The best way I’ve ever had someone explain addiction is this: imagine you are walking around normal your whole life. Then someone says, hey, you’ve been carrying around 100lbs on your back this whole time and you didn’t even know it. The drug is like sitting down all this weight you didn’t know you had. Every time it wears off, you are back to carrying the weight. And now you know the weight is there and you know what it feels like to put it down. Now what was normal is feeling heavy. You just want to put the weight down, so you keep doing the drugs. Problem is, every time you take the drugs, you get a little bit weaker. Now you are too weak to carry the weight of normal. You need to drugs or you feel like you’re being crushed. And you know there is this thing that can take the weight off any time if you just give yourself to it. That’s addiction.

I think it also has to do with one's circumstances. Some people try drugs and don't get hooked. Others do but they're probably carrying a heavier weight at that point, meaning their circumstances aren't really "normal" at large. There's a susceptibility factor that also has to do with genetics.

Believe it or not, it's entirely possible to be completely against narcotics while also suffering from a punishing painkiller addiction. In fact, if I recall, addiction to prescription painkillers is the most common addiction (other than alcohol, I guess?) in the country. And it doesn't help that its spurred on by nefarious doctors and a nefarious and vile industry that literally thrived off of addicting people to oxy and misreporting everything about it for decades. People don't randomly just start an addiction to oxy or vicodin. They are generally prescribed them for serious pain and then -- especially if needing them for too long -- become physically dependent on them. People generally consider those addicted in cases like this to be victims, unless it's someone they don't like, in which case of course they don't extend that benefit to them.
And again, mule-ing tons of kilos of coke and heroine across the border is hardly the same thing as an addiction to a legal prescribed drug that them becomes an addiction. It's not exactly hypocritical.

my uncle died from alcohol withdraw, he had been drinking for over 20 years. Literally anything he could get his hands on. When he tried to stop drinking, his liver finally gave out and he died all in the span of a week, but we had no idea it was effecting him as bad as it was. He was super coherent still, but was having trouble walking or getting out of bed. We just thought it was the withdraws, and he didn't want to go to the hospital because he said he's been through the withdraws before and that it wasn't a big deal. He died a few days later, right in front of my brother, who found him sitting on the couch in the computer room convulsing and mumbling to my brother to call the cops. I still feel bad he found him like that, I can't imagine what was going through that kids head. I really recommend anyone to look up the effects of alcohol and what it does to you long term. I still drink occasionally, but if you think you have to drink to have fun then you should just try that activity without alcohol to see if you even enjoy it. Things can be fun without substances, you don't have to drink at a club to get laid and have fun. That being said, enjoy a drink every once in a while. Just don't become my uncle man, it's a sad thing to see.

So... I'm a therapist, former addiction counselor, professional degree, and also a former active alcoholic. For some number of reasons people believe addiction is a choice or controllable and so is relapse, many people think mental disorders are as well. There are a lot of reasons people think this way, I'm not going to speak to that though. I just want to say that I think Destiny did a good job of explaining this concept in a general way. I've had a lot of classes and read a ton of studies about how this stuff actually is happening in brain physically, and how certain brain areas are impaired, not functioning at the time, damaged etc resulting in this, and then there is also the formation of memories and behaviors and routines, all of which are dependent on your DNA and epigenetics, your life experiences, your age and on and on. We looked at addiction through a bio psycho social theory of addiction, and in clinical my experience, many times this does run in families and twin studies have demonstrated this to an extent as well, meaning it's beyond a learned behavior in many cases. I had great parents, personally, I just reacted differently to alcohol than my friends. It's not an excuse. I know for a fact that if I take a man addicted to heroin and sit him down in front of a full syringe and he's been craving odds are very good he will use it, even if it comes at a heavy cost. You know, the parts of our brains that help us weigh risk vs reward, manage impulsivity, and make decisions that will matter across time are areas shown in studies, using fMRIs, to stop working or to become impaired when that drug or a trigger is present. It would be like taking a literally starving person and walking them into In N Out burger, buying them a double double and fries with an ice cold coke and saying don't eat that, and being pissed off when they do. Recovery is a lifestyle that takes times to establish, takes constant effort to maintain, and sadly not everyone makes it, many do not. The choice to use is different for a person with a genetic history of addiction versus someone without that because their brain works like the 10% of people who struggle with addiction rather than the 90% who generally don't.

@@mjenkinsify Reckieta learned about Vic Mignogna being accused of SA by another voice actor named Monica Rial so Reckieta started going in on her which eventually resulted in Ron Toye, Monica’s fiancé requesting to talk to Reckieta. Reckieta used the ‘interview’ to troll and insult Ron with information he was able to dig up through public court records about Ron and his son. For a few years, Nick would bring up Monica and Ron by his nicknames for them and while he didn’t represent vic mignogna in his defamation case against Rial, Toye, and Funimation, Reckieta did refer Vic to an attorney who was was friends with his father and that attorney would come on air and talk about the case every week for a while. There’s not much else to know except Rial couldn’t press criminal charges against Vic because her statute of limitations had run out and Vic lost his defamation case against Rial because Rials attorneys were able to destroy his credibility by showing evidence that Vic was the kind of guy that could be pretty pushy with some of his fans at conventions and that he hired a Pros in Georgia and brought her back to his hotel room to which he admitted that he did hire her and that he wasn’t perfect. When Vic lost, Nick lost out on the revenue he was getting and he started leaning hard into alt-right political streaming.
