This is the strop I have been using lately. It gets the edges so sharp, it's not even fair! Great price and just a ridiculous performer: bit.ly/1aXnYQJ
All of the products I use in this video from the stones to the nano plates, CBN sprays AND the scope can be purchased in one place on my own page at Chef Knives to www.chefknivest...
I have honed my own razors and I've had them professionally honed but I was never happy with the results. Then I sent three of my razors to Dr Matt and I must say he does incredible work. He put the nano edge on my TI Spartacus and the razor glided over my face like a butter knife in a way that made me think "is this thing cutting at all?" and then I looked down at the blade and saw that it had mowed down 2 days of beard growth like it was nothing!!! Its a moment that makes you do a double take because your mind can't believe something this smooth could be so sharp. Dr Matt is the real thing, believe it!
This guy is truly knows what he’s doing when it comes to straight razors! I’ve sent him several of mine. They’ve all been returned in superb shape. I especially like that he has objective evidence (images) of his results. He’s the best I’ve run across so far.
Dr. Matt has touched up my Black Star for a third occasion. This is how good his work is, and how satisfied I have been each time. This is superb work and a job done right.
This guy make your razor's edge absolutely perfect. Just got my Dovo back and it shaves amazing. Did a three pass shave with no problems at all. Highly recommend sending your razor to Dr. Matt
I started honing with my 2000 X video microscope and my honing skills greatly improved because you can actually see the honing progression!! Fantastic advice!!!
I had Dr. Matt sharpen 2 of my razors and was amazed at the difference. The shave was so comfortable, no pulling. Just sliding the blade down my face and it cut all the hairs. The nano sharpening was a great investment.
Terrific information! I bought a Gold Dollar from DrMatt...sharpened, stropped and ready to go. I used it tonight for my first straight razor shave. Previously, I'd only used DE razors and shavettes. This one gave me a BBS shave, with only one small nick. The nick was my fault...not paying close attention. I have less irritation than with the shavettes and a very, VERY close shave.
Thank you, DrMatt!
Great guy to do business with. Very helpful and terrific about communication.
Folks, I sent 3 razors that haven't touched a face in over 29 yrs and DrMatt did the Nano on one, Jnat on another and Coticule on the 3rd....the results were just like he says on this vid......absolutley amazing!
Hello Dr Matt, I just received back my Dovo razor that I had sent to you for sharpening. It is outstanding! It is uncompromisingly sharp and shaves close and smooth with a light touch.
I have also initiated the use of your maintenance kit and it is simple and straight forward.
From now on, anything relating to straight razor sharpening, you will be the one I come too. Thanks again.
Just had three razors done by Dr. Matt and he knows his stuff! All of the blades perform better than my previous best. His technique really works! Very stand-up guy, too, so do not hesitate to deal with him! Now I know what a great edge feels like, and I can correlate the feeling to what the edge actually looks like, which is great! Thanks again!
The excitement you have for your work is really inspiring! I am just getting into using straight razors and your videos have been helpful as well as fascinating. Keep it up!
Guys, Dr. Matt is the absolute best at getting the best edge my razor has ever had. I was finally able to completely shave my face for the first time ever with a straight razor. As new as I am to straight razor shaving I had only practiced on the side burns and when I got my razor back with the Nano Glass edge, WOW! Incredible!
Can you show this side by side with a factory DE blade?
I generally use an electric razor, but I use knives a lot. This is a very interesting video thanks. It is great to watch a presentation by someone who is passionate and knowledgable about their subject. Best wishes from New Zealand.
Very cool and very well done. I would like to see a reverse progression on a blade after one shave, two shaves, three shaves. This would show how often a razor needs maintenance. Also could you show one of your prefect edges before and after a few passes on a traditional strap?
I can't even begin to describe how great these edges shave... I just received my razor back from Dr. Matt. Wow. Highly recommended. And you have to see this: Dr. Matt's Straight Razor Maintenance Kit
I have just had my Dovo Black Star re-honed and polished. Once again Dr. Matt did a truly amazing job.
It's just a bit long for my tastes, but once you got to the microscope shots you pulled it together at least for me. I tend to dislike videos that have a long explanation before finally getting into the meat of the topic. I can appreciate your enthusiasm for sharpening. A nice mirrored edge is a beautiful thing to behold, and your edge was just about perfect.
Had my dovo la forme razor professionally sharpened twice. Shaved like a butter knife. No matter how I stropped, diamond sprayed, chromium oxided, it would not get sharp. Sent that and one other razor to dr. Matt and requested the nano finish. Matt found that the blade was twisted, and put a new edge on it. He then proceeded to put the nano finish on it. Wow! It is insanely sharp! That and I got his kit as well. Send your razors! You won't be disappointed!
the 0.050 nano looks really satisfying!
Dr Matt. polished my Dovo Black Star with his Nano Cloth and did a truly superb job. An amazing level of attention to detail. The shave given afterwards is sublime. - Hayden.
very passionate about your craft. Keep at it bro.
Holy Smokes! This is the coolest thing I've seen all day! The edge of the 1/20th micron nano cloth was just gorgeous! Surgeons need this technology. Wow this was cool! Thank you for the video, cheers from Boulder CO.
Excellent Job, Matt! You've fallen even more deeply into the rabbit hole than I hoped!
Repeatable, great observation!
I made this video over a year ago and ironically, instead of further refining the method, I've been playing with coticules. It's like going from an F1 car with fuel injection to a carburated Ford Pinto, and I say that lovingly. It's really a challenge and rewarding to take a rock from the earth and rub a piece of steel on it and get it to shave. I have some ideas for a video on how to obtain great repeatable edges on a coti tho...
Nice to see someone applying scientific principles and demonstrating measurable improvement. Well done.
What a Great Demonstration of Diamond Polishing Technology, simply the Best!
Thanks,
Hector
Thanks Hector. Technically it's not diamond but CBN or cubic boron nitride. Just a touch less hard than diamond but softer edges to the particles therefore leaving a smoother, more comfortable razor edge. Diamond edges have a reputation for being harsh.
Wow even better :) Happy Holidays
LOVE your videos. Glad I watched them before making expensive purchases.
Thank you. This is my first video I ever did nearly 10 years ago. It’s what got the channel going.
@@drmatt357 respect is given where due.
Great value and honesty kept you relevant.
I think you very much for this video. I've seen it years ago, but washing again is like washing it the first time!
COMB0RICO - Thank you. It was my very first shave related video 7 years ago. My style was a bit cringeworthy but it’s come along a bit. 😝
I shouldn't like this video, but I can't help being impressed. Spectacular job! I've been curious about Ken's nano cloth for a while now and you've convinced me it's worth trying. Also, how are you getting photos this nice from the Veho? I got one for Christmas, but my images are nowhere near as good as yours. I'm looking forward to the second video.
Very true sir. On this video, I was very careful to maintain these variables as fixed. The scope, the light intensity, angle of scope, angle of blade and the blade itself were all constant.
I would suggest you do a search for Clay Allison from Wicked edge. He uses this technology on knives and has posted near SEM quality pictures showing the total lack of stria at the edge from the CBN on Nano. Truly remarkable.
I also started to wonder if the touch method was sufficient to confirm the level of edge refinement on straight razors. Now thanks to your passion and diligence there is a objective, and more importantly repeatable method to obtain the finest edge possible.
Have there been any further improvements to your method of straight razor edge refinement since you created this video?
i just bought my first straight razor a solingen this video was very educational
Wow can you hone my dovo and take it all the way down to 0.050? Im new to straight shaving and been watching all your videos i love how you describe the science behind a straight razor
Another great video, very informative in simple language. Well done!!
Val M - Thanks Val. This was my first video I did over 5 years ago. I think they've gotten a little better. 😜
Thanks for the comments. The blade does degrade from this pristine condition with every shave, but not very much. After 3 shaves, you probably still wouldn't see much difference. After 10-12 you would which is another video idea I have and that is "Maintaining the Perfect Straight Razor Edge".
Ideally, after stropping, there would be no difference but if the strop is old and dried and/or has contamination, you'll see small perpendicular lines to the edge.
awesome pic's mate! but how do reach this edge? can you show the way you did it?
greetings from germany, stefan
The CBN in pretty much inert. Because it's in aqueous solution, it doesn't become airborn like a dry powder. Even on the nano cloth, I spritz the plate with water to get a better finished product but this also would minimize any dusting effect.
Great video as always, keep sharing It Im learning a lot thanks to you. Have a nice day bro 😉
Very nice. I have a small microscope like a loupe that magnifies to 60x but those edges you got were incredible.
Nott John - This was my first video I ever did 7 years ago. The scope I have now in my later videos is really amazing! Thanks for stopping by. 😁
This is really great, very nice edge. Your enthusiasm for that mirror edge is really what kept me watching, like a science of microscopic feathering of metal. Would like to see the edge of double edge blades from a new package under magnification. I'm using a magnifying glass when I sharpen my razor and if it shines back at me I think it looks correct.
Amazing, I have two of his paste offerings 3um and 1um and I love the results I can't wait to get the rest of his line
At this point, if I use paste Ron, I will only go to a half micron. Most comfortable for me. Thanks for tuning in. Check out the rest of the channel as I have some really good vids. ;-)
Matt, I found your video interesting, and would like to inform you of a couple of findings of my own when using a microscope to examine the edge.
Firstly, I use a pathologists microscope, with x10, x50, x100, x200, x500 magnifications. I find that the x100 allows sufficient clarity to really compare the results. I honed my first test razor on 1k / 3k / 8k / 20+k, then chromium oxide paddle on glass. I could see a nice progression through the run, however, I then changed the lighting angle......
Wow, amazing. Nine years later, do you still do this to your razors. In other words, is it worth the effort/time, or have you found better alternatives. Thanks for your work and info!
Thanks. I still use it but at this point, I only go to the 0.50 micron spray. Finer than that looks pretty but I don't feel the extra work and expense yields much difference. In fact, the half micron feels better than the finer sprays.
Dr.Matt can you show the progression of all your stones I saw the 4 where you ended with kens spray on your jnat I would love to see you hit it on the nano after wards. By the way I love your pics you do when you walk step by step!
Very genius of you to discover that, I have a microscope but not that powerful. Very helpful of you, thanks for doing this video, I've purchased CBN at 0.1 to follow up after 0.5um diamond film when I'm not using naturals. If anything the edges are too sharp but provides a great shave.
Greetings from Moscow, Russia. This is an amazing video. It would be nice if you had a picture of a feather double edge blade as a comparison benchmark. Also I would like to see a picture of your perfect blade after 1, 3, 5 and 10 shavings and also before and after stropping. Thanks a lot for the info.
This is incredible. What kind of money would one have to spend to get started?
Thank you, ordered some sprays from him. These cbn sprays were buggin my mind for some time. Finally will try.
Do you have a video where you show what you did to get this kind of edge, if so what's it called?
I am very impressed. I ordered the microscope today. I also tracked down the seller of the sprays. Thank you for your time and effort.
Jerry1
i re-honed with stone progression 1k-4k-8k-stroping on a leather with dovo diamond paste and passing HHT ,shave well for me, BUT not agressive sharpnes like gillete ,shavete etc. your opinion? That top of the edge i rehoned more agressively on stone 1k to set better bevel and it ok for now but before every shave need strping its a carbon steel -harder to maintence
Do you know where I can get all the stones and strops in one bundle. I have had my straight razor for a year now. Had it sharpen by a professional and he told me to watch your videos.
Those are great magnifiers, what was your finish stone on that first one? Also, I found it impossible to load the programming on my Windows10.
cont......
I found that as I altered the light source and angle, the resulting striations came and went due to a cross-lighting effect. This is more pronounced with shallow lighting angles. What I have learnt to do is use a ring light (mainly used in microscopy), with low power setting, and I use this as a standard for all honing comparisons. My results.....well, there is progression, but even when using CBN 0.05, I cannot get a truly mirror finish like the one you show. Foof for thought perhaps
Outstanding research and findings. I would love to see a list of your materials and locations where I could acquire them so I could create my own sharpening outfit. Great video!
Hey Dr. Matt Cool video, being a bit of an edge nut myself, I find this very interesting, but I also have a few questions:
About how long does it take to get from the CO (chromium oxide) to the .050 micron edge?
How noticeable when shaving was the difference in comfort/ease of shaving between the CO and the .050 poly?
And Finally how much did the nano-cloth progression set cost in the end?
I am curious, because I'm considering purchasing the nano-cloth/glass/spray to perform the honing/polishing myself, and I'm sure some other viewers are curious as well. I appreciate your thoroughness, and dedication to "the perfect edge", as well as your time spent reading this if you so choose!
It takes about 10 minutes to do all 3 nano cloth steps. The difference between CROX and the CBN/Poly is significant provided the razor is of good quality steel to hold such a fine edge and of course it was honed properly to that point.
The cost I believe is around $60 per level. There is a Part 2 to this video where I go through the process.
This was amazing. Would it be too much of a bother for you to list your progression? I'm looking to purchase what I need to take a dull unhoned edge to the edge you show here. I need a clear understanding of the investment I'll need to make to keep a friend of mine in nice sharp straight razors. Thank you for your hard work of showing the proof of your experiment.
These are eyeopeners for sure. Great video!!!
I would be very interesting to see the comparison between these blades and the DE blades. Sharks, Feathers, Persona, etc.
Thanks
That is so interesting!!! How can I buy them products
Been using Ken Swartz 's 0.25 CBN on both balsa & different paper surfaces mounted on glass for almost a decade now, also use ultra fine sub micron PSA lapping sheets mounted on glass as well as using a Microscope for verification, welcome to the club, 🤣😉
but seriously I'd really love to get a second hand TI Razor from you that you have already put through your own Straight Razor rejuvenating treatments, rather than a new one, is there any chance of that, and if so how much would it cost ?
Hi, just saw the video because just getting into the shaving "thing" myself. LOVED watching the video. I'm totally into the blade thing the last couple of months. I'm like you, just watching that blade change. My wife says I get into it to much (but as a side, she is now into it and using brushes to do her legs and loves it) but now we both like it a lot for different reasons. Question, it's so expensive for the stones and the like (at the moment with bills and now two kids about to go to college OH BOY I'M SWEATING (BUT I DIGRESS)
how can I get a inexpensive, cheap, straight razor and stones and keep the razor-sharp. Plus, I really want to get into the whole making of wind understanding of straight razors and even safety razors.
Well, thanks for that (for lack of a better word) "geeky" video.
Thanks
James
Joanne Castanza glad you're enjoying the journey. Check my channel for the video, "maintaing your razor on the cheap" or something like that. That will get you the stones and technique. For an inexpensive razor, go with a Gold Dollar. Check here: www.etsy.com/shop/STRIKEGOLDSHAVE
Great information, Matt! I wanna go from a raw edge to a perfect (as much as possible!) edge on straight razors I buy. Can you provide a list of everything...stones, grits, balsa, glass, vendors (if you don't sell it yourself) that someone would need to hone their own razors to this level?
is it true that edge need honing least one in two monts how do u explain that...right time for honing?
Kevin,
I just added the link in the description section.
Thanks for the interest.
great video, just picked up some balsa wood and chromium oxide to add to my tools.
How often do you recommend using the balsa wood? I hear a lot of different opinions...every day..once a week..only when the leather strop does not do the trick. Any advice? Thanks again!
All of those opinions can be correct Dimitri. I suggest using the CROX board when you notice the edge start to drop off. That's usually 4-6 shaves. I've done it after every shave so it never has a chance to fade. No carved in stone answer. Whatever suits you best. You really can't over due it so no worries there.
Very interesting. Thanks for the video.
Great video! Could you please spell the name of the magnifier? I tried zooming in on it in the video and I can't make it out. Thanks!
Thanks Paul. It’s a Veho 400 Paul but don’t get it. I’m testing other scopes for less money and will have a video out on it so stay tuned. !
@@drmatt357 thanks for the quick reply! Really enjoy your videos. Just in the learning phase now but will acquire some equipment soon. Been SR shaving for about 4 years now, just tired of sending them out for honing when I think I can do a decent job myself. Glad there are guys like you around. Keep up the good work!
Wow, sent my straight razor to get this treatment and it's better than new! I really need to get this nano cloth. Once you have well sharpened tools, you cant go back to shitty blades...
Thanks again Matt!
When you say "top" I gather you're talking about the toe or most distal end of the razor. My question is, how did just that end get dull. This could be caused from a few things but one could be the bevel was never set correctly. If that's the case, it needs to go to a set of stones to start from the beginning. Have you tried stropping it more aggressively on just the part that's dull?
Where do I find this micro cloth and the spray?
Quality of blade definitely makes a huge difference. On the new blades, $100 will just get you in the door. Have you tried ebay for some of the vintage ones? You can get really good ones in the $25 dollar range.
Amazing result, I think I ve done simmilar with watchmaker’s aluminium oxide but won’t this edge be spoiled after first shave?
It certainly won't look as pretty after a single use but functionally, it lasts a while.
Very impressive!
..and a great presentation!!
i have dovo straight razor which is in nice shape but top of the edge is little blunt compare to other spots of the edge, how can resharpen only top of the edge
this is such a cool video. talk about a great shave! thanks
how much for the whole set of sprays and cloth?
Hey Dr. Matt I'm wondering with the Nano cloth and the spray does each spray have to have it's own cloth and glass
Where can I get these items. I just ordered a straight razor
From the microscope pictures, it appears that you have been able to achieve about as perfect an edge as can currently be produced. Does that translate into an equally perfect shave, or is there a point of diminishing returns at some point?
Chris Powell Good question Chris. It's really a matter of preference. Natural stone edges have their own personality and some prefer them, others this hyper sharp scalpel type edge. No right or wrong.
thanks for your response. I have really enjoyed your videos. Glad I found your channel.
ill have to keep a lookout for those videos. Do you know a guy named Jerry Starks off the top of your head without looking him up? I recently just ordered two types of straight razor. i got a classic Imperial and a Kamasori coming in and i really need to make sure myself that its shave ready. and that the Geometry of the Razor is just right for tip to heal. so once i get them in then in person ill really be able to see what im working with. in the mean time im still nee to straight razor honing so ill need to build a rhythm to get these blades sharp.
John Smith - That was too easy! ruclips.net/video/ptgZqXr57BQ/видео.html
DrMatt357 ha i was looking at his razors of course im new to straight razors and he sent me to your channel after emailing him. i was hoping that i could meet with him since im in Arizona too.
Great video. I wonder at what point a super fine smooth polished edge becomes a negative.
I can only imagine the stickyness and drag... so to speak between two so different surfursess .
I remember the days in the car seen a port and polished heads, but these days it is known such a smooth polished chamber head created more disruptions with air flow from such a smooth surface.. probably like underbelly of a dolphin or a whale through water, makes it all easier to cut through surface differentials ..
I hope you understanding my point... 😇
Im not say this is end point of course for an edge, but im sure there would be one.
Wish you did a hanging hair test with that 0.005 edge, that or a shave in vid would of been awesome!
Thanks for great video ...
Thanks Gazz. The edge would destroy an HHT! But honestly, it's already probably too far for a razor's edge. It's at or approaching a DE blade which are sharp but a bit too sharp as they can leave a funny feeling on the skin.
This was my first video I did a long time ago. At this point, I use mostly natural stone edges as they don't look as pretty under magnification but they feel better on my skin.
How long did it take you to restore that old razor from eBay?
Hey Dr. Matt is a separate piece of nano cloth and glass needed for each step of the micro spray
Thanks a ton
hey Matt, how do i send you some of my razors for sharoing. i am new to this hobby. i am pretty good with chef knives but strait razors no so good. i would love your pure smooth edge to start out. i have invested quite a bit of money on stones..now after your video on these sprays and glass nano cloths..just crazy..lol..please help.thank you paul

Feel free to email me anytime Paul. drmatt357@hotmail.com
Thanks Matt!
Where can I get those sprays and cloth?
Amazing !!thanks for sharing !
Thank you! Cheers!
I finish on a 12k naniwa and a smooth leather strop. Do i need any further steps to it or is it good enough? I am playing around with the thought of getting a 30k grit shapton, but they arent cheap...
Not really any need for further refinement especially if it's the Super Stone. Don't waste your money on the 30K Shapton. They are in the 3-$400 dollar range and the 12K SS gives a better edge. If you want to go further, get a piece of leather and put some chromium oxide or even better, .50 micron CBN emulsion.
@@drmatt357 thanks for your quick reply! I would have never guessed that. It would be interesting to see your take on a budget edge using stones.
Michael Schwarz - Right here Brother! ruclips.net/video/cXVW_S6VaBw/видео.html
Is this ILR better than the naniwa 12k and what excactly makes it better if so?
Learning so much.
The sprays are around $30 for an ounce. One ounce should last you a long, long time. The plates I had are 3X11 and cost $40 each but that was kind of special order. His usual size is 3X8 which are $30. He also mounts the Nano to 1X6 aluminum (I don't know what those cost). I prefer the larger size just because it makes it faster with all that real estate.
Hello! I am a beginer in straight razor restoration. Here is Europe we often use 3 stones to finish the edge (Trio Gallois). the ultimate one is around 15-18 kgrits. Do you think the nano stuff does better?
Florian Lachaise - 15-18k grits are fine. If you want sharper, then the nano can help. But these days I mostly use natural stones which are in the grit range you mention so I think you’re in good shape.
@@drmatt357 Thanks a lot! Have a pleasant day!
Do you still use leather? 'i was wondering if
i needed to buy a leather strop or will the nano cloth with .025 be good enough? I am new to straight razors, so I wondering what sharpening tools I will need to keep my razor sharp?
I have found that the leather is does not work for me, it misaligns my perfect edge after it is perfect from the glass nano cloth
At least on normal strops, I do like to use the kangaroo leather on glass, but only if it is kept clean and undamaged
But really no need at all
i would love to know where you got the cloth and .05 micron spray.
DR Matt, what is your opinion/ experience on using the “Jende Nanocloth Ultra Strop” and their diamond spray? I would like to try this technique.
They have good stuff. I would use their CBN instead of the diamond.
@@drmatt357 looks like Jende may be discontinuing the CBN. Jende and three other retailers didn’t have the full line in stock. Does CBN have a softer scratch pattern than diamond?
@@american1911 - yes, smoother more comfortable. It's on my Chef Knives To Go webpage. They have the half micron emulsion. Just have a dedicated piece of leather to apply it to. www.chefknivestogo.com/ckcbnsp05mi.html
Amazing, mirror edge 😳 !
Thank you! Cheers!
What power Microscope is Recommended for straight razors ?
Havent got one yet... I have commented on this video before, Lol
So how do you change an adjust magnification? Wish you would do a how to set up and use these usb scopes..
On this scope or most of the cheapies like it Michael, you can either do full magnification OR minimum. It won't go all areas in-between. So you crank the magnification all the way one way or all the way the other. That's it.
@@drmatt357 i guess the most important part is a sturdy stand, because when you have to lower the scope to get within working distance..
A man probably need a stand that has the twist knobs and does not vibrate or move..
Something like this:

Why is 'Part 2' being blocked? I just subscribed after watching this, then tried watching the other and get copyright blocked content message?
Hey Matt, do you know if I'll be able to get a good view of the edge with a compound microscope like the ones used in biology class? Particularly, I want to be able to see if my bevel is going all the way to the edge.
genericwhitemale - Yes you will be able to use one. If you want to simply see if you’re getting to the edge, a hand held loupe will tell you that.
drmatt357 what do I look for? I have a 60x loupe but i still can't tell if I'm reaching the apex which is why I'm considering a microscope.
genericwhitemale - The scratch lines should go all the way to the edge. Try using a Sharpe marker on the edge, then take a few swipes on the stone. The marker should be totally gone. Look with the loupe. If there’s any black remaining, the loupe will show it. I suspect if you can’t see much difference, then you’re probably there.
Chip Chiperson got a hold of your blade, tsssssssk tssssssssk!
