The Auschwitz complex (whose official name in German is "Konzentrationslager Auschwitz") was made up of various concentration and extermination camps of Nazi Germany in the Polish territories occupied during World War II. It included Auschwitz I -original camp-, Auschwitz II-Birkenau -concentration and extermination camp-, Auschwitz III-Monowitz -work camp for IG Farben- and 45 more satellite camps. Located in Oświęcim, about 43 km west of Krakow, it was the largest extermination center of Nazism, where about one million three hundred thousand people were sent, of whom one million one hundred thousand died, the vast majority being Jewish (90% , one million), although Poles, gypsies, Jehovah's Witnesses, prisoners of war, communists, regime dissidents, etc. must also be counted.2
