What a wonderful channel. I am a retired mechanic and love the simplicity of these windmills and you are so informative in telling us how each component works and how things are assembled. These machines truely are how we were able to populate a continent in areas without ground water available. I worked cattle in central Texas for several years and don't remember seeing more than a handful of windmills. You are now one of my saved playlist.👌
You just made our day! We love hearing that!!!!!! They truly are amazing and will die out if we don’t get the word out. That’s what we’re doing. Thank you again!!!!!
Thank you for showing another Dempster, it always brings back memories of my grandpa and that all he would have is Dempster's until 2000 when my uncle switched to aeromotor and solar. I remember him assembling the wheel and changing the oil. He passed in 04 and I sure do miss him. This will help me when I find my own Dempster, again, thank you. Sorry it's a little winded (no pun intended)😅.
Man glad you like it. Yep you can do it! These mills are amazing and bring back a lot of memories for me as well. Thank you for watching and commenting! Have a great day!
Just watching on TV. We have an Aermotor here on on our ranch in Ontario Canada, but the old girls babbit bearings are completely seized, as we found the head in behind a barn and was laying in the grass for at least 35 years. Still an awesome piece of decor. Thanks for that great video!👍🇺🇲❤️
Man that’s awesome! At least hang it on a wall! That are so cool. If you get the hankering to rebuild it, it’s totally doable, as long as it doesn’t have the V spokes. It the gearbox says 702 you’re good!! Thank you for watching!!!!
@OkieWindmiller We found a 3 legged 16 foot tower, and it's sitting on top. It rotates, but the fan of course doesn't spin, due to the babbit bearings.
I work for a power utility for 37 years. Been hit twice by lineman dropping shit down off the top of the power pole. My advice is whenever you’re up on that tower “Mama” should be wearing a hardhat. Unless you’re looking for a new mama. It’s not If you might drop something, it’s when. Great video, I knew nothing about windmills till I found yours channel. 👍👍

Yup your right...didn't expect to see sucha task. Enjoyed especially cause I have a fondness for the ole windmills. Country boy that I am....lol Thx for sharing~!
Good job. I'm trying to keep my windmill original by using the square nuts. Although makes it slow for the assembly and disassembly. I love the look and sounds of the old windmills. Thank you for the videos.
Thank you!! We’re sure trying! This is new to us. Yes square head bolts are great, but most of the mills I deal with have been swamped to hex somewhere along the way. Thank you for taking the time to watch!!!!!

Another milestone for you, Shane -- best video so far! I've been waiting to see how that brake mechanism works and you did a perfect job of explaining and showing it. I'm gathering questions faster than you want to hear them, but I really appreciate the effort you put into filming and editing these. Thank you! Would you mind a couple of tips? 1) You do a LOT of hand wrenching but a battery powered tool would be awkward with so many different size nuts. Have you looked a ratcheting end wrenches? 2) You're right about oil attracting dirt, but those metal surfaces need lubrication. Have you looked a dry film lube like PTFE? Note that plain WD 40 is not a lubricant. Keep up the good work -- we're learning a lot here!
Thank you!!!! We’re sure trying!!!! I have some but they don’t last long, like they strip internally and don’t ratchet very long. Guess mama is putting too much torque on them! We have tried that(collectively amongst fellow windmillers) and it doesn’t creep where it needs to be. I have 2 cans on the truck for surfaces that are exposed and can be sprayed, but hinges and little tight spots, our go to it wd40 or chain and cable lube, which kind of moves around but also do t go very deep. We have tried everything on the market! Thank you for watching this one! Thank you for the comments also!!!
Yes you're correct about insects will make you hurt yourself I laughed my butt off about that one my stepson and me made a garden for Mother's Day and one of the Rocks I picked up had a brown recluse that bit me Square on the arm and I had to get a shot LOL
Years ago, I restored a 1908 Aermotor at a WWI aircraft museum in NY. I want to think it was a model ?603? It’s interesting to see the differences in a Dempster. T Y
Thank you! Soooo cool! So the 602 was from 1915-1933. It might have been a 502. I bet it had V spokes and not straight ones that screwed into the hub? Thank you for watching!!!!!!!
We watch you fix windmills on you tube we'd like to see one pump before you leave your channel enjoy your show keep more videos coming they're very interesting
Haha I hear you! That’s the only bad thing about windmills, the stinkin wind needs to be blowing, and in the summer the wind doesn’t do much, lol. Thank you for watching, please don’t run off, the video im working on now had water flowing!!!!! 😀
@@OkieWindmiller my husband watched another windmill show and they didn't explain anything they just fixed it we love your videos and will most definitely keep watching your videos it makes them worth watch when you explain what your doing step by step makes the videos worth watching and we love that your wife goes and helps you too that's awesome forever loyal fans

I’m telling you I would love that! We may do that soon! We have yet to buy one, but would love to add that view! Thank you for watching and commenting!!!!!!!
This was perfect timing. I just purchased a Dempster 10ft no 12. I only wish you would have video taped the rebuild on the engine. Maybe next time. You mentioned Mike did the rebuild does he document his builds?
Howdy! Yeah I’m sorry. When I take him one, he does it over the course of about a month, since he just does it in his spare time. Good idea tho! Where are you located?
We will add that soon. I have been told tho, that the camera needs to move every 4 seconds, or people loose interest. We’re learning and listening to every comment and trying to implement. Thank you for watching and commenting!!!!!
Man this stuff is really cool! I noticed when you had set up the blades you poured in some oil for lubrication. Is there a particular oil that is used for that or is it a heavy oil or a synthetic? And your right without windmills I'm sure many people would not make it and would have died. Also I saw where you were assembling the blades do you have a sequence you follow once you're ready to tighten and make sure there isn't vibration or just whatever you decide at the time? I think you said everyone has a way they do things I was curious your particular method! Again you guys are awesome and I always am looking for the next video.
Howdy! So we use non-detergent 10wt oil. I get mine at Orellys. You could use thinner, but not anything thicker. For the blades, i like to loosely put it together, give it a good shake, and a few spins so everything finds its sweet spot, then start by tightening the outer rings, start with one, the work my way around from there. Then I move to the inner rings, then the hub. There will be no vibration since they really don’t spin very fast. Also, you could use nuts to balance the wheel if you needed to, but nobody does and I don’t know if they ever have. The wheel sections are pretty much an exact copy of the others dimensionally. Thank you for the question and comments! Oh, thank you sooo much for watching and enjoying our work!!!!
I enjoy watching your videos. Just saying you need to watch your editing. You showed this rebuilt motor Saying who ever rebuilt it was the best rebuilder. But he forgot something on it. He forgot to replace or put the oil ring that oils the shaft for the upper arms that goes up and down.. Keep up the good work.....
Thank you for watching. So, he is still the best and here is why. The Dempster doesn’t use an oil ring. If you look on the inside of both big gears, there is a metal tab that collects oil and dumps it onto the pitman guide, which distributes oil to the whole upper area. Very ingenious. Thank you for commenting, that’s what we’re here for is to teach. Thank you again for watching!!!!
Not a problem!!! It’s easy to get them confused. I should have done a better job explaining the differences! Sounds like a video is in order!!!!😀. Have a great day!!!!!
LOTS of improvements, by the week! Yeah, we're all a bit mechanical. But, I sure will feel better if "Momma", would never walk near the tower with her eyes towards the ground! There's nothing up there you want to bounce off you, even the spring that got left up there last time! Peace.
Man thank you! And I hear you. She normally never does, until then, and she didn’t even realize it till she watched the video, and said I was right under you! She kinda got in trouble, lol. Thank you for watching and commenting!!!!!!
Hey talking point for next video or if u think you can answer it in a comment . What u think of DIY setup building a smaller windmill my neighbor has a 20 foot well hand dug an i was thinking of doing one for a small pound for a couple ducks an maybe a couple coi fish... is there something small i can build thats not huge an can be made with some pullys or something. Looking for like 12 tall build to add that... wife thought was something like u see at a tractor supply as a decoration but make functional
Well they make a 4’ diameter(Ironman Windmills), and that would work good without being too big, and you won’t have to try to figure out the “how to make it pump”, and we still install 6’ windmills all the time. It could go on a 21’ tower and would look amazing. That’s the way I would go…….
Hi there I watch you fix the wind wheel I'm run in to a wind mill how u fix them.im start to learn how to look what the problem. With them.i repair wells my job I been doing this pump repair.for 18 years It was my uncle business .he teach me how to fix them.im still learning still it's Sk pump repair in safford.ariz hot come here hot but we don't have the wet air hear
Yeah they are! I love crescent wrenches but man would love to get my hands on some old Amish square wrenches. Maybe not to use everyday, but just to have😁. Thank you for watching!!!!!
FYI - From the WD-40 website - Myth: WD-40 Multi-Use Product is not really a lubricant. Fact: While the “W-D” in WD-40 stands for Water Displacement, WD-40 Multi-Use Product is a unique, special blend of lubricants. The product's formulation also contains anti-corrosion agents and ingredients for penetration, water displacement and soil removal.
True, hardly anybody used lock washers, I’m one of the few. I was wondering when someone would mention that because every time I do it, I’m thinking here come the comments 🤣. In my mind, it feels like I’m at least trying. I figure if I get them tight enough, the flat washer won’t spin either. I only do that on the dempsters with the slotted bolt locations. Good catch tho Sir!!! 😀. I don’t like using nylock nuts, so this is what I do. Thank you for watching sir and for commenting. Let me know what you would do different, I’m open for suggestions!
I know that the manual uses lock washers, but I don’t like lock washers on a slot, that also defeats the purpose in my mind, so the flat washer in my mind makes it better. Who knows ? Thank you sir again for watching.
Some do, most don’t, they like the patina and mismatch. I prefer the patina, but I do agree, this one could have used a little to at least even out the color. Thank you for watching and commenting!!!!!
I had the same thought - especially for the windmills that are just used for nostalgia. Full repaint would not be necessary, but maybe a clear coat to help preserve the metal on every job would be nice. Lori could be providing that service while Shane is busy on other tasks.
I'm a Windmill Fan.... I study Geology and I hope to put up our own windmill sometime soon. Dempster, Bradley, Aero motor, .... I found this,... this is some of my reading. List of Quarries in Indiana & Quarry Links, Photographs and Articles Go to Page Attica Bedford Bloomington Brazil thru Odon Oolitic Orange thru Williams Brazil (south-west of), Clay County, Indiana - the Henry Ashley Limestone Quarry (Limestone) (excerpt from First Annual Report of the Geological Survey of Indiana, Made During the Year 1869, by E. T. Cox, State Geologist, Assisted by Prof. Frank H. Bradley, Dr. Rufus Haymond, and Dr. G. M. Levette, Indianapolis: 1869, pp. 83.) “Building-Stone. - The sandstone which overlies the main ‘Block’ coal I, is, in places an excellent building-stone, and is extensively used in Brazil (Indiana) for making foundations, lintels, steps, and other parts of buildings....” “The limestone that overlies the upper seam of ‘Block’ coal K, was quarried on Mr. Henry Ashley’s place, about a half mile south-west of Brazil, many years ago, for building abutments to bridges and culverts on the national road; It ranges from two to ten feet in thickness, and may be found at a number of places on the Ashley land, on Garlick & Collins’ land north of Brazil, and on the property of Mr. Grimes, in the neighborhood of the village of Ashboro. It cracks and falls to pieces after some years’ exposure to the action of the weather, and cannot be considered a durable building stone....” This is about stone of Indiana Geology,... but the name and dates are interesting, Bradley and 1870!!!
That’s some awesome reading right there! Oklahoma is just as geologically diverse as that I bet! You should get an Aermotor, still supportable. The others are all good too, just harder to come up with replacement parts. Good luck!!!
@@OkieWindmiller I grew up in rural Australia with these everywhere and now I get to find out how they work and how to fix them. I will be paying more attention next time I'm near one
Man yeah! Buddy I hear that there aren’t many windmillers down there, might be a good business to get into. Or you could fly us down and I could teach ya everything I know😁
Does anyone ever put a counter weight with a section ofcable and a pulley attached to the rod (above the hand pump) to offset the weight of the sucker rod?
I have never seen it, but is a good idea! Kinda like those window sash weights. It would be very helpful for those that are set deeper than they should be with the size windmill they have. Thank you for watching!!!!!
@@OkieWindmiller LOL window sash weights... that statement makes you sound much older than you look... I just started watching your videos and, even though I'm not a pump/well guy by trade, iv done a little bit of submersible work as a crane operator, and some turbine work just helping the pump guys working on our pumps on our farming operation. But I've definitely Always had mechanical abilities and my wheels are always turning with ways to make my work easier. I was thinking if you had a type of clamp(s) with a short section of chain connecting the two clamps together, you could suspend the sections of sucker rods from the sections of pipe, so when you lift that section to set aside, you wouldn't have to hold the sucker rod with your hand. Oh, and go back and read my comment on your other video (at the equine rehab) thanks for your videos.
Awesome Sir! Will do! Thank you again. Yes sucker rod hurts, lol. We bought a 1927 farmhouse and have been restoring it as the funds become available, and I replaced all the windows, and those weights were there. I also watch a lot of This old house!😝

Man whatever you do you better not make that pretty young lady mad !!!!! You would be totally lost without her help !!!!!
LMAO !!!!
Yes I would, she knows what I need 5 min before I do. Thank you for watching!!!!
SORRY I thought they were the same motors till I went back and watched the video again. I appalogize.
Yes I'm a puddin sub also
Well they make a 4’ diameter(Ironman Windmills), and that would work good without being too big, and you won’t have to try to figure out the “how to make it pump”, and we still install 6’ windmills all the time. It could go on a 21’ tower and would look amazing. That’s the way I would go…….
Hi there I watch you fix the wind wheel I'm run in to a wind mill how u fix them.im start to learn how to look what the problem. With them.i repair wells my job
I been doing this pump repair.for 18 years
It was my uncle business .he teach me how to fix them.im still learning still it's
Sk pump repair in safford.ariz hot come here hot but we don't have the wet air hear
Yes dry air is awesome! We have the wet humid sticky air! I bet you e seen a lot in 18 years in the pump business!!! Thank you for watching!!
Those smooth jaw pliers are hard to find nowadays.
Yeah they are! I love crescent wrenches but man would love to get my hands on some old Amish square wrenches. Maybe not to use everyday, but just to have😁. Thank you for watching!!!!!
Very nice
Thank you!!!!
Might review your handling those half pound loose pieces with that wife you so proud of walking around directly under the action.
Thank you! We’re comfortable working the way we do. We’re not new to it and really are very careful. Thank you for watching!!!
Man thank you! Now I have ammo for the WD-40 haters!!!!!!🤣 Thank you for watching!!!!
I noticed in a previous video and this video that you add a lock washer with a flat washer which defeats the locking ability making it just a spacer.
@@OkieWindmiller - I would never tell you how to do your job, just noticed that.
Haha buddy I don’t know everything’s and welcome all feedback!!!!!! Thank you sir!
I am surprised the customer had you do all that work and did not want to spray the fan with a few spray cans of Rustoleum to make it look new
Some do, most don’t, they like the patina and mismatch.
👍👍😎
Thank you sir!!!!!!😀😀
Please try to keep camera steady so we don't get dizzy thanks
Dang and this was my smoothest one yet😝. We will try. Thank you for watching! Sorry about the dizziness!!
Man thank you! I will look into that!! I’m all about things that will help make it better!!!!!!!
🤠🤠👍👍
Thank you very much !!!!!
I'm a Windmill Fan.... I study Geology and I hope to put up our own windmill sometime soon.
Dempster, Bradley, Aero motor, .... I found this,... this is some of my reading.
List of Quarries in Indiana & Quarry Links, Photographs and Articles

Brazil (south-west of), Clay County, Indiana - the Henry Ashley Limestone Quarry (Limestone) (excerpt from First Annual Report of the Geological Survey of Indiana, Made During the Year 1869, by E. T. Cox, State Geologist, Assisted by Prof. Frank H. Bradley, Dr. Rufus Haymond, and Dr. G. M. Levette, Indianapolis: 1869, pp. 83.)
“Building-Stone. - The sandstone which overlies the main ‘Block’ coal I, is, in places an excellent building-stone, and is extensively used in Brazil (Indiana) for making foundations, lintels, steps, and other parts of buildings....”
“The limestone that overlies the upper seam of ‘Block’ coal K, was quarried on Mr. It cracks and falls to pieces after some years’ exposure to the action of the weather, and cannot be considered a durable building stone....”
This is about stone of Indiana Geology,... but the name and dates are interesting, Bradley and 1870!!!
That’s some awesome reading right there! Oklahoma is just as geologically diverse as that I bet! You should get an Aermotor, still supportable. The others are all good too, just harder to come up with replacement parts. Good luck!!!
Where are you finding the parts for the dempster I need some
Windmill-parts.com! Sounds too good to be true but it is!
The hub was used and a fella in Mustang; Oklahoma has a few parts also
DID NOT RELISE HOW MUCH ID LIKE THIS
Man thank you! We love it too! Thank you for watching!!!!
Me contrate para te ajudar.
Aprender com você será uma honra.
Abraços do Brasil.
🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Man that would be cool! For now it’s just us 2. Are there windmills down there? I know there are in Argentina! Thank you for watching!!
Awesome! I guess they do have large cattle ranches and they need to water them. Could you stay busy working on windmills if you were to learn the trade?
Maybe you just need to trim that stache…
Where’s the fun in that?!🤣
Wrong again dumb dumb what is 22 I spin around on a 45 ft windmill in the northern territory at Gorey I've already seen what it looks like to go around and wind haha❤😂🎉😢😮😅😊
45 footer in the NT! Comet??
Is there a safety to keep the motor from flying apart in high wind?
Not really. The governor spring on the tail has that job, but they can still beat themselves to a quick death. I tell people to try to remember to turn it off when you know it may be windy or stormy.
