This may sound like a total idiotic thing to say, but I’m just getting into fishing and my girlfriend’s 9 year old is/was the main reason. I searched for this type of info but no one seems to post it. Probably because it’s “common sense” to most. I genuinely appreciate you putting this up for extreme beginners like me. Thank you. You gained a subscriber with alerts instantly after this video.
I like how you speak so fluently in your video. I can’t tell you how many times i get annoyed watching bloggers speak and they don’t really know where they’re going with it and they pause a lot. I’m subscribing!
Wax worms by far are the best Bluegill bait, Crappies also like wax worms, you can catch a good mix of Bluegills and crappie on them. I have even caught Catfish on them when fishing for Bluegills.
A small worm is number one imo, so effective, but an overlooked gem is caterpillars that are free and easy to collect. Those gypsy moth, or "tent" caterpillars, when they get large enough, work VERY well. Just a 'pillar on a number 8 hook, cast out 10 to 15 feet and wait for the line to tweak indicating you've got a bite. If there is overhanging trees, so much the better. The hairs can irritate some people, like me (it makes me feel like I've been handling fiberglass insulation), but the results are worth it.
I had been taking hours to a catch bluegill for cut bait to catch catfish out of my lake using what is essentially crappie bait, which makes for a very long and drawn out process. I watch your video and fifteen minutes later I was in a store buying corn, thirty minutes later I quickly caught a bluegill and within the hour I had a ten pound catfish on the line. Thanks.
For me, a bead head nymph wet fly under a bobber or cast with a light fly rod outfishes any food bait I have ever tried, is super cost-effective, and seems to attract the larger gillies better too. You can even put a bit of food bait on the hook as extra enticement, and still have a good chance of a hookup after the little thieves inevitably steal it. Better yet, go for a popper and a dropper fly to double your chances. Love me some fried gillies!
Crickets are the best bait for bluegill, then millwork, then red worms, then whatever you wanna use. I don't feel you actually fish for bluegill as much as you want us to believe. People are creating content just to create. Sad
i second the EarthWorms they work EXTREMELY well...My personal opinion on setup is put a small bobber about 18 to 20 inches above the hook and put a split shot about 6 inches or so above the hook...it gives your hook up ratio a way better chance also like the tip said in the video always use 4 lb test or below if you use something for example 6 to 8 pound test...your chances of catching panfish is way slimmer because the fish are scared of the thicker line they are more finicky so good luck fishing anglers HAVE FUN and as always Stay Hooked Up
I use wax worms on an ice fishing jig. Works great, and they rarely swallow the hook, but when they do, it's easy to remove with needle nose pliers and doesn't hurt the fish. That's important, because I'm usually catching bluegills to use for flathead bait.
Interesting tips. I use my Zebco Dock demon as is. I think it's 6-8 lbs test with no bobber and I catch the little bluegills, smallies, and even rock bass on bread and worms. One time I was catching tiny bluegills and a 4 lbs bass took the bluegill on my hook, dragged it to the other side of the dock, spit it out, then came back for it on the original side of the dock. Keep in mind, was using the smallest hook I had and somehow, the planets aligned right and the hook was lodged in the bass's mouth and my line didn't snap.
Got a Dock Demon for a couple nearby small ponds. Love it. Had to swap out the line, though. It's loaded with 4lb mono and the fish went after it instead of the bait, so I threw in some Pline floroclear 4lb. Works like a champ on crappie, gills and smallmouth.
I found too that the bright orange or white color fishbite's work great for bluegill and I out fished my friend of him using small redworms! One small cutout I've used caught 9 nice bluegill and still because of the nature of fishbite's construction, had used only one tiny piece for 9 fish caught. The bait stayed very secure, and cut into a single tiny strip 1/4 inches using Owner Mosquito Hooks size 8 & size 6 hooks. Tight lines everyone. 👍
I used hamburger bread and if you roll it into a neat ball it will stay on the hook better, the fish love it. Also I use slim Jim’s and corn but they don’t like the corn as much as they do the slim Jim. Great video tho 👍
Great video… bringing my dad and his friend bluegill fishing this weekend… so thanks again, I’ll be using night crawlers, what’s your thought on red worms? Was thinking to get a thing of them…
Am a tarantula keeper also a pacman frog keeper.. I feed them dubia roaches.. Whenever my dubia roach population explodes, i use em for fishing.. It works like a charm.. I even give most of em to my fellow fisherman friends who really don't mind handling this species of roach as live bait, better than freezing half of my roach colony in a freezer just to throw em away to waist..
I use panfish hooks for the bluegill with bread and i almost always catch a brim if not its a turtle. I used nightcrawlers once on a 3/0 bass hook going for a largie and ended up catching my pb brim @ 2 lbs but good stuff never knew about the corn or wax worms, ill have to try it out.
Spam works great for Cats & Perch ... Not cheap like it was when I was a Kid though ... Must be kept cold in a cooler , cut in very small chunks , covering the barb ...
i know its overkill but i always use half or a third of the Night crawler on a size 6 to size 8 hook it worked for me today and at sunset by the time i was done i caught like 10 panfish within like 20 minutes lol
Corn is a strange bait. Some people catch many fish with it......Where other people like myself.....have NEVER caught a single fish with corn. I’ll continue trying every year, though. Maybe I’ll get lucky.....
jason pennington I know I’m late but personally that’s the best thing for me I catch tilapia, bluegill, baby speckled catfish and shiners in a pond behind my house
Bro corn is the best, I caught a bunch of bluegill with it, catfish, and carp (also I put small meal worms with the corn too at times but just corn works perfect too)
You said fish the bait under a bobber. I agree it's probably works the best. I drop shot mine with very good results. Just saying, something to think about.
+Junior Perez 10 lb line will still work, but you'll lose out on a fair amount of bites. Just a little harder to catch them because they may see your line
I thought corn was illegal in most places. Use to be when I was a kid because they can't digest it or something like that. Maybe that has changed tho...
I'd go with 4-6 pound test line. 8-15 would be too much really. Especially if you're using a lure cause the line won't cast very far. If you're using a lure for bluegill, don't forget that bluegill likes to stay near docks, but if you're in a boat, look for trees in the water cause that's their hotspot.
I agree you do not need to use line over 4lb test but right now Im using 12lb because it's the only line I have that isn't crappy line to use so I use 12lb line. As I'm typing this, I just came inside from fishing at my pond and coughs 16 blue gill In about an hour total
For crappie a live minnows preferably emerald shiner…..perch emerald shiner….bluegill piece of night crawlers. …walleye night crawlers…catfish night crawlers or creek chubs …bass creek chubs….pike creek chubs….
Small bits of frozen, raw shrimp. You get a whole lot from one average sized shrimp. Cheap, clean, easy to store, and they gobble em right down. Perch especially.
4lb test 1-2 small split shot #8 Aberdeen hooks Small thill bobber. Run worm completely over the hook from mouth to tail and if you don't catch a bluegill your not fishin in water.
Bottom line is that when they are biting, they will bite on anything. When they aren't biting, they won't bite on anything. I just use tube jigs and save the expense of buying live bait that may just get wasted anyway. You can also use corn along with a tube jig. Just open a can and take a few dozen kernels with you, and leave the rest in the refrigerator to have something to eat later if you don't catch anything. Better than wasting food.
Great video. However, pet stores charge WAY too much for crickets( and everything else). Go to a bait store. You will get them for around a nickel each.
i really gotta say worms and corn are the best. living in sw texas, bread doesnt work as much as worms. our bluegills have learned and perfected the art of stripping the hooks clean. for those unlucky bluegills that get hooked, they into our bait bucket lol
Frozen popcorn shrimp (They used to be cheap back in the day) Haven't checked in a while Also Spam (don't laugh) has to be kept cold in a cooler , cut in very small chunks just covering the barb - Good for catfish as well Lake Amistad ? Used to Catfish with a guide there in 70's /80's He made his own stink bait & chummed with Soured Grain - we always caught our limit
If anyone reads this just to let you know chicken makes really really good bait. One time I woke up early in the Morning to do some cat fishing in that pond but I was getting nothing but bluegill bites. Unfortunately I put on to big of a hook.

The last big catfish my brother caught before he died was with corn. Glad to see you mention it!
Sorry for your loss!
RIP a gud nigga
I have caught bluegill on tiny pieces of hot dogs blue gill seems to love them and also caught catfish bass and drum on as well.
My grandpa had that picture in the background! It brought back so many good memories. Thanks for the info too!
Absolutely love your videos.... Straight to the point and extremely informative.... You're the man

awesome video, its nice to still see people catching these tasty fish, most people here in Colorado don't understand how to catch panfish.
Can you post the link for those hooks you got of amazon?

I'm in Pennsylvania for panfishing worms and hot dogs works for me my kids love it
Corn*
Best bluegill bait... period... live crickets
Crickets are the best bait for bluegill, then millwork, then red worms, then whatever you wanna use. I don't feel you actually fish for bluegill as much as you want us to believe. People are creating content just to create. Sad
Bread
Use 2 lb test, and light bobbers. Teach the child how to cast and how to reel in slowly, and you will be laughing for years.

great tips. i will definely use the night crawler and corn, cheaper and secure on hook. thanks, bob

Jeff Cowan i use wax worms on a little nipper ice jig with a rocket bobber and it works great

Great fish story. love it. And I do believe it. It only happens once in a life time. Good to be you.

Got about 60 bluegill with a bobber and some worms today
I got 50 bluegill with wax worms to day
I think wax worms outperform every other bait for bluegill fishing
Dam.amanda u doing good I try every thang at my lake nothing I go 2 pounds I catch em as big as my hand
I used hamburger bread and if you roll it into a neat ball it will stay on the hook better, the fish love it. Also I use slim Jim’s and corn but they don’t like the corn as much as they do the slim Jim. Great video tho 👍

Pimento cheese and light bread mixed an make dough balls they stay together good trout like it too
Thanks for making this video! I like its short sweet and to the point :)
I subscribed as soon as I heard night crawlers, and midwest! I'm in Iowa
Where I live the only thing that the bluegills eat is worms. I've tried all these and more and worms will always be my favorite.
I use longshank Aberdeen hooks for bream or they swallow it
Am a tarantula keeper also a pacman frog keeper.. I feed them dubia roaches.. Whenever my dubia roach population explodes, i use em for fishing.. It works like a charm.. Excellent presentation - very informative. Thank you.
I nail em using jigs with bobbers, typically red & white in color, or rebel crawfish.
Nice video… where did you buy the red worms
You could also use good size minnows like 1 inch minnow to catch a good size blue gill
Try white string cheeses I've caught many blue gill on it as big as my hand thank u great vid
Slim Jims! I love it. Gotta try that for fun.
great vid. great man fish on..all the beset from CANADA,ONTARIO,ST.CATHARINES
keep it up man your best youtuber
+alfredo serrano-avila Thanks! Best of luck fishing
bashie games that bait is the best
I use panfish hooks for the bluegill with bread and i almost always catch a brim if not its a turtle. I used nightcrawlers once on a 3/0 bass hook going for a largie and ended up catching my pb brim @ 2 lbs but good stuff never knew about the corn or wax worms, ill have to try it out.
my theory is the corn is a BRIGHT color mixed w/ just enough to mimic a meat-y texture so they hit it.
I don’t use live bait so I’m curious about the sweet corn
We can all agree bread and worms are the absolute classics
I use a little bit of a Magic carp bait pellet on the end of a tiny hook and a split shot weight about 8 inches up. Panfish go at it like pirhanas
You fish with pokemon bait
Is 10lb line to high for bluegill/brim
Spam works great for Cats & Perch ... Not cheap like it was when I was a Kid though ... Must be kept cold in a cooler , cut in very small chunks , covering the barb ...
Hotdogs are awesome bait 🎣
I was trying to see if they were good for bluegill
Great video man
I like to use little spoons they work great
How far is the bobber from the bait?
You can use any line just use a very small hook and small bobber. Salmon eggs work awesome
If your fishing in the southwest meal worms are definitely a winner!!
Awesome vid man. Corns hit and miss fer me. But when they bite its a biggn
Thank you for the great video
Love it!...Thanks, From REELS "N HOOKERS in Chris! keep it hot and fishy...hot grease and lots of fried fish!
Wax worms work the best and you'll possibly get alot of perch as well
You are right wax worms are the best.
great videos and very helpful tips
+Nikulenko Anna Thanks! Good luck fishing!
i know its overkill but i always use half or a third of the Night crawler on a size 6 to size 8 hook it worked for me today and at sunset by the time i was done i caught like 10 panfish within like 20 minutes lol
First time I've seen you but I would fish with you.
Thanks 🌽 gonna try corn tomorrow
Me and my pops always use corn :D
With the corn, do u put the weight on it not? And bobber?
+Austin Barker I use a bobber about 3 foot from the bait and a piece of split shot 1 foot from my hook

#6 mustad hooks work well for steelhead& bluegill so why not?
I like. to use hooks with long shanks. It prevents bluegills from swallowing or taking the hook deep. They don't seem to be hook shy.
I don't know why, but bread doesn't work like it used to in the lake i fish at. It might have something to do with the water getting muddier, idk.
Is it ok if its 6lb line
I've heard you could also use sliced cheese. Never tried it myself though.
I live in the mid west I’ve caught large mouth bass on worms
You said fish the bait under a bobber. I agree it's probably works the best. I drop shot mine with very good results. Just saying, something to think about.
what the best food for the carb fishing.. please
عمر التقني that would be bread if you are looking for some carbs
I dont know if this is for other lakes but the best bait for mine is Dough. Just flour and water.
Meal worms. You can raise them easily and cheap. They also work fantastic.
Yess this is wat i needed
Just a random ? I only have 10lb fishing line can I still use it or do I have to use 4lb fishing line thanks
+Junior Perez 10 lb line will still work, but you'll lose out on a fair amount of bites. Just a little harder to catch them because they may see your line
That's fine it doesn't make a big difference
I nail em all day on 8lb, so..
Instead of bread, use a piece of foam that looks like bread. Lasts longer and stays on the hook way easier!
I also live in the Midwest. I've always used worms and wax worms on a little hook or jig.
Found your channel thru fishbrain dropped you a sub 👍 👍
I thought corn was illegal in most places. Use to be when I was a kid because they can't digest it or something like that. Maybe that has changed tho...
Just in some states chumming that is. In SC it is unlawful to fish with corn, cheese, fish eggs or imitations of them on Lake Jocassee.
Good tips. I thought bluegill would have wanted the whole worm and not a piece, but good to know. They kept stealing my bait and my hook was too big.
Had a bluegill snap my line lol I forgot to take the test line off which was only 2 pounds lost my best lure lol had to buy a 15 pound line
I use 8lb line with good results
I'd go with 4-6 pound test line. 8-15 would be too much really. Especially if you're using a lure cause the line won't cast very far. If you're using a lure for bluegill, don't forget that bluegill likes to stay near docks, but if you're in a boat, look for trees in the water cause that's their hotspot.
When we were kids we used to spray the corn down with WD-40. Fish absolutely loved it. I think it's illegal now though
nice video young man.
I use a rebel crickethopper it's a fish catcher
I just used hotdog pieces and caught a few today at the local pond
I agree you do not need to use line over 4lb test but right now Im using 12lb because it's the only line I have that isn't crappy line to use so I use 12lb line. As I'm typing this, I just came inside from fishing at my pond and coughs 16 blue gill In about an hour total

Red wigglers are best for bluegill in my opinion there smaller and move around good on a hook a nightcrawler after you break it down don't really move
Small bits of frozen, raw shrimp. You get a whole lot from one average sized shrimp. Cheap, clean, easy to store, and they gobble em right down. Perch especially.
4lb test
1-2 small split shot
#8 Aberdeen hooks
Small thill bobber.
Run worm completely over the hook from mouth to tail and if you don't catch a bluegill your not fishin in water.
🤣🤣👌
All kinds of worms work, but for some reason In New York, they go insane for mealworms. They refuse to bite hot dogs, bread or corn here.
Thanks for the tip
For the bread use clear karo syrup mash up into a ball put in fridge before using holds together a long time................................
Karo syrup?
Live grubs are quick and easy for me!!
Thank you sir.
Bottom line is that when they are biting, they will bite on anything. When they aren't biting, they won't bite on anything. I accidentally found , bluegill loves salmon eggs , they were biting like a crazy on pautzke salmon eggs natural color
Really? I was just at Amazon looking at salmon eggs. Wasn't sure if I should get some. I might give them a try though.
I think pautzke green label is best
Great video. However, pet stores charge WAY too much for crickets( and everything else). Go to a bait store. You will get them for around a nickel each.
I usually have better luck for blue hill vs night crawlers. But all my friends are opposite night crawlers.
i really gotta say worms and corn are the best. living in sw texas, bread doesnt work as much as worms. our bluegills have learned and perfected the art of stripping the hooks clean. for those unlucky bluegills that get hooked, they into our bait bucket lol
Frozen popcorn shrimp (They used to be cheap back in the day)
Haven't checked in a while
Also Spam (don't laugh) has to be kept cold in a cooler , cut in very small chunks just covering the barb - Good for catfish as well
Lake Amistad ? Used to Catfish with a guide there in 70's /80's
He made his own stink bait & chummed with Soured Grain - we always caught our limit
Corn is easy and not messy. I Catch the hell out of them in my own backyard.
night crawlers are the best; crickets and small grass hoppers are killers too
1/64 or 1/32 oz. marabou jigs and then you don't have to keep baiting the hook.
Jigs the way to go imo
If anyone reads this just to let you know chicken makes really really good bait. One time I woke up early in the Morning to do some cat fishing in that pond but I was getting nothing but bluegill bites. Unfortunately I put on to big of a hook.
