      The process of taking a unit down is not easy to do. They schedule these outages months and sometimes years ahead of time. Unless you have a serious situation, these units need to keep running to make sure the power grid is unaffected.
      I work for a company that specializes in the reduction of airborne coal dust. There are options and safe chemicals out there that will reduce the dust by a large margin. By viewing this video, it looks like BP Whiting has chosen not to purchase this equipment, most likely because it is somewhat costly.

    They were storing the stuff in Detroit last year but the city ran them off. The same company is back this year seeking a special permit to store sand and lime in piles 100 feet high. The current variance allows for 10 foot high piles that must be shielded visually by a fence.

    I love vice but calling this propaganda journalism is sad.
    The producer should have found the other side of the argument so viewers can make their own decision.
    Vice, if you're going to make a difference you need to at least act like you are reporting rather than giving opinions.

    To recap:
    1) There is no evidence this substance is causing harm to anyone in South Chicago.
    2) Local regulatory bodies are enforcing preemptive handling policies with a compliance window of 2 years.
    3) The current sites reside within an industrial zone, thus no new or exceptional environmental concerns (E.g. ground water) are present.
    Wow, riveting investigative journalism. Now that I've watched it, can anyone explain why I should care?

    The Steel mills in Gary IN Do employ people. The entire NW Indiana region commutes to the industry hub of the Lakeshore. It is a vital economic zone of the Calumet region. Ask people who actually work in these facilities, not just the activists.

      I guess VICE was too scared to go to Gary, or just didnt care enough. I also loved how the lady said , "Its from Indiana, it should stay in Indiana". Yeah, mean ol' NW Indiana pickin on lil ol Chicago. Then the thing about Whiting being white, and how they dont want it in their neighborhood, THEY HAVE THE REFINERY THERE YOU IDIOT! I drive that way all the time, and Petcoke or not, you can't polish a turd. They should build a container for it thou.

    The first statement in this video is the truth, Us as Americans want to consume megawatts of electricity, drive our automobiles thousands of miles a year beyond what is needed for work and to live meaning for pleasure and leisure yet we don’t know how to deal with the consequences of our lifestyles and I don’t see many people willing to give it up to rid our planet of this issue.

    I love how Illinois people think that it's not adversely effecting anyone in Indiana, Whiting in particular. I live in Whiting and it IS in my backyard. And it IS effecting
    everyone here in Whiting/Robertsdale adversely. It's not just the southsiders. The pet coke is on everything and I give up keeping my car washed and waxed. I give up keeping my house windows reasonably clean. I give up on my rain barrel and my little garden pond that has a constant oil sheen on the water and pet coke silt at the bottom. BP and KCBX need to held accountable for this. And Tom Wolfe is so full of shit when he says it's not harmful or toxic. I'll bet he lives in a 5 million dollar house in some gated community FAR from this problem. We should all get together and dump truckloads of pet coke in his backyard and see what he says about it then.

    We have same thing happening in Australia, where the EPA are state government organisations and their role is to produce the guidelines, however, they have no interest in receiving reports of breaches from the public, investigation or prosecution breaches. They may as well not exist as they have no real purpose.
