@TheScrumpty I read somewhere of a pilot who took his Tomcat to the boneyard, and began crying when he shut off the engines for the last time. He equated the experience to having the family dog put to sleep. I think he was one of the people who wrote on the nose, "Thanks for the Memories! You are always one sexy beast." or something to that effect. I wish they'd at LEAST fly them at air shows.
@Dogapsa You're correct. There are many Tomcats in the proverbial boneyard in Tuscon, all waiting to be fueled up, re-armed, and re-sexified (lol). Many of them had their former pilots write nostalgic (and sometimes funny) goodbye notes on the noses of the birds. One of my favorites is "Tomcat by choice. Hornet by mandate." Tomcat is one sexy beast.
Don't know about you guys, but having seen the F-14 perform twice at airshows, when you love an aircraft so much, you really don't want some over egoed announcer spouting on about each and every manouver. I'd rather just sit back and just listen to every beat that those GE F110 engines scream their lungs out. Am I right people?
i've been obssesed with this plane for 7 years (half of my life) and i almost coompletely lost it last year when i heard about it being let go. awesome video, awesome aircraft, awesome pilots, best plane ever created.
@cott10r That is certainly true, though it would have been less so had Cheney not cancelled the upgrade programs for the "D" model. Note that the contemproary F-15 still flies...and very well...for the AirForce because it has been consistently upgraded. (My nephew commands an F-15C group in Korea and has tangled with F-22a in that aircraft).
@xTomcatsForeverVF84x I know what you mean. The Tomcat was fast, could take a hit pretty well, and even if it was hit by a missile and taken out, it would stay together well enough in critical places to allow the pilot to be able to eject "AFTER" being hit.
@AngusGibsonT it was amazing, it still wore you out but usually you did not get the run down feeling till you were back on the ground and your adreneline disipated, but flying any high performance fighter jet does that to any pilot, but it was still a lot of great fun flying tomcat, and the D tomcat was the best of them
The Navy will never have a beautiful aircraft like that bird any more. It was the best variable geometery aircraft. and the most recongnizable. It look strong, sleek, and fast. In my youth the F-14 represented the perfect balance of Speed and manuverability Only because through my eyes has a child that jet looks so heroic.Even now it still does to me.
I was probably standing next to the guy who was filming this. God I miss the turkey...Oh, by the way that's VF-32's a/c, not VF-101. I could watch that high speed pass over and over and over...
@AngusGibsonT yes i started flying tomcat before there was an Aplus or B model, and there were so few of the Aplus/b models made, but i was fortunate to have gotten to fly with one of those squadrons that had them for a tour of duty, and then the D models came available and it was like stepping out of the 1970's into the 21st century, and the performance gains with the better electronics, and being almost as user friendly as hornet, really set it above the rest, how was it to fly the d model?
Totally agree. Sec of D at the time was Dick Cheney who wanted to tube Grumman because he said the Tomcat was "jobs program." Said Grumman inflated their cost. 80,000 lost jobs!! We all know the Tomcat is a better plane than the Super Hornet which Navy and Government allocated $81billion to develop. R&D on F-14 was done so it would not have cost that much to manufacture. And forget the excuse of high maintenance because new models would eliminate this contention.
what a beauty, why wont they put this on air national guard instead of retiring it, F 14's has some of the most advanced avionics and weapon system like long range phoenix and still can match up w/ today's par of modern aircraft.
@TheScrumpty Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me like the brass don't take the pilots into consideration. Stop me if I'm wrong, but after 17 years of the Tomcat (and more so if you flew the exact same plane in all 17 years), you probably had a personal and perhaps even an emotional/psychological connection with it. Then someone takes it away from you, and you are forced to say goodbye to a part of yourself. Maybe Im romanticizing but thats definitely how I felt, and I'm not even a pilot.
If the Tomcats used the Phoenix in a long range fight, then yes the Tomcat would definitely win. In a close range dogfight, take off the Phoenix missiles in just leave the sidewinders and sparrows on for increased manuverability, it can still come out on top! Su-30's are very potent planes too, but if you noticed, they like to carry a bunch of missiles underneath the wings and even under the fuesalage, along with fuel tanks. all that really hampers manuverability!
@yipper47 You are completely right, now all we hear nowadays is "to much money is spent on the military." Even though those people don't know what they are talking about, still money could've been saved by simply re-modernizing and basically new everything the Tomcats. No, money was wasted on a machine that MANY argue is newer and advanced, but still can't do the Tomcats job. Screw the bug....
thats prolly a problem with your internet browser. I had that problem. Also do a virus scan you could have a worm that might fuck up some files that will not allow you to video it i had that problem also.
@TheScrumpty I thoroughly enjoy meeting Tomcat pilots! Never met an asshole in the bunch (though I'm sure there's one out there somewhere - there's some in every group. hahaha)! I bet it was tantamount to turning in your beautiful Colt Peacemaker for a water gun! (maybe that's extreme, but you get the idea)
@CRsBeem i honestly think the government should of upgraded the tomcats & fly them until men/women were taken out of the equation. i think it would of been cheaper than building f-22's and the joint strike fighters. oh well right, nothing we can do about it except watch awsome youtube vids of the old tomcat days.
@pjbagnano Yes but not anymore :S I didn't have a chance to see the F-14 Tomcat. Because it's retired and i live in EU so i can't go to airshow in america :S
@yipper47 Well said. The usual half truth that is laid against the tomcat was "that it was old & expensive to maintain." Wait until the super lemon gets to be the average age of an F-14A. As for the F-35, it will be a nightmare to maintain past 15 years. Watch, you will see. Nothing is indestructible. In a time when America is bankrupt and leaderless, the last thing you do is buy two types of airframes (F-18E/F & F-35) that perform the exact same mission!
@kwdplaya They should have NEVER retired the Tomcat. bottom line. It could have been modified to have a more modern radar because the F/A-18, as much as I love it, CANNOT fill the F-14's role.
Imagine a US navy F/A-18 pilot flying over IRAN and gettin into a dogfight with an arabian F-14. He'd probabily be weeping at havin to shoot a Tomcat down of all things.
So is the company that made the original Hornet! It is simply irrelevant. The fabrication jigs are generally retained at AMARC, R&D is a sunk cost, so I question your conclusion about the cost comparison. The F-22 is overqualified; the 18 is underqualified. But it is all moot.
wow no one beats the tomcat in its element ... ...speed the tomcat kicks ass and takes names shame it only went throw 4 upgrades till the navy got cheep and if only it was a air force fighter
great vid never actually seen the whole tomcat rutine but to the guy who wants top gun music, please dont say that because whenever u search a tomcat video that stupid song is played so i think its time we move on from that song.
Sorry but I came for the sound of the aircraft not the substandard music playing. I actually like stuff WAY HEAVIER THAN THIS MUSIC, but it's the aircraft's day to shine. You spoiled it....😢
Don't know about you guys, but having seen the F-14 perform twice at airshows, when you love an aircraft so much, you really don't want some over egoed announcer spouting on about each and every manouver. Damn!! Thats mi favourite plane. The most beautiful plane in the world, no doubt. Why Its Gone!!. We mis you Tomcat =(
Such a legendary fighter. The greatest fighter ever made. Those vertical climbs with those barrell rolls were sick!
@TheScrumpty I read somewhere of a pilot who took his Tomcat to the boneyard, and began crying when he shut off the engines for the last time. Fourth song is "Everlong" by the Foo Fighters
Great display ever cool pilot skills very fantastic great music too including a great takeoff and touch and go and landing loud display 👏👍🤗
Rocco said that VF-32 was having a reunion and hoped that seeing the demo made them feel young again.
@cott10r That is certainly true, though it would have been less so had Cheney not cancelled the upgrade programs for the "D" model. I could watch this video again and again.
And at 11:40, that was really beautiful!
@TheScrumpty Ah so you went through the whole history of Tomcat! From Tomcat to Bombcat to Super Tomcat! What was it like flying the D model???
A magnificent aircraft that should have been put in renewed and extended production rather than retired.
Am I the only one to imagine a modern version of the f-14 with sharp angles like the f-22,f-35.
They are augmented turbines, so they have afterburners.
im gonna miss the tomcat
beyond bad ass WAAAY BEYOND!
1:42 That looks like a shot RIGHT out of Top Gun!
MiG 29...Man the SU27 Flanker cant even fuck with it
the take of normaly take like 1000ft sometimes less than that. it depend off the payload, fuel and the temperature.
great video!
@gkimmd1 I also wish for the Tomcats to be put back into service. A "BUG" just doesn't cut it
oopps didn't mean to post twice :)
@YZach The old models handled pretty poorly. I believe they fixed the problem with the F-14D, which barely got any air time.
@JBLaOHeI Retired 2006. Iran Air Force still uses them.
Damn I miss that Cat
VF-32
Plane capt.
80-84
@tomcatter11 I don't mind the announcers, usually they are pilots them selves, sometimes pilots of the very same aircraft.
my favorite plane!
Fantastic video!
I love this plane: anytime baby!
ANYTIME BABY!!!
Totally agree. Sec of D at the time was Dick Cheney who wanted to tube Grumman because he said the Tomcat was "jobs program." Said Grumman inflated their cost. 80,000 lost jobs!! A wise man once said.. The Tomcat doesn't get chosen, It chooses YOU!
great video! how did you put a 17 minute video on? please tell me!
you can't beat up the place like this with a bug. RIP baby!
I love F-14 Tomcat!
what a beauty, why wont they put this on air national guard instead of retiring it, F 14's has some of the most advanced avionics and weapon system like long range phoenix and still can match up w/ today's par of modern aircraft.
@3ISAMAGICNUMBR I have no idea who or what you are responding to? BTW, "its' should be "it's" as in "it is." That's called a contraction.
Well, Kenny Loggings said: '"listen to her howlin roar"
@CRsBeem to costly in maintenance compaired to the f-18

Ps. Northrup-Grumman does still exist.
@yipper47 Amen, brother.
Best Demo i ever saw bye bye Tom Cat! Any-Time, Any-where Baby!...
P.s thats Vf-32 jet!...
@yipper47 You are completely right, now all we hear nowadays is "to much money is spent on the military." Fu%^ing great video!!!!!!!!
I'm really not sure everybody, but is this the F-14D ?
who sings the song of the all video?
thats prolly a problem with your internet browser. I had that problem. Also do a virus scan you could have a worm that might fuck up some files that will not allow you to video it i had that problem also.

I don't think that the F-18 have ability to replace the F-14. And it is easier to add a newer version engine to the F-14 than develop a newer plane.
@CRsBeem i honestly think the government should of upgraded the tomcats & fly them until men/women were taken out of the equation. i think it would of been cheaper than building f-22's and the joint strike fighters. oh well right, nothing we can do about it except watch awsome youtube vids of the old tomcat days.

i heard this plane is outta service? is that true?
tomcat got soul
Is this the F-14D ?
Gunna miss that "ol' cat"
THATS WHAT HE SAID..
As an interceptor...definitely. AIM-54, now lost without a launcher! Beyond that, we'll just agree to disagree.
Mig 29 will never get close enough to it to "dogfight"
@yipper47

and this is why america kicks ASS!
no way....
Come on, man. Let's get real. I know the company...very well.
wow no one beats the tomcat in its element ... ...speed the tomcat kicks ass and takes names shame it only went throw 4 upgrades till the navy got cheep and if only it was a air force fighter
great vid never actually seen the whole tomcat rutine but to the guy who wants top gun music, please dont say that because whenever u search a tomcat video that stupid song is played so i think its time we move on from that song.
I think you may miss my point. I would have traded Rhino dollars for an upgraded F-14D+ and save we taxpayers money.
@t5239857289578947594 Look towards the bottom of the first post man. There's your plane. Although I prefer the ST-21.
its not normal that he is olmost out of duty
300 gallons per minute! shit!
bring back the rabid kitty!!!
Hit the burners dude HAHAHA.Tthere called turbines brah.
Agreed! hahaha
@Toronto65
F-18 SH is a POS..
Tomcat should still be in service...
Damn the politicians..!
"free" world? -.- ....
Sorry but I came for the sound of the aircraft not the substandard music playing. I actually like stuff WAY HEAVIER THAN THIS MUSIC, but it's the aircraft's day to shine. You spoiled it....😢
I wish airshows didn't play music over the public address system, or if they did, the volume was very low.
@badmanblottclott
if you love russian aircraft so much, why don't you move over there? GTFO!
