Is Apple Watch Ultra Too Big to Daily?

- I'm almost sold on the idea of the Apple Watch Ultra but I am slightly on the fence about its size. Will it just feel too big to wear day to day?
In this video I compare the Apple Watch Ultra with my Apple Watch Series 5 to see just how much bigger it feels and looks.
Many thanks to the Apple Store in Bath for being very accommodating with their filming policy. (I was allowed to film the device but not customers, staff or audio, which I felt was more than reasonable so I'm very grateful for that).

That’s what he said
Here is a thought to blow your little mind. People comment at all points of duration while watching a video. Maybe I wrote that BEFORE he said that? As you go throughout your day today thinking you are smart and everyone else is stupid, remember this conversation. Then, as confirmation add to that knowledge that you are watching videos thinking they are new info about an Apple Watch Ultra, WELL after the Ultra 2 is out and during the time the Ultra 3 is discussed. @@kosteaproduction
The Apple Watch Ultra is definitely a cool watch. I do recommend to some people. Its built like a tank and works extremely well. However, I highly suggest you try it on first and wear it for a couple of days to see if you like it or not. Personally, I had to return mine. I notice the biggest problem for me was its size. It was so massive on my wrist (I have 16cm wrists). It looked awesome but it became more of a distraction (even with the screen turned off). I couldn't help but constantly stare at it even time I twisted my wrist. Luckily I had a 7 day money back guarantee. So I got my money back. I hope this helps.
You only got a 7 day money back guarantee! HAHAHA! Peasant! PEASANT!! I got a 10 day money back guarantee! HAHA! Suck it! SUCK IT!
Try a long sleeve button shirt. The Ultra can easily hide under the sleeves of a pullover but may not be for a long sleeve collared shirt.
That’s a good point. I’ll do that when mine arrives hehe (I ordered one).
Yeah, I think it looks fine. Clearly not as elegant as the smaller one, but that wasn't the point. It definitely still works as a day to day watch. Bulkier, sure, but not overtly so. I think the shot that's a little further away captures it quite good. At an arms length away it doesn't immediately catch the eye as a super big watch.
I must say that I'm pleasantly surprised. There was a lot of talk about its perceived size because it doesn't taper at the edges, but it's manageable.
This video is very helpful for me. I am still using the original Apple Watch. But I damaged the glass and I have to look for a replacement. The very elegant stainless S8 with Milanese loop costs the same as the Ultra. I prefer the Ultra because of the sturdy design but fear that it might look too big. Unfortunately the local shops don’t have Ultras to test the size. So my decision relies on videos like this.
Its not too big. I have now used one week a apple watch ultra and it is smaller than my garmin descent mk 2, which is too every day use of me.
I'm a male and after owning the 42mm Series 2, 44m Series 4, I got the 41mm S7 because after losing weight the large Apple Watch got too large for my wrist. The Ultra is an absolute no-go for me. It's massive.
This watch wears fine in all occasions. The band is what needs to be swapped for the occasion
Yeah I think you’re on to something with this. I hadn’t thought about it like that because they’re so expensive!
The Ultra is the perfect adventure tool. Has to be large.
it is quite thick too! I love my series 7 (for now!). I have fitted a yellow ocean band to it. :)
Thankyou for providing your wrist size.
If one can wear a James Bond Omega Seamaster or a Rolex Submariner or a Breitling Colt or a Panerai Luminor for a formal occasion with a suit and under a long sleeved dress shirt, there is absolutely no reason why one cannot wear the Apple Watch Ultra too, in a similar situation on a similar occasion. One just has to choose the strap that one goes with, so that the more neutral appearance is maintained.
Rolex Sub is 40mm. On a 6 inch wrist it looks huge.
I’m also want to buy this watch 🥺
As long as you're not wearing it in formal settings, I think it looks just fine for day to day use. In all the wrist shots I've seen, it never looks as large as it's 49mm size would suggest.
Why not just get a normal Apple Watch then? You can use it in all settings.
@@DigitalNomadOnFIRE because normal apple watch is smaller battery, so it must to charge 1-3 times in a day. Apple watch ultra have bigger battery and tracking sport it must to charge once per 2 days or with normal use once a 3 days.
@@DigitalNomadOnFIRE Dudes should have a mechanical watch for formal settings….like a grown up.
@@DigitalNomadOnFIRE Depends on the user. I'm of the mindset that you should have dedicated tools. Use a rugged smartwatch for day to day use and a formal analog watch for more dressy affairs.
@@DigitalNomadOnFIRE because i wear a mechanical watch when going out. The smart watch is for work and working out for me.
Truthfully, I went from luxury watches to wearing a Mudmaster even on business occasions. I don’t think that anyone but the snootiest would care if you wore this watch at a black tie event, though i wouldn’t wear the MM to one.
I would wear mine anywhere, but I brought to protective cases one clear one black. The black case makes it look much smarter.
Make a black one and you have my 800 bucks. I can’t do anything with it how it looks today
Yet another fantastic video, Ben! I really appreciate your unique perspective on tech, equipment and general life optimisation! Really resonates with my own! Keep up the great work 🙂
Why can’t they make one with smaller size. 42mm
And bigger battery with solar charge
Mentioning your wrist size would be great. A 49mm on a 6 inch wrist even versus a 7 is huge. Regardless by Watch standards it’s a giant
I think the watch itself looks fine even on small wrists.
I was confused between this and the stainless steel model and ended up getting the stainless steel silver model because in my opinion it looks really classy and premium to wear it with any outfits where as the ultra literally feels sporty and chunky and if you wear it with a formals then it will look so mismatched plus weird🙃
Yeah I think they need to make a version without the orange button! That would go a long way.
I have a Series 6 Apple Watch Edition (Titanium Predecessor to the Ultra) I have experienced no body Durability issues with the body and glass, and its looks very stylish and inconspicuous (Appears to be Indistinguishable from the aluminum version) on my wrist! I was very upset when the discontinued the edition line in favor of a bulkier and more flashy shadow of its former self!
TLDR: R.I.P Apple Watch Edition 2015-2021
I also have a 17,5cm wrist and i am still not sure if it is a bit too big 😅
Also for the regular series 9 i am not 100% sure if i should get the 41 or 45mm model. I like the bigger screen for navigation and stuff, but will it look a bit clunk on my wrist?
Some guids say for a 17cm wrist you should get a watch betweet 39-42mm 😅
I have small wrists too, and I have to say it looks quite ridiculous. The difference with your current iwatch is staggering.
I work in a corporate environment and have a formal event coming up. Will be wearing my Ultra, I’ve worn it daily since it’s arrived and it’s hands down the best imo because battery life is no longer a concern.
Yeah the more I live with mine the more I wouldn’t even be concerned in a formal environment by it either. It’s a great looking watch.
You need a big wrist otherwise it looks ridiculous. I’m on the final slot of an ocean band and it looks just fine. I’ve had to buy the extension for over a wetsuit though.
Im in love wt mine
My local store!
C H O N K E R. I like the look of it but it’s way to chunky.
Ha! I found your channel and subbed up a few days ago, before on an earlier video and I was thinking - I wonder if this chap’s local - and then I see you’re in Bath filming B roll in my stomping ground.
Ha a small world - it’s funny how many people have mentioned they’re local too actually.
@@BenVallack interesting- wonder if the algorithm of suggested videos to watch likes to push channels that are deemed likely to “locally” resonate… It’s definitely working - as I’d never really considered myself into “EDC” mindset/lifeset, but then realised I must be given how I pack and the fact the Watch Ultra appeals exactly for the reasons you’ve set out in your other video. Also nice to watch someone who can speak without and umm or err, but yet doesn’t sound / isn’t scripted 🙏 Keep up the good work, Ben!
@@itisifelix yeah I wonder that too. Yeah I think a lot of people are into EDC without realising there’s a name for it! (That’s just given me a video idea in fact!) Appreciate your comments. I’ve spent a lot of time experimenting with my RUclips process to get a reasonable quality presentation that sounds candid without sounding waffly. It’s really hard. I’ve experimented with autocues, with and without scripts etc. I am getting there I think but by no means where I really want to be yet. Certainly some videos on the channel are much worse than others!
Nice video
Which strap did u order. I tried it on in bath as well with the orange. Love the colour just not sure I was a fan of trying to clip it through the loops as found it a bit fiddly. The orange in the ribbed silicone would be the perfect partner for me I think.
Yeah I went with the green loop as shown at the end of the video. I think it’s the nicest colour but the always ‘slightly too loose or too tight’ issue is annoying. Shame the velcro ones aren’t in as nice colours.
It’s NOT too big, unless you have a very small wrist.
It feels too big for me. I’m going to take it back
i,d like to see an apple watch to protect my $800.00 from $cratches.
Did you say how big your wrist was here? I must have missed it
On screen as a title somewhere
i ve got almost the same wrist size. Did u got the M one?
Yep medium alpine loop.

Until Apple adds proper sports and adventure profiles like Garmin, along with proper offline maps - this will just be a normal AW in a different casing. I mean, it doesn't even tell strokes per second while rowing. Apple's leaving too much for third party developers. Even the go-to skiing app is made by a lone developer. If he gets bored with it, this expensive paper weight will be worthless for skiers.
Is this bath?
Yep
@@BenVallack great content, love the channel 👍🏻
This watch is a no-brainer. It has 27% state of charge after 60 hrs of running. 2 nights in sleep mode. 1x swimming in the gym. No oxygen measurements, no always on display. The Ocean band is super comfortable and light weight.
It’s not big enough. It’s not that big anyway. It’s what 4 milliliters bigger than the regular watch!
EDC philosophy? Gulp. Had to look that up. Why is that a thing?
Hehe - it’s a fun one
Might just get away with it if it wasn’t so thick.
whats your wrist size cm?
It's in the video
@@BenVallack soryy my english is bad i dont understand clearly
Debate is so stupid. Most regular watches are bigger than the Apple Ultra. I have two Tags which are larger.
Yeah but when 100 million regular Apple Watch users are used to the smaller size people wonder if it’s too big. I agree in use it’s actually totally fine. Mine’s arrived now and I’m already used to the size.
not worth it
Worth is a tricky and personal topic. There is preference, price and your wallet to consider. If you are the type of person to spend your "extra" cash on tech or jewelry then there is a lot to like. Value proposition is another story and that also depends on what you value. I am with you in that, for me, it is not worth it but I don't diminish the fact that I don't think Apple has made any mistakes here and I am sure it will sell for those invested in that eco-system with an active lifestyle. If it keeps all the smart watch smarts and can compete with Garmin and other rugged brands it is well worth the selling price.
@Wayne Dixon Very nicely articulated!
What's the point of a watch when phones exist
I'm almost completely looking at that the other way around. Really wondering what is the point in a phone when a watch like this exists and you have things like iPads around the house.
@@BenVallack An iPad is too cumbersome to move around, outside the house at least. To replace a phone you need 2 things. And how do you make phone calls comfortably on a watch or a ipad.
@@skyhappy AirPods for calls. iPad just for use around the house. I know there are a few edge cases that make it really hard still but in principle its a very appealing idea.
@@BenVallack Sounds like a hassle really when a phone exists. Also for a iPad typing is harder. I swipe type on my s10e with my one thumb.
Is just for men not for women
Jesus, another "man" complaining about the first man's watch from apple. What the hell is wrong with you ppl, all regular apple watches are for women and gay men. This is the first real man's watch and the size is quite normal compared to any other man's watch...
@Arte Floe really can't get your point with the video toys here but honestly I don't really care. Most reviewers are Americans and their opinions are irrelevant for the rest of the world... And so is yours!
@Arte Floe you mean to mistake girls watches for men's? I can let you do that, yes. Maybe you forget the gay who announced it to the world - Tim? Or your brain can't possibly make the link?
@Arte Floe haha this is a nice one :)
It just doesn't look good on you. Your wrist is too small. The only real problem, like many of you have, is the fact you want it for the sake of hype and then you start convincing yourself it looks good on you. No, I does not. Go to gym or buy appropriately sized watch for your wrist. Immature kids.
No amount of working out is going to make my wrists bigger!
Are you Russian?
Apple Watch is too big to daily and too big to look good and too big to care about. The watch looks silly and ridiculous. Non watch people wear these and don’t get how ridiculous they look. Clownish.
Do you think they care about someone else’s opinion? Needless to say you might look ridiculous to others for one reason or another.
My wrist is the same size as yours and I own the Ultra and it’s silly big. I use mine for running daily and for noodling around without my iPhone since I have cellular activated on Verizon, but the majority of time and for sleep I wear my AW6 and much prefer it size-wise.
What size is your wrist?
What size is his wrist?
@@JB-hq9yj 17.5cm or 6.8 inches
I really like these. Tried one on and fell in love with it. Bulkier than the standard AW yes, but you rightly say that the curved edges of the standard AW hides its true dimensions. For the slight extra size of this one I think its relative hardiness and extra battery life are nice touches.
wish it were bigger tbh💁🏻♂
yes it is.
