Kelly my Hydrangeas have black and mildew on the leaves from all the rain . Should I wait till spring and cut them down to the ground ?
I know I will not get blue flowers next year but that's ok
Hi Agnes, if they are really black and have lots of mildew its a good idea to remove as many of the mildew leaves as you can . Cutting the stems back now will cut off next years flowers if the blooms come in on old wood ( as you brought up ) but if ithas loads of black leaves and mildew then you may have no choice . . i would wait util the plant goes dormant - a few more weeks in the NY NJ area . If you cut too soon , you may trigger a growth spurt right before winter which you do not want to do .
If the leaves only have some black spots then i would just leave them alone . Most of my hydrangea leaves have those spots this time of year which is caused by the wet leaves meeting the cooler temps .
