The House on the Rock, nestled in the scenic hills of Wisconsin, boasts a rich history dating back to the 1940s when Alex Jordan Jr. began constructing the extraordinary structure atop Deer Shelter Rock. Originally envisioned as a retreat showcasing Jordan's eclectic collections and architectural whimsy, the House on the Rock has since evolved into a beloved tourist attraction. Its labyrinthine corridors lead visitors through a mesmerizing maze of themed rooms, filled with an astonishing array of artifacts, antiques, and curiosities from around the world. Over the years, the House on the Rock has grown in both size and renown, captivating generations of visitors with its unparalleled blend of imagination, creativity, and eccentricity.

I've been to the House on the Rock. The best way I can describe it is that it's as if you were walking through a real-life cartoon. It's equal parts beautiful, creepy, arcane and mesmerizing all at the same time. If you're ever in the Spring Green/Dodgeville area of Wisconsin you owe it to yourself to stop and take a tour!

I was there for 6 hours... and still didn't see everything! One day I'll go back... strongly recommend. A little 420 enhances the surrealness... You'll also encounter people from all over the world there, speaking in an array of languages.

The infinity room was much more impressive to me as a kid than as an adult. The Carousel is a true wonder though, and the "House on the Rock" is more a museum of curiosities than architectural exhibit. It's truly worth the time if you want to spend a day seeing something you won't see anywhere else in the world.

    • @restinwalken
      @restinwalken 15 дней назад

Were you able to walk out on it when you were a child or was it banned by that point? Cause being able to walk out in it is a different experience. Than it is now that its blocked off.
Found it fascinating because of the way it was suspended along with the infinity aspect was just terrifying and cool.
I think it was more impactful as a kid because our imagination of being able to delve into what if it really is infinite is easier. The ability to pretend is deeper.

I visited the House on a Rock 25 yrs ago, as part of a motorcycle trip, sampling roadside attractions. The quirky experience had a lasting impression, to be sure! I’ve had many experiences in my life, but I continue to occasionally tell the story to this day! No verbal description can possibly do it justice. Words cannot truly prepare one for the true extent of the bizarrely incongruous collection of stuff. It really DOES take 3-4 hours just to get from one end to the other! It goes on forever! I am overdue for a refresher tour!

There is nothing else like it. It is astonishing, garish, bizarre, and awe-inspiring. There is nothing tasteful or restrained about it. It is a testament to the aesthetic that if 1 glass paperweight is lovely then 1000 of them would be 1000 times as lovely. It has a disparate series of unrelated collections - everything from antique music boxes to doll houses to moonshine liquor jugs with faces and odd slogans to giant electrical components. The juxtapositions are jarring. The last time I was there you finish a tour of charming doll houses and run into a grotesque statue of the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse.. It has to be seen to believed.

I respectfully disagree that one visit is enough. I've been there myself, and each time I discovered something new, something I overlooked before. It's enchanting each time, but I don't go very often, maybe 3 or 4 times in my entire life, and usually it's to introduce someone new to the area to something out of the ordinary. The first time i went was as a kid, and my dad told me everything for the house was carried up on the guy's back, and I thought he meant all in one trip. After learning the truth, I wasn't as impressed with it, and my dad had a good laugh at how hard I was to please. Regardless, the gift shop book about the house was one of my favorite childhood books for picture gazing.

I've been there a couple of times, the last time was 20 years ago. It's close enough to the tourist hell of the Wisconsin Dells for a day trip. (Now Ryan, there's a video for you to do. The Wisconsin Dells.)
I've only gone into the house. It's not really a house as a place to live. Maybe a portion of it, but it's too disorganized and spread out. It's the Disney World of houses, where each room/area has it's own theme. Much of it is just creepy.
If you ever wanted to see what a house would look like if the designer was on a particular hallucinogenic drug, this would be the place, lol.
Oh, and I have a thing about heights. Had to have a friend walk the infinity room to get video... 😁

Been wanting to go see this place for several years. It reminds be of a merge between Ripleys and COSI, two of my favorite places as a kid, and to take my kids when they were young. I've met a few eccentric folks who collected things, they had very interesting stuff, some had great stories to go along with said items. Even if I wasn't into their specific niche, I appreciate their collections, their knowledge, and decication. As a former Inspector, fraud prevention and quality assurence, I've had the opporotunity to privately view some really awesome stuff, mostly auto related.

I've been there on three separate occasions. Most recently was summer of last year. Just before the tour begins, there's a very small museum called the Alex Jordan Center, with plaques containing various facts and stories about his life. I remember a few things from the place. Regarding about the five minute mark in this video, Alex had known about Deer Shelter Rock for a long time. He would have picnics near there as often as he could, because of how fascinating he found the Rock to be. The original owner of the land with the Rock was a farmer, and Alex bought the land when the farmer died. I seem to recall that the Rock was well known by Native Americans from the area too. It was a guaranteed place they could build a fire beneath, regardless of weather conditions. Hence the "shelter" in Deer Shelter Rock.

I can't fully explain this place. My friend's goal who brought me there was to watch me mentally crack. She admits she enjoys watching every crack in this place. Don't let the homes and gardens fool you, they're a small percentage of what is housed in this place. Yes the house is kinda cool and old schooly, but everything else hiding behind the scenes is just ludicrous!. Go back to the image at 0:09 and all those warehouses are part of the experience. Beyond the house is just vast amounts of STUFF. Each warehouse is a different theme and it just keeps getting crazier and crazier. After a certain point my brain was just like, "what is all this!?!??! He's just a gigantic hoarder!". I recall one place that had the same set of tea pots at least 500 times over. Creepy mannequins all dressed up to "play" instruments. A carousel that been chopped and put back together again with other mannequins. A room that's just full of musical organ parts all over the place. And SO MUCH MORE. Again, it's hard to just explain it all and what it's all supposed to mean. It took me a day to decompress from the place cause it really just didn't make sense to me at all.

*this comment includes recs for the area* Dude, I LOVE the House on the Rock! It's the only attraction that I've gone to multiple times and still feel like I should go more. I will happily go again any time with people who are seeing it for the first time, or the 70th. But even as an introvert who doesn't feel like doing much outside the home, and would almost never bother to put in the effort to visit anywhere alone, I would still absolutely go through house on the Rock all by myself with zero problems.
With the House on the Rock it doesn't matter .. it's just a fun, whimsical place to spend the day. They're are so many nooks and crannies, and such a wide diversity of vibes, that you can go through as quickly or slowly as you want but you will always find a place to linger if you feel like it. If crowds stress you out there are places to sequester yourself, and if you like interacting with strangers there are larger rooms where you may see many other people.
But it's so uniquely built that although there could be hundreds of people in the House on the Rock at the same time, it could easily feel like there's only a couple dozen at most.
Like, you see all these other people but the design of the home pretty much always allows everyone a front line view of whatever space they're at, and if there is some sort of blockage then you just wait a bit and that person will leave, having been distracted by something else.
I usually set aside the whole day so we can go through all 3 sections but you could really adjust it however you want. The first section is a lot of history so you can skim through that quickly if you're mostly glancing at pictures, but if you wanted to read everything you could take some time with it. Same with so many of the collections: you can admire them by mostly skimming and just pausing here and there, or you could stop at any one of I'm sure hundreds if not thousands of display cases filled with so many little bits and bobs you could easily miss something even if you stopped and stared at that same display 5 times.
When you get to the giant whale, all of the walls have display cases filled with different memorabilia. It would be so easy to walk right past cool details without even realizing it. Like on the 3rd(?) floor, one of the display cases has a menu from the Titanic. I want to say it's either a real recovered piece of a menu from the Titanic, but it may instead be a recreation that is accurate to the details. I honestly can't remember but it being a recreation would make more sense in terms of how valuable I would think it might be? Idk if you'd want to leave it in such a random place where there's limited visibility. Idk
Regardless, if you are watching this video because you were curious about the House on the Rock and aren't sure if it will be worth it; all I can say is if anything sounds interesting to you about it, then it is. It's a bizarre and endearing place, and usually even the skeptics will find at least one thing to find interesting or at least so bizarre it's briefly intriguing.
Spring Green WI is the nearest town. It's small but a fun little place to stop by. They have an Irish pub my friends and I always stop by, and unless he's moved there's this tiny store on a main road that's filled with absolutely gorgeous opal jewelry of all kinds of opal. There's a nice little tea shop and a co-op too, plus other things.
This video briefly showed it but there are also Frank Lloyd Wright (FLW) attractions nearby which also are definitely worth a visit.
There's a visitor center along the river that used to have a surprisingly good restaurant in it although idk if the restaurant is still there. There's also a FLW gift shop that has some fun and unique things. I got some beautiful earrings there over 10 years ago, which have a design from one of his architectural masterpieces.
You can also take 2 tours for FLW. the first is one I've taken and it's pretty cool .. you get to go through his building where he taught students, and you get to see the small theater/auditorium he built next to it. It's a pretty chill tour. There's a second half in haven't been able to do yet but is on my agenda next time I'm around. In that, you need comfy clothes and shoes because you do a brief little hike up the hill from that building to this silo like structure he built that everyone at the time was convinced was foolhardy and would be tipped over at the first strong wind. But it turned out his design meant wind cycles around it instead so it's actually a pretty safe place to be. At least, that's my vague memory of the info we were told at the only time I took that tour probably over 10 years ago.
There are some wild motels in the greater vicinity too by the way, but the one that is the most ridiculous is also technically only fantasy suites so they only let 2 people rent the room. Or used to. That place is interesting because of the bizarre rooms, but also it's cool because there's a freaking plane just chilling out on its front lawn. You can just casually tour the inside of a plane that way. It's cool.
I've stayed in the astronaut room and the hot air balloon room so far. I want to do the tower room someday. Lol and don't worry, you can just go with a friend since that's what I've always done 😂
Anyway. That whole area of WI is really quirky and fun so I highly recommend. It's also the Driftless Area which has some really beautiful low rolling hills and other landscape. It's a place that didn't end up getting squished down by the glaciers like the surrounding areas did, so it has some more unique aspects that were removed millennia ago from other areas. I think you can find some somewhat unique flora too maybe? I can't remember ngl.
Side note, if you do visit there and plan to be in the larger WI area I also highly recommend you go to Kinstone, which is near Fountain City. It's basically the Stonehenge of the Midwest, but if it were spread out into different sections on hilly wildflower-laden farmland.

Whilst it's definitely in need of a lot more support financially, it's well worth the endeavor to see the House on the Rock if you're ever able.
A eccentric eclectic collection of weird. Absolutely will keep going when I can.

I've been here and I can safely say it is an experience like no other. It's eccentric, whimsical, spiritual and strange. I believe that was its true intention, and there is no other place anywhere like it. Most I've encountered that work there are pleasant, some not so much. The impression that best describes it for me is intense deja-vu, combined with if you're a little odd but interested and interesting, it leaves its mark on you as an experience you'll never forget, and never regret.

In some ways this reminds me of the Crazy House in Da Lat, Vietnam. But this house wins for all the weird things inside, especially that Carousel. The main thing that the Crazy House does different, is the fact you can stay in the rooms there, and they are all unique. Great vid of some weird guy doing what he wanted, I love it.

I’ve been here several times having grown up in Wisconsin. I don’t live there anymore, but I’ve still been back to the HotR twice to bring my son there. Last year we went during Halloween, I HIGHLY recommend doing the Halloween tour after dark. Especially if you’ve already been there at least once. It’s the perfect place for a haunted house attraction. We had so much fun. And some of those areas are super creepy in the dark, with an actor about to jump scare you. So worth it 😉

This is the weirdest road trip stop ever.. IN THE BEST WAY! The collections in this place are priceless and it is GIANT! I can’t imagine he built everything inside.. the whale.. the titanic.. or if he brought it in and assembled it in there. There are many old school toys that any generation would relate with. PHONE lips.. ALF!?! I was a baby when ALF was around but forgot all about the show. So many priceless antiques! But the place is giant. GIANT.. can’t believe he built it.. it’s like fear and loathing in Las Vegas style mall of America. You have to go there.

I think I may have suggested this topic a couple years ago! Lol. Anyway, great vid, my dude. First visited there sometime in the late 70's/early 80's and have been back many times, tho not in the last several years since my kid's grown. But within a couple miles you have House on the Rock, Taliesin (Frank Lloyd Wright's studio), and the American Player's Theatre, an outdoor venue that does a lot of Shakespearean and classic Greek theater. I'm not on their tourism board, but there's some cool shit to do in Spring Green, WI. 🤘

I went there without warning. DEEPLY trippy. Not nightmare fuel, but kinda is. The huge organ is actually an assemblage from SEVERAL old theatre organs...none of which are connected to each other much less wind or the keyboard(s). Just a fantastical visual feat. The "mechanical orchestras" are a wonder in themselves. All done with pneumatics long before servos electric motors. if you have the chance...GO!

Very interesting video on a house, I had never heard about. Your comments regarding maintaining the house as well as tourist attraction is probably not any different than what we have here in California with the Herst Castle and the Winchester House. Though the Herst Castle has several tour options, one walk through more or less does it. Same said with the Winchester House. That said however, each time we travel up those areas from South Ca, we make a point to do another tour. After all, It's History and our admission tickets are our way to help preserve them.

I visited here as a teen. I could not walk all the way to the end of the Infinity room; It's so high! The structure itself begins to wobble about halfway in, More so with each step further that you take. I didn't have the stomach for it. 😅
