I watched this live in 1988...it was a wonderful match. But Agassi was absolutely powerless in the fifth, and anyway,Wilander was the King because he won 3 of 4 Grand Slams this year.Wonderful to see these things again...thx a lot !
People forget that in his younger days, Agassi ventured to the net quite often, especially compared to players these days. And while not a great volleyer, he was good at closing out points up there (he's the only player who I've NEVER heard of missing an overhead). He did this because he wasn't as fit, and wanted to end points quickly. It's only when he was older that he preferred the strategy of staying back and breaking the other guy down.
Agassi came to the net quite a bit, which I forgot considering he was just a baseliner! Classic mullet also. Wilander had the best suntan in the business and also how long does he take between points?
Wilander was like a wall. He would literally push back every ball without using much power himself. Made a player like Agassi do all the work. Still, no clue why Agassi just threw away the fifth set like that at a Grand Slam semi.
Wilander was the Djokovic of his time. Very similar playing style I think. But it's surprising how early he wore out. I think as of 1989 he was already done. And he was arguably the best in the world in 1988.
To bad Mats never played this tennis after 1988 season, having already won 7 slams, could have won 3-4 more, was just 24,anyway great player top-20 all time.
@jproxursoxoff He won more than half of his net points, so the strategy was working. But I don't know of any other match in his career in which he approached so much.
The point starting at 3:00 is amazing from young Andre. I wish more matches of him from his first years on tour were around to see. He's also using that Prince Oversize Graphite which was the number one, most popular racquet with the youngsters back in those days. I wish he would've stuck with that thing his whole career instead of that Donnay he used. I don't feel he was ever truly comfortable until he switched to the PT57 Head mold.
Interesting that '88 was similar to how 2015 is shaping up - the female GOAT is on track for a Grand Slam whilst a 2nd tier male GOAT (though Djoker is a step up from even Wilander's brilliance) is on his way to taking out 3 of the 4 failing to win the one crown that alluded him...

Wilander was also a master of the 5th set - his stamina was extraordinary!

good points except everyone's missed an overhead before. everyone.
Iirc he missed an crucial overhead in the fifth set of the 91 FO final.
Fun game to watch, I never tire of Asassi's backhand, not because of the power, he just seems to hold the ball on this racquet for extra time. .
I would like to see the whole match. Is it available?
Agassi had quite a lengthy career... Wilander sizzled out after 1988.
Wilanders style is very successful.. and it's very boring..
Great shot by Mats at 7.30,he was the king that year.

What a match!!!!

Agassi approached the net over 100 times?? Are you kidding me? What was he thinking? Nick was a terrible coach for him.

pure genius, wilander looks dumbfounded
Agassis shorts....
Donnerwetter!
In the 1988 Wilander was the strongest. Only at Wimbledon he failed.
yeah... against mecir... one of the most difficult players to beat by mats

Agassi is so much better.
It he played more patient,he would win.
Wow this was 30 yrs ago !!!
Now this is s match up id never seen before👌
awesome, keep looking for agassi in 86 or 87, hard to find.
What a match, it is a pity that André stopped going to the net like that
Bloody hell I’ve never seen Agassi at the net so much . 18 here and giving a in his prime Willander a great match
Agassi was cramping in the fifth set here, couldnt keep up fitness wise at this point.
