  • Another month and another quality Griselda production. But...is it art? Or, perhaps a better question would be...what kind of art is it.

Westside Gunn said that he wanted to get his music back to the basement after pray for paris. For me this album does just that! The samples and the unfinished mixing paint a picture of a dark basement filled with cigar smoke and there's this blues/soul singer on the stage singing and the tables are full of mafia bosses drinking expensive drinks. Might be just me but I really like this album!

It would be really cool if you were to review Ka's Descendant of Cain. I think you'd really enjoy it, one of the best lyricists making music right now in my opinion and certainly one of the most unique ones. The whole album ties the story of Cain to modern day street life, similar to what he's done with Greek mythology, samurais and chess in some of his previous albums. Quite an interesting guy.

@@zkciv194 They are affiliated with each other (and in turn they also probably influence each other), but Ka predates Roc by several years.

This question kinda assumes that art and content are mutually exclusive, and that rap music isn't art. I've seen praise of Ka (the literal best lyricist of all time/my favorite artist) that says that what he makes "is more than rap," or "poetry, not rap." To me, that kind of talk really belittles rap and implies that the genre can't encompass high-concept artistry. But I see what you mean about music being "content," as in just an album you throw on just to listen to, vs. "art," as in a more cohesive, conceptual experience
Very interesting video! Cool to see you so interested in the movement.
Definitely check out any album by Ka because that man is an actual genius

I enjoyed your review. I also enjoy the fact that this is almost in a completely different language for you, so the bars and references that are simple to us, are like heiroglyphics to you. Without the Rosetta Stone.
Pump(shotgun) in the Amiris (high fashion jeans) got me walking all bowlegged ( bc he has a big ass shotgun in skinny jeans he's walking awkwardly) 🤣🤣 I know. I'm late 🤷🏾‍♂️

FGIAG 1 felt rushed, this as well. There were 2 tracks bubbba chuck and one more hit in FGIAG 2 that were released last year, he just added verses from stove god cooks. Even though it seems rushed, its decent stuff considering the amount of music he releases.

Listen to "Meat Grinder" by MF DOOM on Madvilliany. That is what the song "Great Minder" is referencing in the lyrics as well as production style. When I first visited the album that song was not on it and Drive By Love was there instead, and now that song is removed. I'm glad, because it didn't fit well. The skits that you can't tell if he agrees with the message of also appears in his project Hitler Wears Hermes 6, where there was one talking about the Gucci racism drama and a guy who was talking about how he didn't want anyone to tell him what to think and how he was going into Gucci anyway. Flygod is an Awesome God 1 I enjoyed definitely more than this one, it had more of a futuristic production style in a lot of ways. Have you checked out Benny the Butcher's albums? Tana Talk 3 is great, and so is Plugs I Met. He is coming out with a new project soon.

@@professorskye No problem! And the similar skit may have actually been in the first one in this series now that I think of it, I'm not sure. Unfortunately that first one has a really annoying "love" song in there as well. Another thing I wanted to note: while the word "cap" means a lie (or a bullet) in most rap, in chicago drill in particular it can actually be referring to a rapper that died named Capo who was in Chief Keef's Glo Gang. They talk about "capping" but are referring to him and paying homage. Kinda a more particular intricacy. Really enjoy the vids, keep them up!
