One can see how the White Star Line emphasized comfort over speed. The interiors look very comfortable. Unusual paneling in some of the cabins. I noticed one of the cabin photos looked like it was from the 20's. I know of the other Big 4 was converted to a Cabin liner and I'm guess that was done also with the Baltic. John Maxtone-Graham who has written many book and articles about ocean liners wrote in an article about how his uncle's favorite liner was the Baltic.
Always nice to see one of the "Big Four" chronicled with lots of good quality photos. The smoke room at 1:02 actually shows the Adriatic. On the Baltic it was much plainer and did not have the backlit stained glass windows. How peculiar that White Star would re-use the exact same motif in the smoke rooms of the Olympic and Titanic for the paneling around the aft funnel casing. One would think that several years after the Adriatic they'd try something different. But perhaps this decorative feature on the Adriatic was such a success with their passengers that White Star decided to repeat it for the Olympic Class ships. It is very distinctive and handsome.
I am more interested in what steerage was like. I just want to know for my own peace of mind that he was treated decently and with more dignity than what could have happened to him if he'd sailed from Europe only two years earlier than his setting sail in 1914 (Titanic.) [Note: My great-grandfather was an Irish laborer from Tourmakeady who had up to that point in his life been working in England. It is chilling to know that the same ship he sailed on two years later was the one that warned Titanic to slow down....and Titanic did not listen. It is also chilling to realize he could have gone down with that ship if he and his brother had saved up their pennies faster!]
Steerage would’ve been given excellent service by the stewards and would’ve been fed hearty meals throughout the duration of the crossing. Their cabins would’ve also been private (but segregated via marriage/gender etc) and comfortable. c:
What is the music you used for this one? Beautiful, as always.
It's the long name listed in the description (composed by Kurt Noack)
