Private Henry Tandey was the highest-decorated private in the British Army to survive World War I.
During a battle near a French village on the 28th of September 1918, Tandey had a wounded and unarmed German soldier in his sights. Although he had his gun pointed right at him, Tandey chose not to pull the trigger. Lowering his gun, Tandey met the eyes of the wounded German, who nodded once in thanks before scampering off.
It has long been alleged that the injured soldier was none other than 29-year-old Adolf Hitler. The question remains: if Private Tandey had taken that shot, would WW2 have been averted and thus millions of lives saved?
The idea that the single pull of a trigger by a lone British soldier could so drastically have altered future world events is fascinating. Hitler himself later claimed the story to be true. But in recent decades, new evidence suggests that the story is perhaps infused with a little more legend than previously believed.

What's your take? Do you reckon there's any truth to this story?

I think the war would have happened regardless. It wasn't all about Hitler.

TO me it's Hitler's excuse to want peace with UK to fight in the East plus threw King relations proves we are Arian to do so 🤔

My theory is that a soldier did indeed spare Hitler during Ww1. But there's no proof that the soldier is Henry Tandey

This meshes with tolstoys theory that a random act in a battle can be more significant historically than a generals order.

Hitler all by himself coming towards the enemy sounds like desertion, but he was a messenger during the war, and was just passing through!?

So he says this to Chamberlin? Herr Hitler was trying everything to get Chamberlin to buy his story that there'd be "peace in our time", right? Otherwise it doesn't mesh with the ego we know Hitler had.

is it possible that the one scene in the hobbit the battle of the five armies where bard spared alfrid lickspittle mirrors the British solider sparing hitler

What men like Tandy did is so hard for us to grasp but it shows up the self centred, ignorant and cowardly attitude of the youth of today in the UK who say they would not fight for ""the government " even if we were in the position Ukraine is.

There's a big difference between fighting for one's government and fighting for one's country.

Hitler himself talked about it when he saw a painting of Tandy and he ordered a copy of the painting
