- Hey guys,
Recently got a chance to use this new Pentax 17 (half-frame film camera). And wanna share my thoughts about it.
This is quite an honest review.
Hope it will help you!

Something to consider when talking about the price. I use a lot of point and shoot cameras. Last year I totaled 40. At $13 per camera I paid $560. Disposables have 27 exposures so that added up to 1,080 photos. It takes just 15 rolls of film to reach that many photos on the Pentax 17 (obviously at half the resolution). However, if you're someone like me who shoots a lot of disposable cameras then $500 seems like a very good price for a much better camera with a glass lens, different modes, better viewfinder, and the ability to achieve shallow depth of field compared to the standard point and shoots.
Nice pics, kudos!
I think the price is justified because
1. They are the only manufacturer with a very niche product.
2. They spent almost 5 years in research and development, brought back the people who had retired but were considered experts to consult and work.
3. They have to support the sold product at least for the next 3-5 years, which means maintaining the inventory of the spare parts
Now, for comparison, I'll use some popular products, rereleased Leica M6 sells for at least ten times the price, Contax T3 when launched in 2001 was around 1000 usd. I could give more examples, but there is limited space in here.
They probably didn't just start the film project for one product, they wanted to extend the line with more followups, which need more money.
And, at least in some countries in EU, they're selling like hot cakes and are constantly out of stock. Which means there are people who don't find it expensive.
Maybe you are right! I am actually just sharing my thoughts about it. After using it for a couple of weeks I really didn`t see any reason why it should cost more than 200$.
I understand that it is a new camera, niche product etc.
But still, if it was at least metal - ok.
I agree. It seems like a fantastic camera, when I saw the first leaks I was determined to buy one, also to support Pentax for the risks taken. But I was expecting 300 Euros, maybe 350 maximum. To me 550 is too much. The moment it drops (Black Friday, offers) I will get it for sure
How can you possibly claim the camera is 'overpriced' when it is literally the only new, half frame, warranteed film camera released in the last 20 years? Where is your evidence of other cheaper competitors?
Probably lomo is the best comparison since they dont make disposable camera level cameras. And even then its subpar build quality. No advance levers, barely any metals, plastic lenses, no auto exposure features, barely any range in exposure settings… so for the 450 euro price difference in apparat and this one does show.
Not the only new! Check out rollei
Homie, I’m not disagreeing with you completely on the price, I think $300 would have been the sweet spot, but this is a brand new camera brought to the market. On top of that, idk about you but I’ve purchased my fair share of “mint condition” cameras, and after shooting a few rolls, it turns out they’re not mint and need a bunch of maintenance done. For example, I have a Pentax that stopped working after a few rolls along with two Minoltas that the don’t have a working meter, and if you use anything past 1/250 you end up with black frames. At this point, in order to get them back to proper operating order, I’m spending at least $250, I got the cameras for $50-$150.
I got my Pentax 17 on eBay for 250€. I love it!
Don't get me wrong, I'm not buying a half frame film camera for $500 either, but we do have a warped perspective on how cheap film camera's are today. Just because you can buy them for 10% of the original price secondhand, doesn't mean they weren't expensive the day they came out. Adjusted for inflation, $500 was not unusual for a film camera. Think about the development costs for a completely new internal and external design, and needing to make a profit. I think the price is justified, but as a consumer wanting a HF camera, you're probably way better off buying a second hand Olympus Pen or something.
Maybe!
I was not making like a full research and inflation analysis to be honest. Just shared my thoughts
I think most of the discussion of the price conveniently ignores that we don't know how much it actually costs to produce.
Not really. Let`s compare it to the other half-frame or even full frame 35mm film cameras on the market (plastic ones) and see
@@JeanBlackk Are there any other newly-manufactured 35mm cameras which are not essentially reusable disposable cameras? There aren't that many cameras to compare it to...
@@antoniof.8614 yes, I agree. There is a teardown video available, which reveals they have made it extremely modern, not to forget the HD coating on the lens, easy to service and repair. It's easy to bash a product and compare it to a cheap alternative.
@@JeanBlackkgurl bye 😂
Totally agree with you on the price; This camera does not match its price. The price is what keeps me from purchasing.
Exactly the same!
Happy that I am not alone in it
@@JeanBlackk Not cheap for sure. But one should try to develop a new camera, production line, and also provide warranty and service worldwide then they may understand a bit more about pricing. 😀
@@jameschang8174 you said like you did 🫣
I disagree with the statement that people who priced it don't know what they are doing: it's selling like hot cakes, they will be rich.
yeah, of course they do. They just don`t care about the customers
@@JeanBlackk No, that's certainly not the case. Watch the teardown video to understand more about the product. They have incorporated so much under the hood. They made it easily serviceable as well as modular for repair. If they were only after money, like some modern brands of phones and electronics, they would have made it almost impossible to repair.
It’s not selling like hotcakes.
It’s sold just four to five weeks worth of stock. Now almost all of them are sitting on the shelves and not moving. Pentax/Ricoh will have to drop the price by at least $100++
Surprisingly fresh and honest review!
thank you :)
I don't like the $30 price tag for a roll of Portra 400 either... but I buy them anyway. If you are satisfied with the resolution of half a frame, this camera will pay for itself... double the photo for the same money, that's the whole point.
@@nikoladimitrijevic8172 yeah, but portra is the best film (one of). And as I said, there are a lot of other half frame cameras much cheaper
@@JeanBlackk In my country there is not a single one in decent condition... same goes for medium format... I've been waiting for a year for something even remotely good to come out and nothing. There is plenty of 35mm, other formats are almost non-existent in ads. Importing is expensive and complicated (thank god otherwise I'd be bankrupt). I like the vibe of video, all the best
@@nikoladimitrijevic8172 thank you
Comparing the price of a camera manufactured 40 years ago to something built today - something that comes with a warranty and full support from a still-functioning company - ignores reality. I wish the Pentax 17 was cheaper too, and it's a shame Pentax has to compete against pro cameras built 40 years ago price-wise, but they had to basically rebuild their film camera R&D from scratch, and build/distribute them in today's wage and price structure. I love my Pentax MX, but I understand that if they built that camera today, it would likely cost $1500-$2000.
Wish they made a Kodak Ektar H35N with a nice metal body and bigger glass lense for $100
yeah, me too
If kodak have dslr of new film camera will u want to try it?
sure!
Гарно знято! Якісь, як завжди, на висоті!
дякую!
I don't think it's expensive, it's a new film camera, everything is new, and the warranty, it's made of plastic because it's convenient for you to take out without weight.
maybe you are right, I am just sharing my personal opinion
I just wanted to confirm: do you think this camera Is overpriced?
super!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
@@НастасьяАшихина thank you!
RB67 go for about $700 to $900 here in the states.
in Europe easy 450-550$
So, why have half frame point and shoots historically retailed for more money adjust for inflation? you are trying to compete against 30 year old cameras. I have tried film twice in the last decade, I have only bought CLA'd cameras from reputable dealers, and I have yet to have one go more than 10 rolls without needing a repair, and a loss of motivation. I've been eyeing this because being new has value, and having parts that exist being made now. So, this seems like a glowing review to me, idk.
I have never had any problems with fixing my 20, 30, 40 years old cameras.
Once again, in this video I am sharing my thoughts after using it. I didn`t see any reason for it to cost that much.
@@JeanBlackk so for all of history point and shoot camera when new have cost this much, but 30 year old products are cheaper used, so this camera is trash? I just don't think you're of an age that you have interacted with *new* film cameras, so if it isn't 75% off due to age and being used, it seems like a scam.
чудове відео...недавно купив собі pentax k2, але він має не функціонуючий авторежим.
Дякую!
я щось взагалі навіть не чув про к2
Prices go up, but quantity usually doesn't. If anything, it decreases. Price isn't based on the value of the product. It's based on profit. Which is related to revinew and production. None of which reflect on the item itself.
So while it's a wonderful but overpriced Camara. It is so because of branding, not quality or functionality.
I know that, but I don`t like it. I don`t like that today everything is about quantity, not quality.
@JeanBlackk Oh, agreed. And I didn't figure you were ignorant. Just offering my perspective.
It's ridiculous how we, the customer, are just seen as cash flow and nothing else.

I don`t care about the price, il like how it looks, the quality of the pictures puts me off. I don`t buy it.
well this is what you get from a half-frame camera.
If you tried the camera you would love the quality of the pictures. I certainly like the quality. And of course my M6 and M7 offer much better quality, but not for 550€. The Pentax is not cheap, but it is not cheap to produce a niche product. And an old car is also much cheaper then a new one.
Where can I get a RZ67 for 500$??? Impossible in Germany…
I said rb67, I showed my rz67 because don`t have an rb67 xd
@@JeanBlackk oh, alright. 😁
In Japan, this camera is 700. Half frame camera for 700 usd…😅
Good thing for you in Japan you have literally unlimited options when it comes to the film cameras!
comparing this camera to a madium format is hilarious 😂 if anything pentax actually think about the consumers knowing films are expensive nowadays 🥱 like...12 shots vs 72 shots in 2024?! no wonder the numbers of subscriber and your recent content views are flops because of this type of content 😭😭
was I comparing it to the medium format? lol
I was comparing this camera to any other 35mm point and shoot film cameras. I believe my numbers are doing great :)
