I don't get how people say the story telling is bad or the plot is nothing. The game quite clearly lays it out. Caleb has some sort of repressed memory involving a younger kid (maybe little sister called Lily) that clearly traumatised him. The narrator is trying to bury it and lead Caleb away from it. If the player follows the black oil it leads him closer to the memory but with the narrator interfering it won't let Caleb remember properly.
There are moments where the door is banging and a man is screaming "what did you do" through it so as a guess Caleb did something to kill his sister at the water park. The uncomfortable memories in the home indicate that home life wasn't good for them either, especially with the implication that Caleb had to keep something out of the room he and his sister would sleep in.
The game is great story and theme wise and I personally don't find the puzzles too hard but it is a shame people view the game badly for it. The chase scenes dragged the game along as well. The anxiety parts are much more effective than the true horror honestly.
I genuinely didn't see anyone hate on the game until Caseoh shit on it 😭😭

This game honestly does such a good job of recreating what traumatic memories feel like. The tunnel vision, the distinct sounds you remember, areas or people you remember just repeating as if it’s a room you can’t escape, viewing people as monsters coming to get you, the need to keep lights on out of fear, mixed with how the narrator is essentially the brain trying its absolute best to suppress such memories and feelings for the benefit of the person experiencing them. He’s right, none of it is real, because it’s already happened. There’s nothing you can do to change the past, and all you carry now is the memories of what happened. And your brain does interesting, although horrific, but interesting things to attempt to understand and work through what you experience. Even if it over-exaggerates what you remember or it may feel way more intense due to a panic attack. It’s like your brain is jumping between trying to comfort you and torment you all at the same time.

@tebogebo I genuinely think people are trashing this game because everyone has grown far too comfortable playing games that hold your hand every step of the way and tell you exactly what to do. Games like Subliminal force you to use your brain and utilize common sense, having explicit instructions throughout the entire experience would ruin the immersion and some people can’t seem to get that

1:17:50 is the most effective jumpscare in the entire game. No sound besides the flicker of the flashlight, and no movement from the monster, just it being there is enough. This scene reminds you of the opening sequence where you open doors and nothing is there, so you're in this semi-safe mental state where you are exploring and not feeling like something might actually be on the other side of the door, especially because the other one was empty.
It gave Joe a heart attack😭🙏

1:39:52 Earlier in the game after you first ran into the monster there is an image of a mascot 36:09 that looks like that monster with the same big smile. I think the monster is just his fear of that mascot as a kid. Some kids are horrified by those costumes.

@srena124that is one of the most likely ways for her to have died, I still don't fully think it was Caleb's doing but her death most likely was at the waterworks if it wasn't at one of the playplaces, I still have 3 endings left but I don't think the rest will help figure out what's happened with Lily at least no more clear answers until the next episode next year likely

My theory is that the monster was your sister Lily (a name seen in game through exploration) and you killed lily which is why there is the goop and you ultimately end up back in your house. You are going back through your memories and trying to alter them by removing Lily from them entirely and each time you do, the memories corrupt more and more as you are trying to forget.
that's an interesting take, I thought that the monster was more of your guilt after causing her death. My guesses are that it was a car accident (because of Rot ending) in 2016 (because in the hallway leading up to the Erase ending, the garage doors have years on them is missing 2016, indicating trauma) and the game is trying to get over the guilt, and the disposal sequence of the Into The Pit ending shows that it's not effective to attempt to destroy guilt. I'm really confused on the Trip Down Memory Lane ending though.
@tebogebo From the scene where you go down the elevator the first time, and you hear the "What did you do" from the door, you can clearly tell it has something to do with us and our actions, not to mention just further down that hall there is a door that says Lily above it, I believe the monster is actually more of the guilt of the actions. However, I do believe its a representation of Lily and the guilt that is masking her. Just a theory though, might be a bit far fetched but a theory
@tebogebo also as for the Trip Down Memory Lane, I believe its suppose to represent one of their favourite pass times, going to the arcade and playing the games. The scores on the arcade machine were initially Lily's until you take over and out do the score, I dont know the purpose of the scores, I think it was just more of a fun mini game

It's an awesome concept, most of the gameplay is good and really scary, everything involving the monster is just SOOOO ANNOYING. He has terrible chase scenes (trial and error, just like PP), and he seems out of place in a very backrooms-looking game. His jumpscares during the door games are all thats good surrounding him.

I completed the full game, 1.0 with no puzzle fixes going blind into the game, encountered no bugs what so ever and completed puzzles without any frustrations. Case's crashout is valid, but the overblown hate from his viewers that just copy-pasted his feeling about this game is not valid imo

I’m sure you’ve already had LOTS of explanations, but the story centers on Caleb navigating traumatic memories, with the horror elements manifesting as a result of that trauma. The monster represents the embodiment of that trauma as a physical form that appears the closer Caleb gets to the original path he actually took in his memories. For example, if he fills the meter, he’s steering clear of that path, if he continues down the path that lead to trauma that’s when ‘it’ appears

In the into the pit ending there are like 4 other chase scenes which where as difficult as the one in the play place after the fun o meter which made the game really frustrating but luckily you got the best ending to play through
