What a wonderful channel. I am a retired mechanic and love the simplicity of these windmills and you are so informative in telling us how each component works and how things are assembled. These machines truely are how we were able to populate a continent in areas without ground water available. I worked cattle in central Texas for several years and don't remember seeing more than a handful of windmills. You are now one of my saved playlist.👌

Thank you for showing another Dempster, it always brings back memories of my grandpa and that all he would have is Dempster's until 2000 when my uncle switched to aeromotor and solar. I remember him assembling the wheel and changing the oil. He passed in 04 and I sure do miss him. This will help me when I find my own Dempster, again, thank you. Sorry it's a little winded (no pun intended)😅.

I work for a power utility for 37 years. Been hit twice by lineman dropping shit down off the top of the power pole. My advice is whenever you’re up on that tower “Mama” should be wearing a hardhat. Unless you’re looking for a new mama. It’s not If you might drop something, it’s when. Great video, I knew nothing about windmills till I found yours channel. 👍👍

Just watching on TV. We have an Aermotor here on on our ranch in Ontario Canada, but the old girls babbit bearings are completely seized, as we found the head in behind a barn and was laying in the grass for at least 35 years. Still an awesome piece of decor. Thanks for that great video!👍🇺🇲❤️

@OkieWindmiller We found a 3 legged 16 foot tower, and it's sitting on top. It rotates, but the fan of course doesn't spin, due to the babbit bearings.

Good job. I'm trying to keep my windmill original by using the square nuts. Although makes it slow for the assembly and disassembly. I love the look and sounds of the old windmills. Thank you for the videos.

Years ago, I restored a 1908 Aermotor at a WWI aircraft museum in NY. I want to think it was a model ?603? It’s interesting to see the differences in a Dempster. T Y

Another milestone for you, Shane -- best video so far! I've been waiting to see how that brake mechanism works and you did a perfect job of explaining and showing it. I'm gathering questions faster than you want to hear them, but I really appreciate the effort you put into filming and editing these. Thank you! Would you mind a couple of tips? 1) You do a LOT of hand wrenching but a battery powered tool would be awkward with so many different size nuts. Have you looked a ratcheting end wrenches? 2) You're right about oil attracting dirt, but those metal surfaces need lubrication. Have you looked a dry film lube like PTFE? Note that plain WD 40 is not a lubricant. Keep up the good work -- we're learning a lot here!
Thank you!!!! We’re sure trying!!!! I have some but they don’t last long, like they strip internally and don’t ratchet very long. Guess mama is putting too much torque on them! We have tried that(collectively amongst fellow windmillers) and it doesn’t creep where it needs to be. I have 2 cans on the truck for surfaces that are exposed and can be sprayed, but hinges and little tight spots, our go to it wd40 or chain and cable lube, which kind of moves around but also do t go very deep. Man this stuff is really cool! I noticed when you had set up the blades you poured in some oil for lubrication. Is there a particular oil that is used for that or is it a heavy oil or a synthetic? And your right without windmills I'm sure many people would not make it and would have died. Also I saw where you were assembling the blades do you have a sequence you follow once you're ready to tighten and make sure there isn't vibration or just whatever you decide at the time? I think you said everyone has a way they do things I was curious your particular method! Again you guys are awesome and I always am looking for the next video.
Howdy! So we use non-detergent 10wt oil. I get mine at Orellys. You could use thinner, but not anything thicker. For the blades, i like to loosely put it together, give it a good shake, and a few spins so everything finds its sweet spot, then start by tightening the outer rings, start with one, the work my way around from there. Then I move to the inner rings, then the hub. There will be no vibration since they really don’t spin very fast. Also, you could use nuts to balance the wheel if you needed to, but nobody does and I don’t know if they ever have. The wheel sections are pretty much an exact copy of the others dimensionally. I enjoy watching your videos. Just saying you need to watch your editing. You showed this rebuilt motor Saying who ever rebuilt it was the best rebuilder. But he forgot something on it. He forgot to replace or put the oil ring that oils the shaft for the upper arms that goes up and down.. Keep up the good work.....
Thank you for watching. So, he is still the best and here is why. The Dempster doesn’t use an oil ring. If you look on the inside of both big gears, there is a metal tab that collects oil and dumps it onto the pitman guide, which distributes oil to the whole upper area. Very ingenious. with all the open spaces around you it should be easy to learn and get some practice before you start flying close to things. you'll still probably replace a few blades before your through 😊😊

I had the same thought - especially for the windmills that are just used for nostalgia. Full repaint would not be necessary, but maybe a clear coat to help preserve the metal on every job would be nice. Lori could be providing that service while Shane is busy on other tasks.

True, hardly anybody used lock washers, I’m one of the few. I was wondering when someone would mention that because every time I do it, I’m thinking here come the comments 🤣. In my mind, it feels like I’m at least trying. I figure if I get them tight enough, the flat washer won’t spin either. I only do that on the dempsters with the slotted bolt locations. Good catch tho Sir!!! 😀. I don’t like using nylock nuts, so this is what I do. Thank you for watching sir and for commenting. Let me know what you would do different, I’m open for suggestions!
I know that the manual uses lock washers, but I don’t like lock washers on a slot, that also defeats the purpose in my mind, so the flat washer in my mind makes it better. Who knows ? Thank you sir again for watching.

What u think of DIY setup building a smaller windmill my neighbor has a 20 foot well hand dug an i was thinking of doing one for a small pound for a couple ducks an maybe a couple coi fish... is there something small i can build thats not huge an can be made with some pullys or something. Looking for like 12 tall build to add that... wife thought was something like u see at a tractor supply as a decoration but make functional
Well they make a 4’ diameter(Ironman Windmills), and that would work good without being too big, and you won’t have to try to figure out the “how to make it pump”, and we still install 6’ windmills all the time. It could go on a 21’ tower and would look amazing. That’s the way I would go…….
Does anyone ever put a counter weight with a section ofcable and a pulley attached to the rod (above the hand pump) to offset the weight of the sucker rod?
I have never seen it, but is a good idea! Kinda like those window sash weights. It would be very helpful for those that are set deeper than they should be with the size windmill they have. Thank you for watching!!!!!

I just started watching your videos and, even though I'm not a pump/well guy by trade, iv done a little bit of submersible work as a crane operator, and some turbine work just helping the pump guys working on our pumps on our farming operation. But I've definitely Always had mechanical abilities and my wheels are always turning with ways to make my work easier. I was thinking if you had a type of clamp(s) with a short section of chain connecting the two clamps together, you could suspend the sections of sucker rods from the sections of pipe, so when you lift that section to set aside, you wouldn't have to hold the sucker rod with your hand. Oh, and go back and read my comment on your other video (at the equine rehab) thanks for your videos.

Not really. The governor spring on the tail has that job, but they can still beat themselves to a quick death. I tell people to try to remember to turn it off when you know it may be windy or stormy.

Man this stuff is really cool! I noticed when you had set up the blades you poured in some oil for lubrication. Is there a particular oil that is used for that or is it a heavy oil or a synthetic? And your right without windmills I'm sure many people would not make it and would have died. Also I saw where you were assembling the blades do you have a sequence you follow once you're ready to tighten and make sure there isn't vibration or just whatever you decide at the time? I think you said everyone has a way they do things I was curious your particular method! Again you guys are awesome and I always am looking for the next video.
Howdy! So we use non-detergent 10wt oil. I get mine at Orellys. You could use thinner, but not anything thicker.
For the blades, i like to loosely put it together, give it a good shake, and a few spins so everything finds its sweet spot, then start by tightening the outer rings, start with one, the work my way around from there. Then I move to the inner rings, then the hub. There will be no vibration since they really don’t spin very fast. Also, you could use nuts to balance the wheel if you needed to, but nobody does and I don’t know if they ever have. The wheel sections are pretty much an exact copy of the others dimensionally. I enjoy watching your videos. Just saying you need to watch your editing. You showed this rebuilt motor Saying who ever rebuilt it was the best rebuilder. But he forgot something on it. He forgot to replace or put the oil ring that oils the shaft for the upper arms that goes up and down.. Keep up the good work.....
Thank you for watching. So, he is still the best and here is why. The Dempster doesn’t use an oil ring. If you look on the inside of both big gears, there is a metal tab that collects oil and dumps it onto the pitman guide, which distributes oil to the whole upper area. Very ingenious. I had the same thought - especially for the windmills that are just used for nostalgia. Full repaint would not be necessary, but maybe a clear coat to help preserve the metal on every job would be nice. Lori could be providing that service while Shane is busy on other tasks.

I noticed in a previous video and this video that you add a lock washer with a flat washer which defeats the locking ability making it just a spacer.
True, hardly anybody used lock washers, I’m one of the few. I was wondering when someone would mention that because every time I do it, I’m thinking here come the comments 🤣. In my mind, it feels like I’m at least trying. I figure if I get them tight enough, the flat washer won’t spin either. I only do that on the dempsters with the slotted bolt locations. Good catch tho Sir!!! 😀. I don’t like using nylock nuts, so this is what I do. Thank you for watching sir and for commenting. Let me know what you would do different, I’m open for suggestions!
I know that the manual uses lock washers, but I don’t like lock washers on a slot, that also defeats the purpose in my mind, so the flat washer in my mind makes it better. Who knows ? Thank you sir again for watching.

What u think of DIY setup building a smaller windmill my neighbor has a 20 foot well hand dug an i was thinking of doing one for a small pound for a couple ducks an maybe a couple coi fish... is there something small i can build thats not huge an can be made with some pullys or something. Looking for like 12 tall build to add that... wife thought was something like u see at a tractor supply as a decoration but make functional

Well they make a 4’ diameter(Ironman Windmills), and that would work good without being too big, and you won’t have to try to figure out the “how to make it pump”, and we still install 6’ windmills all the time. It could go on a 21’ tower and would look amazing. That’s the way I would go…….
Does anyone ever put a counter weight with a section ofcable and a pulley attached to the rod (above the hand pump) to offset the weight of the sucker rod?
I have never seen it, but is a good idea! Kinda like those window sash weights. It would be very helpful for those that are set deeper than they should be with the size windmill they have. Thank you for watching!!!!!

I just started watching your videos and, even though I'm not a pump/well guy by trade, iv done a little bit of submersible work as a crane operator, and some turbine work just helping the pump guys working on our pumps on our farming operation. But I've definitely Always had mechanical abilities and my wheels are always turning with ways to make my work easier. I was thinking if you had a type of clamp(s) with a short section of chain connecting the two clamps together, you could suspend the sections of sucker rods from the sections of pipe, so when you lift that section to set aside, you wouldn't have to hold the sucker rod with your hand.
Oh, and go back and read my comment on your other video (at the equine rehab) thanks for your videos.

Is there a safety to keep the motor from flying apart in high wind?
Not really. The governor spring on the tail has that job, but they can still beat themselves to a quick death. I tell people to try to remember to turn it off when you know it may be windy or stormy.
