Thank you! I'm a fiddle player, just getting started learning flute (got one 5 days ago!) and I've found several of your videos to be super helpful. I can finally, now, after a few days, get through a scale without going phhhhffffffhfhhhhhhh!
Thank you! This is exactly what I've been wondering. I can't afford lessons or a nice instrument with being a new father and expecting another and all, so I've been staring at a cheap, second hand flute for 2 months wondering where to start.
This is exactly what I was needing.
Thank you
Good advices. Thanks
Great stuff. Thanks for posting these types of videos. They are appreciated.
Thank you for those tips
Thank you for those *lips
Some tips on octave jumps would save my life!
My silver flute teacher gave me a nice trick for octave jumps, you have to aim the air higher on the embouchure and looking up with your eyes tricks your brain into doing it.
Good advice! I needed this about 8 months ago when I first started trying to learn to play the Irish flute. Any practice routines would be appreciated. I practice octave jumps (up) and octave drops (down). I have problems sometime with playing two notes in a row with a wide range between them such as 2nd Octave D to 2nd Octave B or C#. So I will sometime practice each day 10-15 minutes just playing those jumps. I've love to hear if you have any other suggestions for practice.
I'm having trouble covering the holes on the left hand I have small fingers and keep getting cramp 😮 I play the whistle usually but have had a flute for years and can't seem to cover the holes properly 🤔🥰
What a good quality flute for a beginner that you’d recommend? Not the cheapest in quality, but nothing to break the bank either.
Delrin MccNeela flute is pretty good.
thanks for this video. do you do anything differently when hitting the low D ? I def see what you are saying about it being the toughest. I can create a nice clear sound for all other notes but the D comes out very airy and with little volume. I also was wondering, is it common for light headedness to be a problem to overcome when first starting ? i find that everytime i play i end up feeling very light headed, i come from a trumpet background and just started playing the flute, so i dont know if its because im just used to the resistance of the trumpet and therefore used to using a lot more air or if my embrochure is too large ? i tried the headpiece tip you mentioned at the start of the video and can pretty consistently pick it up and find that sweet spot, but i think the main hurdle i am finding right now is using air correctly/efficiently. not sure if you have any tips or thoughts on that. been trying to learn some tunes but just find that i often have to stop as i feel as if im going to faint haha.
Ideally your breath used while playing the flute would be about the same as if you were singing the tune - so definitely not so much that you're gonna pass out! As for the low D, best thing I can say is spend some time with it and experiment with all the different tone possibilities that you can get out of it.
@@whistletutor will do, thank you for the tips.
Hey Sean! Amazing helpful stuff as usual, thank you! Probably a bit off topic, but will you guys (Wendell/The Sternwheelers) be releasing "It ain't been our year" and other songs performed at the Tuneden that aren't out yet? Really love your sound and energy 🎶💚
Aww thanks so much! Yeah we put that one and a few others down in the studio a while back, heading back on Wednesday to knock some more out. Hoping it's all ready by St. Patrick's Day this year, we've been moving at a glacial pace :)
@@whistletutor Haha glacial pace is still a pace! Will keep an ear out for these 💚
What's your opinion on the MCNEELA Setanta Soprano Whistle - High D.
Is it good, or which whistle is the best to get in your opinion, within sort of the $150 or less area?
I've never tried the Setanta though I've talked with a few folks who have them and love them - I'm a big fan of Gary Humphrey's whistles (link in description).
