I experienced a detachment after it took 4 months for my eye doctors office to get me an appointment with a retinal specialist after they found holes in my retina. I'm only 23 and I dont think anyone considered me to be an urgent case. Thank you for bringing awareness to the urgency of fixing even small holes.

I have floaters and just had a optomap scan done and my optometrist reviewed it and said everything looked fine. Is there additional tests I should do?

Does a "macular pucker" count as a retinal complication? Had cataract removed, a few years later had floaters, then few more years macular pucker. Had vitrectomy but even after recovery vision is still "warped", wavy, kind of blurry. Am an elder. Old age not much fun.

I had a floater to show up while i was driving on the interstate the other day! Was the 1st time ever, usually only happens when im squinting or just about to go to sleep.. was so odd!!

How about we finally develop a non-invasive treatment for treating the eye floaters themselves? Beyond the risks outlined here, the floaters themselves are hugely damaging to quality of life for many people. Laser vitreolysis is not great in its current form and is useless for young people suffering from eye floaters. We need a push from eye professionals to get new treatments developed. This problem has been ignored long enough.

It can happen. Especially if you are nearsighted with a longer than average eye length.

Can an optometrist diagnosis or an ophthalmologist?

It requires a proper dilated eye exam, with a 360° retinal examination. All Ophthalmologists are trained to do this, and I assume optometrists are also. However it will require an Ophthalmologist to treat it. A general Ophthalmologist can treat a retinal tear with a laser, if they choose to do so. A retinal specialist also does laser treatments as well as surgical repairs of a detachment.

I recently saw my optomotrist who diagnosed a vitreous detachment and he stood in ftont of me with a special lense attached to glasses and had me look in different directions as he was able to see the floaters and determine it was not a tear thankfully. I was dialated of course. But based on your video are you suggesting i should go back in 6 mths to be sure things havent changed? Also i am finding these floaters so distracting and making it hard to see which in addition to my cateracts isnt helping. Is there anything i can do? Lastly i have has a strange twitching vibration feeling in my eye since this began. What is the cause of that. Thank you so much for the info.​@mguerramd

@@babybear4524 you should get a repeat dilated exam in one month. although on first examination, you may not have a tear or a detachment, it can occur later. Most of the time it will occur within one month. Generally, if you get a tear or a detachment, you will notice symptoms, but not always that’s why we recommend a follow up examination. Floaters can be extremely annoying however they are not dangerous. If you absolutely cannot stand them you should sit on it for about six months and then if you just really can’t take it, a surgery can be done to remove them. We surgically remove the vitreous from your eye and replace it with saline solution. This is called an FOV or floater only vitrectomy.
