Jason is one of those athletes that is totally down to earth. Isn't preaching the in your face CrossFit message. He also said something that has been lost lately and that is the functional fitness. Being fit so that you can enjoy other physical activities and play with your kids. Awesome person and no ego.
I love this episode. Jason always been one of the great athlete and role model of CrossFit. What he said about being an example for his kids really hit the spot for me. I use what I learned from CrossFit in my daily life and also in helping my patients to better themselves.
Dang, what a great episode! Appreciate the insight Jason offers as an athlete, coach, business owner, but most importantly as husband/father. Love seeing in the comments how much of us in the Butter-Gang do jiu-jistu! #keepitbuttery 🥞🥞🥞
I feel like CrossFit does help with making you more determined to do anything . There is a lot I wouldn’t have done until I started my workout journey . Now I feel like I can do anything !
Wow. I admire Jason work for so long and your video hit the nail on many things for me. Well, you asked. 1. As an affiliate owner in Latin America, who quit his career to change life through fitness, on a market/industry that does not pay enough for fitness services, from Crossfit I would love them to know the owners and give us priority whe opportunities to work directly for them are presented. On the other hand I was so pleased to identify many things that we considered as problems in our gym are normal. In NCFit, we can't allocate more than 17 people in 1 class, we can't drop bars either and also use pads,... And they are a very successful business, So we're going to change our perspective and keep striving to raise the bar. Thank you
Thank you for the fatherly input Jason. As a new Dad, the little one is starting to follow us (me and mom) to the gym sometimes and we see she’s starting to understand a little bit of what we’re doing, I’m mean, she’s 17months old but we also have a little home gym so she’s exposed to exercising no matter what. We as parents are thinking of waiting her foot ask us to workout with us. Would love to hear more about this topic, if anyone else out there as some experience. Cheers Leo
This episode was emotional for me. I have CPTSD from repeated trauma and assault. Having people who are supposed to love you the most physically harm you in unthinkable ways does a thing or two to you. I have an autoimmune disease that professionals contribute to sustained long-term fight-and-flight mode from trauma stressing out my immune system causing dysfunction. Fitness and martial art have been my saving grace, the mat, the gym, they have been my outlet for repressed rage, sadness, resentment and also a growing ground for confidence, self-worth and self-belief. I have my own linguistics and cultural consulting business and I'm lucky that I get to provide language services for immigrant victims and mental health patients, and in my free time I'm a personal trainer and a Hapkido instructor but I do dream one day to bring it altogether and have a gym/martial art school/mental health center/domestic violence shelter/youth advocacy/employment center for those like myself and seeing Jason pretty much do that, caring for people's health, wellness, livelihood and community, it's inspiring. It's a good day to be alive.
Khalipa is one of the best minds in the business. I really appreciate the thinking on kids and CrossFit, practical and approachable. I used to travel to CA for work and always stayed in Mountain View so I could drop in to NCFit. The team there is awesome and I miss going.
This is the best episode! Well done bros, and thanks Jason for the positivity and awesome perspective! Maybe this is a springboard to an episode about Miranda, Julian, and Street Parking!
He actually helped me when it opened my affiliate in 2010 and we are still kicking! Although this affiliate fee is getting outrageous and expensive and it actually kills affiliates growth. Thinking about dropping affiliate
5 minutes in and two things that struck me as "This is the gym I wont't to be at" 1) Clean showers and bathrooms and the most important 2) No dropping of weights. Being raised at an old traditional gym where dropping meant a harsh scolding, many gyms today are horrible to visit.... Khalipa for President 💪
Jason is such an inspiration! His coaching, fitness, and mental fortitude is something else! But the love he has for family and his giving nature are what I admire most about that man!
NCFit reminds me a lot of Filadelfia Fitness here in Vallenar, Chile. They're not affiliated but nevertheless got Rolando Gonzalez running several years in a row for the crossfit games in the 60+ category... It just take heart and sinew to succeed.
Really enjoyed this episode and the insight and tips from a successful gym owner. We're getting ready to open a gym in our small CO town! Like Jason, we have the dream to grow our space into a gym/wellness space (my husband is a PT). We spent a lot of time weighing the pros and cons of affiliation and what would best serve our business and town. It seems like CrossFit is heading in a great direction with the changes they've started making to better serve affiliates, but for small gyms, the fee is hefty. Maybe they would consider having a scaled affiliate fee based on member numbers? The set-rate style of the fee makes it hard for the little guys to get started. We ultimately decided to affiliate because we believe in what CrossFit can do for individuals and the community, and look forward to seeing how it continues to grow and evolve.
Really enjoyed this video. I just got into CrossFit a couple of years ago and found it so beneficial to my life. I recently became a father as well and I can’t wait to see my son get older and hopefully draw interest in this sport. Keep up the great work guys 👏🏽
I love that you guys got to roll on the floor and I had no idea Jason’s a purple belt in Jiu-Jitsu!! I was a taekwondo fighter for years when I was younger and used to roll with some people hanging out after class. I’d love to see you guys give some more love to different sports on a professional level like volleyball, tennis, skateboarding, roller derby, everything!!!!
I love watching the elite athlete, however it is the everyday athlete that makes CrossFit. When the Open rolls around it would be cool to see you guys drop into gyms around the country/world and do the Open with everyday athlete. Here’s your invite to 817 Crossfit in Fort Worth.
Fully agree with the class registration and cap it at a certain limit. Ive been to a box where they allowed 30+ people in a small area and it was just tough.
Another great video! BJJ and Crossfit is a great combination, I just started Crossfit last year but I practice BJJ/Judo for over 15 years. Crossfit gave more gas to my BJJ trainings.
I think crossfit needs to lower the price so more gyms join. In my area there is 2 crossfit gyms with 6 gyms that are like "crossfit" but aren't affiliates.
The criticality of using defined business practices in the realm of box operations cannot be overstated. A box is a center for developing community and improving fitness, but it is still a business at the end of the day. You can do well by doing good, and a big part of that is making sure the business aspect is adhered to universally. As far as the price of affiliation - every group has a membership fee, whether that's monetary or not. I think Jason has it right in that there is a significant organizational level change in process and that they will be on a steep upward climb. But that climb is happening.
@@JasonKhalipa most definitely, at 62 I hiked the Tahoe Rim Trail with a friend last summer. Looks like you've got a solid handle on what gets your time.
A lot of coaches don't take the classes that they teach! I know I was considering doing other programming at one time, but the benefit of really knowing the stimulus of the workout and the soreness of athletes each day is just too great. Plus class is always more fun and pushes you to go harder. Very cool to see a former Games athlete (and Crossfit legend) doing a class!
Hey Rachel, definitely agree. Our team at NCFIT and I regularly take classes or test the workouts ahead of time. Its one of the key factors for our NCFIT Collective programming.
I enjoyed the video. I already train martial arts (other than BJJ) and workout at a non-crossfit gym and I've been toying with the idea of expanding my training by either trying a crossfit gym in place of my normal gym or joining a BJJ school for a while. I'm likely to pull the trigger on one of the two options after my trip to Europe next month so I found the video Jason doing both very interesting.
Maybe I am wrong. Maybe it's me that has changed. As a 9 year CrossFit member I wish I could somehow convey to everyone that the programming these days isn't fun. It seems many gyms buy programming or follow someone's program. I get it. It's the easy button of running a CrossFit gym. Except that programming is too generalized in my opinion. They don't know what equipment their customers have so they program for the lowest common denominator of gym equipment limiting variety. They also seem programmed with a competing angle in mind. It's very formulaic. I know progressive overload and strength cycles are beneficial, but they aren't fun. I dislike walking into the gym and knowing for the next 10 weeks I'm going to be doing the same movements. I think the HWPOs, Mayhems, and PRVN fitness of the world has taken the fun out of CrossFit. People go to their CrossFit gym because they love the people there, but the culture of CrossFit has changed, it's losing it's buzz, it doesn't seem to draw as many people in or hold on to the people that do try it out. It was fun not knowing what today's workout is going to be. Are we going to practice a skill? Are we going to run backwards? Cartwheels? Tire flips? Ooooo a "girl" workout! Nope. Now it's going to be the same movement you did last week with a different rep scheme at a different percentage of your max. You have 15 minutes. We will finish with a 10-20 minute wod after the strength session so that it all fits neatly into an hour class session. Then we will see what the next focus will be at the end of this cycle and repeat those movements for the next couple months.
Maybe this gets answered. Just started watching- what are the benefits of being an affiliate? Also, clean CrossFit gyms and bathrooms is important. The handstand walls is a good tip.
Show more Master’s, Adaptive and teen content might help. Also, the stories of like Khloe or other first responders, nurses, doctors and everyday people doing CrossFit. Your local gym is an AMAZING facility and you film a ton of content there. The owner is supportive of the channel. Highlight them and their every day members.

Had a sneeky pause of your Google search bar before you started typing!!! First up on the list .... Is Marston Sawers single? Then How do you make butter?? Heber Cannon Hair Routine??? I'd like to think they all just were in there au naturel! Top work Bros.
Mars content was great this video. Very pleased with that and the rest of the video! Hoping to open my own box one day so this was valuable information!
great content right here! Jason is an amazing athlete and to top it off he knows how to run a successful business. Jason thanks for sharing some important tips on how to approach training with family and kids. I've wanted to get my son started on some exercise programs with me and he has asked, but I was afraid my love and excitement for fitness my push him too much and make him go the opposite way. Short and sweet AMRAP''s that matches their attention span
I work out alone on base because i'm broke and overseas, but I think crossfit as a community has a strong future. It's clear everyone loves the athletes, and seeing fitness be made fun and celebrated. But Crossfit as a business needs some serious coaching. Constantly changing the season schedule confuses potential fans, sponsorships were a good idea but no one listened and just fire missioned them over it so it might have been smarter to do some brands considered healthy. The business model exists already, tons of gyms operate massive franchises, but none of those also run a championship. I think inevitably the sport and the community should divide to split the cost to keep consumer cost low and incentive athletes on ticket sells, sponsorships, and merchandise. I also don't have a business or economics degree, so I could be totally wrong.
The price is definitely a challenge especially in today’s economy vs gyms that have both machines and oly set ups. I think crossfit will make it but just like Mr Olympia weekend the games are truly a niche…and a good one 👍🏼
CrossFit needs to do more to help affiliates on their community. Starts with a lower fee, but there needs to be a clear and consistent message across CrossFit and it’s regional hubs about how CrossFit is for everyone. Need a clear separation between CrossFit and The CrossFit Games (competitive element). People who don’t know CrossFit will often see the competitive element first and be put off. We need a clear message about how we can adapt everything to anyones unique situation so they aren’t frightened to step into the gym.
I agree with your thoughts. I showed up as a newbie and after two weeks they were encouraging handstand push-ups. I was like “I’m 40, why would I try and blow out a shoulder?” The Games are the advertisement for the sport, and I’m my opinion gymnastics needs to be eliminated because it has nothing to do with fitness and it excludes at least 50% of people, probably more.
Nothing but respect for the business Jason has built. That did not happen by accident! However I personally believe he should be paying the affiliate fee. Even if it's just for one of his locations. He may not agree with some of the past events and issues that have plagued CrossFit. But he is following the aim using the methodology and providing the prescription that CrossFit defined and created for the rest of us. Not to mention his hard work and success in the sport of CrossFit opened up many opportunities. I believe the least he could do is pay the $3000 a year. The example that would set to the rest of the community would mean a lot. It would help CrossFit as a company as well. It's seems that CrossFit is trying to do the right thing as a company. Enought time has passed to demonstrate this. Pay the fee and embrace that what CrossFit provides is bigger then one man, or even the corporate company
I own CrossFit Westwood and every year when the affiliation fee is due it is quite frustrating to pay. I always debate if it is worth it. With that being said, each year we make more than $3,000 in drop ins alone so I would say the cost is worth it. Plus I love CrossFit and it has changed my life so I guess I am okay with paying them $3,000 per year on top of this $3,000 actually makes me money each year.
Hey fam really quick I’ve been following ur work these past few mo n I’m a d class crossfit athlete atm but I’m looking to invest my last into a camera like u guys did n well i was just hoping for sun guidance. Possibly camera requirements?
I Personally wouldn't be of having to pre-sign up for a class. That wouldn't go well for someone that has a schedule that can shift base on the day. I like constancy. However I am a fan of the open portion of the gyms. One of my previous gyms didn't have an open gym time because they didn't have membership to support a full time staff member.
I think the affiliation doesn't offer that much in terms of return of the investment, in other countries that are not the US, the gym most likely its not going to have rogue barbells or equipment, nobull doesnt even ship to some countries (so is rogue btw), sugarwod probably is not the app that they use to keep track of their community, so the affiliation its not worth the price, specially if you´re a small/medium bussines. Great video showcasing not just the athletes, but the sport that we all love and his future and sustainability over time.
Really enjoyed our day together! Awesome work on the video, turned out great. To answer your title question, Yes I do.
Thanks for letting us into your world for a day! Enjoyed your light and energy.

Solid thesis tho! thanks for your ideas
OMG the youngin doing deadlifts, that’s a future worth fighting for.
Jason is a beast man! Congrats on your success Champ
Thank you!
Great show ❤ Jason was superb the way he spoke on the subject 🤝🏼
I always enjoy watching you guys whatever you are up to :)
Meeeen 😂😂😂 this one was a lot of fun, that jujitsu class with Jason
I own CrossFit Westwood and every year when the affiliation fee is due it is quite frustrating to pay. I always debate if it is worth it. With that being said, each year we make more than $3,000 in drop ins alone so I would say the cost is worth it. Plus I love CrossFit and it has changed my life so I guess I am okay with paying them $3,000 per year on top of this $3,000 actually makes me money each year.
That’s what it should be doing. Hopefully HQ can provide more for the affiliates.
Love the thoughts on kids! Lots of good stuff here I'm hoping my box will incorporate. And no, I have zero interest in rolling with Jason Khalipa! LOL
Love to work on the top too 😂
Hey fam really quick I’ve been following ur work these past few mo n I’m a d class crossfit athlete atm but I’m looking to invest my last into a camera like u guys did n well i was just hoping for sun guidance. Possibly camera requirements?
what a legend! hope the sport lives on because it is fkn good and fun!
Any news when podium is going to be available for international shipping
I have found that, especially in Asia, paying thr hefty affiliate fee does not bring any benefits to the business at all
I think the affiliation doesn't offer that much in terms of return of the investment, in other countries that are not the US, the gym most likely its not going to have rogue barbells or equipment, nobull doesnt even ship to some countries (so is rogue btw), sugarwod probably is not the app that they use to keep track of their community, so the affiliation its not worth the price, specially if you´re a small/medium bussines.
Great video showcasing not just the athletes, but the sport that we all love and his future and sustainability over time.
