Hot take: Pats didn't plan for Bill to leave when he did. They were surprised that Vrabel was available last year, and wanted him then but were locked in contractually to Mayo. So they told Vrabel sit tight, and gave Mayo his year. Meanwhile, Vrabel spent the year twiddling his thumbs as an "advisor" ("advisor"!?!?) when he clearly could've gotten an HC gig anywhere he wanted with an opening. That's also why the Pats never spent any money and went the whole year with mountains of cap-space: cuz they knew Vrabel would be coming in next year, and they wanted to let him use the money and new cap-room to build out the team, rather than giving it all up on a throw-away year. This was the plan all along!
geez... It was clear they moved on from Bill sooner than they expected...but I think you are onto something here. I really hope this is not the case because that is a very sideways thing to do to Jerod. Personally though, I think it was a poor, "flat" attitude that led to his demise in NE. The "rakes" Tom mentions Mayo stepped on were very consequential.
except mayo had a buyout if they didn't promote him. they were not locked in. that buyout was likely much less than what they are paying him after being fired. I think they thought he would grow into the job but as the yr went on he didn't show it. And RKK had a personal friendship and commitment to him
Jerod Mayo played into his role as the Sacrificial Lamb Beautifully I guess? I’m not disconnected with reality here, I know the Patriots have a Bottom 2 Roster in the league, and they’re not 2. But everything from Blowing the #1 overall pick back to the Pre-season overstatements of the “new culture”, the “willingness to spend big”, the in game decision making including even fucking up picking to go with the wind. Drake Maye had the second best season at QB of any of these rookies and they still were a 3 win team before the Bills let them get a 4th to end the year.
The question that should be asked is...Why was Mayo, who had only coached LBs for 5 seasons, be handed the reigns of an NFL team!??! He played in NE for years and then only coached in NE for 5 seasons...he could not even fill out "his" coaching staff because he had no relationships outside of NE!!!! Eliot Wolf had to fill out the entire offensive staff for Mayo because he could not do it himself! I feel bad for Mayo because he should have never been put in that situation. That's Robert Kraft's fault and he owed it to the team and the fans to correct the mistake.
I can’t believe anyone really expected Mayo to win 7-9 games. They really thought there wouldn’t be a rough transition from Bill, who’s been coaching for 50yrs and head coach for 30yrs, to Mayo who’s been a positions coach for maybe 5yrs. Kraft may have ruined or seriously set back mayos career
@@kfw9257 it doesn’t have to intentional for the foundation to be terrible. As in; if you’re building a house and realize the foundation isn’t going to work, you would bother continuing. Mayo is like the rookie contractor they hired to fix it but had no idea how

Come on, man. Almost every new coach gets a terrible roster. Otherwise they wouldn’t have gotten the opportunity to coach in the first place. Mayo got five freaking years to prepare for this and a franchise QB in his rookie deal. All he had to do to keep his job was show any semblance of progress. Instead he showed rapid deterioration, player anarchy, absolute failure to communicate both with his players, coaches, and the media. Hell, the Krafts would’ve kept him if he didn’t absolutely suck after the buy. He only had to be terrible but a bit competitive. The Big Question: "Then what caused the Kraft family to lose the patience required to ... allow Jarod Mayo to learn on the job?" They underestimated the job. Instead they could have brought in a former head coach to mentor Mayo. Someone like Bruce Ariens as an assistant.
I don’t think he failed. He had exactly the season we expect a rebuilding team with a rookie quarterback to have. The Patriots decided to get rid of him because Mike Vrabel was available.
Mayo knew for 5years he wanted to be a NFL Head Coach. He also knew 3 years ago he was the next Patriots head Coach. During this time he didn't assemble his own possible staff & coaches. Mayo did nothing for the last 5 years to prepare for his NFL Head Coaching Career. Mayo has no clue!
I would start with Tom Curran and all the other talking heads from Boston. These guys are the worst and they’re so negative. I hate listening to these guys.
Rough deal for Mayo. He jumped into a bad situation. But he should have known he needed a LOT more experience. He wouldn’t have been the first coaching candidate to say “no thanks, it’s not the right time or place”.
How about not playing cards with your players on the plane ride back from Arizona just whipping your butt. Most good coaches are studying film, it's like anything, you have to put in the work. Mayo isn't ready to be a head coach yet

A lot actually. Mayo wasn’t ready to start with. They were just locked in cause of his contract n had no way out. I doubt even he felt he was ready for the job.
Since the 2000 season in the NFL...19 coaches have been fired after 1 year as a Head Coach. If you're looking at statistics... 12 were White HCs, and 7 were Black HCs. Almost 1 per season. Mayo had a terrible roster and supporting staff. However, he was woefully unprepared, and had zero experience as a HC, or coordinator. He had never been either! His team was SO unprepared to play a game on numerous occasions. It was never about wins and losses this year. It was about culture and weekly improvement. He accomplished none of that!
@ thanks for doing the research. So that averages out to be less than one a year so it really isn’t common. I don’t doubt he was overwhelmed but even BB said he was smart and a great player. Even if it was the right move, I think Kraft hung him out to dry.
@DJ-bj8ku Kraft definitely deserves all the blame for his hiring...and hanging him out to dry! No question. I just think he wasn't ready due to all those circumstances, and Mayos lack of experience! This team didn't need a Coach...it needed a Dictator. 😂
Yes. He was horribly incompetent at every single possible aspect of his job, and couldn't possibly have improved enough to justify keeping him for another year.
