    From Wikipedia
For the 1985 model year, Pontiac re-used the Grand Am name for a new compact car to replace the aging and unpopular Phoenix (based on GM's X Body) using the new-for-1985 N Body. The Grand Am shared the same front-wheel drive platform as the Buick Somerset (renamed Skylark in 1987) and the Oldsmobile Calais. Initially, the Grand Am was available in base or plusher LE trim in coupes only. The 2.5L Tech IV was standard, while a 3.0L Buick V6 was optional. In 1986, a sedan and sportier SE trim were added. The SE trim had the V6 engine standard, lower body cladding, composite headlamps, a slightly revised interior with different cloth used on all seats and door panel inserts, full instrumentation, and came standard with 14" aluminum wheels.
The standard 1988 Pontiac Grand Am dash.
The base model was dropped after this model year.
A totally new front and rear fascia along with an interior redesign made news for 1989. The 2.5 gained balance shafts and an increase of power. The 2.3L 'LD2' Quad 4 replaced the 2.0L Turbo engine as standard equipment in the SE midway through the year. This was the final year that the 'Sport Bucket' seats were available to SE's.
The 2.3L 'LG0' Quad 4 was announced as being available late in the model year on Grand Am SE's; in fact this was a limited run car, of which only 200 were built. All 1989 2.3L 'LGO' Quad 4 Grand Am's were red on grey coupes, with standard appointments including (but not limited to) 16" machined face wheels. The 16" wheels were only optional to SE's.
This would be the first year that the Grand Am could be ordered with either 16" wheels, or a factory installed CD player.
    Changes were minor for 1990 and 1991;
For 1990, a new High-Output version of the Quad 4 (mated to only a 5-speed manual) became the standard engine for the SE (opting for the automatic transmission changed the engine to the 2.3L 'LD2' Quad 4). The 16" wheels moved from the option list to standard equipment for the SE's this year. The LE gained a 'Sport Performance Package' (RPO: W32) late in the 1990 model year run. The W32 option included SE ground effects (minus wheel well flares), the same standard (as well as optional) "SE" drive train, 14" aluminum wheels, a larger front larger sway bar and a rear swaybar that were only otherwise available on the SE model.
For the most part, the final year of this body style was essentially a carry over year. The only changes were the addition of an Anti-lock Brakes System (ABS) as standard equipment for all Grand Am SE's (not available to LE's), and all 1991 model year cars received a redesigned "short throw" shifter (if opted with a five-speed transmission).
The Grand Am was redesigned for 1992.

I had one as a teenager and loved it. 2 door and fully loaded. It was made like a tank and my AC worked.

I had pretty much the same car. In 1996 someone fishtailed out of control on a road with slick ice and snow after a storm, and it was totaled.

I have the same one, but with the silver '3' spoke rims instead of the white. The motor is bad, but it came with three so I'm in the process of restoring it. The interior is immaculate and the exterior has a little rust, but nothing major, just near the wheel wells. Love, love, love this car.

    aaah sweet!!!
I'm 15, soon turning 16, and this car is just standing in my backyard!
Next to it stands a Pontiac Fiero GT 1991, wich will be my first car (have to restorate it).
When I'm done with that, my next project will be this car you just showed!
Only mine has a manual transmission, instead of automatic transmission.

I had a 89 LE but ordered with some package that gave it GT taillights and front for lights. Iron Duke for power, can't forget the switch on the door to activate all the speakers.

I swear these cars were the best sporty cars from the latest 80’s early 90’s. When yes, they were dependable, reliable and very compact and fun to drive. I remember my 88 , that car was the best I used to had. When it used to take me to places with a good gas mileage.

I had a 87 Blue coupe with the iron duke engine. Fun to drive. Loved that car. There was a White one with th ground effect in my neighbor hood. Real sharp. Always want to buy one to play with. The iron Duke travels on the freeway real good. I got about 31MPG.

Weren't Quad 4's unreliable though? I have a 1990 Olds. Cutlass Supreme, that thing runs SO weird, if any one of these things happen you get a noticeable performance drop with this engine: Humid out, cold out(below 35 degrees), hot out (over 80 degree's), raining out, using A/C(probably common), filling up somewhere like Hess instead of Valero/ Kwik Fill, very odd engine, gets great power though around fall and spring time (:

was an awesome car when new but motor was not reliable neither was the paint. this car must have been garaged and never drove and kept out of sunlight. it's beautiful. these cars was notorious for blowing head gaskets around 50,000-60,000 miles. when driven daily back around 89-91
