I am an Olympian and I have competed in the Olympic games, and I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt. 99.999%, of these people have no idea of the mental and physical sacrifices that she had to go through and has to go through in order to be in the space on planet Earth that she's in. nor will they ever come close. even in imagination of what it is to be where she stands. underachievers will always hate and dream of what it is to be like this Superstar.
My son was a promising high school basketball player. During a practice, my son, while fighting for a ball with another player a few inches shorter than he was, was hit in the chin with a short sharp elbow. The elbow,slammed into his chin at a spot, with a velocity, that unfortunately knocked him out. He fell backwards, unconscious, all 6'6 of him. Hitting the floor, his brain slammed violently back and forth, inside his skull as the skull did not fracture (a contre coup head injury). Without a fracture to release some of the pressure, severe damage occured as his swelling brain pressed against his skull. As he was unconscious, he could make no attempt to break his fall. He hit the ground rapidly, dead weight. He was rushed to the hospital, where he remained in a coma for several days. The nerves in his ear were shattered leaving him deaf, he has seizures, no sense of smell and cognitive issues. He is permanently disabled. Prosecutors experience this when someone is hit with a fist in just the wrong spot. They call them "one punch homicides". This happened with kids playing basketball, not bigger, more mature, strong grown adult men. We learned the hard way that basketball is indeed a full contact sport. I'm not comparing it with gymnastics, except to say, it IS dangerous as well. The attending neurologists in my son's case said he received the identical injury they see in high speed auto accidents. Sports are inherently exciting and dangerous. Congrats to Simone for putting her safety ahead of a medal that day! Btw, my son now plays basketball on a Special Olympics basketball team. He won the gold medal at the Special Olympics Summer Games 2024. Like Simone, he loves his sport.
Okay. I didn't speak clearly on what I meant. I know that basketball can be very dangerous. As can any other fast paced team sport involving a lot of people. But the danger in those sports comes from the presence and unpredictability of other people. A basketball player can suffer a severe injury no matter how aware and focused they are because of all the other people. Likewise, if he or she is unfocused they're just as likely to simply have a bad game. A gymnast competing in an unfocused state when they're having trouble with awareness is almost guaranteed to suffer a severe injury. And, honestly, if any athlete in any sport decides to sit one out or even quit all together because they've decided they're health is more important than the competition, then I, for one, would applaud the decision. Your health IS more important than the game. In my opinion.

Simone Biles showed true self-awareness. She faced a choice to continue performing when her "Twisties" could lead to a serious accident. An accident causing serious injuries, or permanent disabilities, or even death. So she chose staying healthy. As we have seen Simone Biles recovered and has returned to competition winning gold.
I am not a Simone Biles fan but I am 100% with her on her decision her safety is ultimately up to her and nobody else sport can be dangerous and it is up to the athlete to make the decision. Simone made the right call.
I do not envy Charlie Kirk for the backlash he’s about to receive. And JD Vance is wearing more eyeliner than Simone Biles. It’s easy to separate the heroes from the zeros.

I am an Olympian and I have competed in the Olympic games, and I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt. 99.999%, of these people have no idea of the mental and physical sacrifices that she had to go through and has to go through in order to be in the space on planet Earth that she's in. nor will they ever come close. even in imagination of what it is to be where she stands. underachievers will always hate and dream of what it is to be like this Superstar.

My son was a promising high school basketball player. During a practice, my son, while fighting for a ball with another player a few inches shorter than he was, was hit in the chin with a short sharp elbow. The elbow,slammed into his chin at a spot, with a velocity, that unfortunately knocked him out. He fell backwards, unconscious, all 6'6 of him.
Hitting the floor, his brain slammed violently back and forth, inside his skull as the skull did not fracture (a contre coup head injury). Without a fracture to release some of the pressure, severe damage occured as his swelling brain pressed against his skull. As he was unconscious, he could make no attempt to break his fall. He hit the ground rapidly, dead weight.
He was rushed to the hospital, where he remained in a coma for several days. The nerves in his ear were shattered leaving him deaf, he has seizures, no sense of smell and cognitive issues. He is permanently disabled. Prosecutors experience this when someone is hit with a fist in just the wrong spot. They call them "one punch homicides".
This happened with kids playing basketball, not bigger, more mature, strong grown adult men. We learned the hard way that basketball is indeed a full contact sport. I'm not comparing it with gymnastics, except to say, it IS dangerous as well. The attending neurologists in my son's case said he received the identical injury they see in high speed auto accidents. Sports are inherently exciting and dangerous. Congrats to Simone for putting her safety ahead of a medal that day!
Btw, my son now plays basketball on a Special Olympics basketball team. He won the gold medal at the Special Olympics Summer Games 2024. Like Simone, he loves his sport.
Okay. I didn't speak clearly on what I meant. I know that basketball can be very dangerous. As can any other fast paced team sport involving a lot of people.
But the danger in those sports comes from the presence and unpredictability of other people. A basketball player can suffer a severe injury no matter how aware and focused they are because of all the other people. Likewise, if he or she is unfocused they're just as likely to simply have a bad game.
A gymnast competing in an unfocused state when they're having trouble with awareness is almost guaranteed to suffer a severe injury.
And, honestly, if any athlete in any sport decides to sit one out or even quit all together because they've decided they're health is more important than the competition, then I, for one, would applaud the decision. Your health IS more important than the game. In my opinion.

I admire Simon Biles so much! How does anyone dare criticize her??? I admire her for having the guts to drop out appropriately, in spite of pressures to do otherwise. Her performance in the Paris Olympics demonstrates that she forfeited Tokyo out of strength and wisdom, not out of lack of skill or lack of bravery. When she dropped out in Tokyo, she saved her life, gave her team the best opportunity to medal, and lived to make America proud in Paris.
The first time to go to the Olympics is amazing. The second time is "more of the same".
