Yes keep the instrument cluster, very 70's, and on the Thursdays you don't have work talk to us about your ideas and what ideas others may have for the build. Great new add with Matt will be fun with more input.
This build is going to be really fun to watch.... ok, spoked wheels for sure, and the stock instrument cluster is cool, but I can see what Matt is talking about, a single round analog speedo would look good.
Look forward to seeing where this project goes. Regarding the cluster, a single, smaller dial would look great, preferably with a digital speedo set inside an analogue rev-counter. Alternatively you guys could compromise and repurpose the stock dials with a new bracket and neater idiot lights.
with 2 blokes it should go twice as fast...right ? regarding the cluster, I am with you Mark. I think they look really good for old school. Then again, I am into old school.
Hi Guys!!!! I reckon that if you really want to get it like a scrambler you are going to have to do something about the suspension, I am sure it will be fine for plain old dirt roads but not sure whether the stock stuff will handle the rougher stuff? I loved the virago build so I am really looking forward to this one!!!!!
I have a red 2005 CB250 Honda in my shed. We bought it so my lady could get her learners licence - great little bike. My old lady now has her full licence and rides a Yamaha V Star 650 cruiser. We will keep the CB250 so our daughter can get her learners as well... We paid $1500 for ours. Cheers
I haven't read all the comments, but the instrument setup looks like my 1976 CB 360 :) also the back brake adjustment is a combination of the back brake pedal and the adjust screw lever on the back brake drum (connection to the brake pedal)
Sounds like it's going to be a great build. Looking forward to it. I agree with Matt on the gauges and exhaust. Something more simple would look much nicer.
Glad you are registering the bike first to save time and bullshit ...I do hope Nay gets this bike. Its good to see a woman on a bike on the road as it promote more participation by women. Cheers....This Budget Bike Build will also be a Comedy Show...
Hey Fellas, I think for the instrument cluster, an idea, try putting a frame around it, use just scrap metal and fab-up a cage/frame thing, like a jail cell door from the bush rangers days old west kind of thing. In my head it looks like crash bars but much smaller around the outside both gauges.
What size rims are they? I will have a look at work and see if there are any used tyres in the rack that will get you through a roadworthy. Might be able to find you a couple other goodies to.
ENTERTAIN ME !! I Tottaly agree those fork do not look up to scrambler work. So thin I would be worried they will bend. Yes I would look at the forks and tripples from a bike wrecker a XR 250 or 400. Or even a crf230. It will also Hank a lot of stress or the arms and hand on corrugated roads, that lead to arm pump and rider fatigue
Chris Hart hence why we are saying to swapout the forks and triples. Sadly this week Mark has said that swapping forks for some 2nd dirt bike forks and tripples is above too costly and above his mechanical abilities and back yard tools... Even though he is doing Max's head bearings so it really only possibly too expensive
Really looking forward to this build guys. I agree the exhaust needs to be shifted but if you use a muffler the cones might still work once relocated. Those forks look really weak for a scrambler. You may have to swapthem and the triple clamps out. I think the instrument pannels is find. But either way it's your bike guys enjoy the time building it and then the time riding it.
Keep the instruments they are nice! , and if you are going knobby tires, get rid of the chain guard and go with a black rear sprocket maybe 3 or 5 Tooth bigger for a nicer off-road torque and visuals. Virago was a amazing series, good luck with the new CB project. But Exhausts I agree they have to go away if cost allows it.
Hi, As the CB250 is a road bike and you intend to take it off-road, should you consider a fork brace as the tubes are narrow and fit fork bellows to keep the dirt away from the seals. Not trying to spend your money really.
Hi guys, good luck with the rebuild. When you remove the plastics you will have holes where the plastics were attached. This will give you mounting points. So, rather than modifying the frame use these points to build a shroud which will take the mounting points for the new seat and also cover the portion of the tank you don't like. The instrument cluster can be replaced with a simple cluster setup from something off a WR450 or DRZ400. This will give you room to mount a GPS or phone as part of the new instrument setup.
No cluster, clean simple lines, white tank, tan leather seat and grips, maybe some Black and Tan pinstripes to tie the frame/motor and seat to the tank.
Nice vid guys 😁 also check for movement in rear swing arm bushes and front steering head stem bearings. Be careful modifications after rwc it might upset any future insurance cover policies and also if a knowledgeable cop pulls you up he can slap a canary on it if theres no engineering certified plates if the subby has been cut and welded. Good luck guys an i like the cluster set looks perfect for a old style cafe racer. Take care Mark
Bloody ripper. Great little bike the CB250 just bullet proof bike with so much potential. Cant wait to see the build unfold. I have a CB250RS sitting in the shed for just a build. Great minds yet again Mark! Hanging for next thursday mate! :D
iRidetas really wanted a cb250rs. I had the cb125rs (still got it) it's nothing special though just a cg125 with a ohc really. Went ok though for a 125cc 4 stroke. I liked the way the 250 was almost the power of the twin and a fair bit lighter. I have had 2 xr250's and a xl250 so got a taste of the engine.
As mentioned steering bearing check for notchness , you have done these before on the DR so no biggie.Looks a good clean Bike and a very low price considering its condition. If you removing the plastics you might want to look at different style tail/brake light and indicators. and for the speedo and idiot lights you could look at a vapor unit by Trail Tech a very small unit with everything built in.
This should be a fun build, I think your challenges are going to be a little different from the last build. On one hand this bike is in better shape at the start so that will be a lot less work to clean up etc. But the challenges on this bike I think are going to be in the re styling of the bike and getting it to look right. I don't know, I'm looking forward to seeing the progress.
there should be a brake lining limit mark on the outside of the drum. wheel bearings and fork oil leaks are another things to check are you sure the tyre choices are limited because of the alloys or because of rim size? I just checked, they have 18" wheels front and back. That shouldn't be a problem although finding a narrow 18" could be a bit tricky. durotire.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/DURO_PowerSports_web_Jan18.pdf 3.0" and 4.1" 18" hf333 tyres I think that cluster, without that middle section would be ok. Pretty gopping with it. I can see you wanting to put harder springs on the bike. I can see it being pretty overwhelmed offroad. Although that could be done as and when. Get it running not get it right!
Just googled cb250 and it says it's a honda "nighthawk" 250.....I thought only the 750 was the nighthawk . I would say keep the instruments cluster and save some money for other stuff. look forward to more . Cheers.
I wish somebody would come up with a cheap (sub-$100) but sturdy fork brace for these bikes... Tarozzi makes one for the 1984 CB250N but I can't imagine it fits.
If you get it registered and then make mods to the Frans without an engineers certificate your ( or Nays) insurance will be invalid and they won’t payout if she’s injured.... worth thinking about
Matt's spot on about the instrument cluster. Small single like this: www.ebay.com/itm/0-199km-h-Motorcycle-LCD-Digital-95mm-Odometer-Speedometer-Tachometer-Gauge/391908402697 Oh, and you could hide the odd-looking lower part of the tank with some side luggage like this: blog.baakmotocyclettes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/moto-guzzi-tracker-engine.jpg
I looked at one of these new. Think the cb250n. Or cb250rs were much better bikes this looks more like the cb125t engine bored out. And the different size front/rear wheels it almost should have been called a cm250
= / My 2015 Honda CRF250L doesn't have hazard lights either . /°(-_-)°\ I guess they figure you won't be traveling in hazardous conditions on your trusty steed or something . I think it's moronic to not include them as standard equipment from the factory , as hazardous conditions occur all the time , without warning . = (
MrKdr500 i think there looking for spoked wheels 18 front 18 rear. Like most of the older cb's. I think this has 19 front 16 rear very limited tyre choices. Think duel sport choices for the 19. Cruiser tyres for the 16. Not good sizes
I'm asking in the context of owning one of these. Could you source me a front and rear mag rim ? I will make it worth your time. I pay ALL shipping costs. I can not find anything in the U S A . They are ALL spoked rims. Not that it is a problem, i prefer mags. Any help ????
Sorry mate I just don't have the time! All I can say is search Australian eBay for them and then contact the seller to see if they will ship to America and make it worth there time! :-)
@@BikerBits I understand, but thank you for the response. I know they are out there. The U.S. version really suffers with having only drums front and rear, fine for one quick stop. But they fade pretty quickly at highway speeds, the disk front on the mag rims is a big boost in stopping power. Just thought i would mention i paid $125.00 for the bike. So i can spend a bit on the bike and not feel too bad about it. I will also try UK postings as well, it was popular over there as too. Good luck to you. Hope you guys get some rain really soon those fires are nasty business.
Guys! Love the series so far just watched all of it and cant wait for the next episode. Im building my own cb250. Its even the same colour! Check out my channel if you fancy it (you are a lot further along than me.) I even think we have the same seat! Ep05 is already uploaded, but il be sure to give you a shout out in ep06. Keep it up, and safe riding from the uk 👍
Mark the backyard bubba is back at it again! Love your work mate.
Yipee! A new bike build story...exciting to see you both have a go at this....Will be a hoot!
Yay! A bike build. Perhaps Nay has an opinion on the instrument cluster. Looking forward to the build. Thanks guys.
Mark, the only thing I'd keep is the instrument cluster, it's so CB750, Matt is "Crazy"!
Yes keep the instrument cluster, very 70's, and on the Thursdays you don't have work talk to us about your ideas and what ideas others may have for the build. Great new add with Matt will be fun with more input.
Keep the instrument cluster. Very 70’s. Even the trail bikes of the era had these.
Must have spokes. Will look shit otherwise.
This build is going to be really fun to watch.... ok, spoked wheels for sure, and the stock instrument cluster is cool, but I can see what Matt is talking about, a single round analog speedo would look good.
👍Loving these bike builds.Just watched the virago series.Well done.
G’day guys, I’m from Bendigo too and was looking at getting a CB250, these videos are gonna be perfect for my transformation
Look forward to seeing where this project goes. Regarding the cluster, a single, smaller dial would look great, preferably with a digital speedo set inside an analogue rev-counter. Alternatively you guys could compromise and repurpose the stock dials with a new bracket and neater idiot lights.
You will have the rear wheel apart when you change the tire, you can check the brakes and bearings then...
with 2 blokes it should go twice as fast...right ?
regarding the cluster, I am with you Mark. I think they look really good for old school. Then again, I am into old school.

liking this project already!!

also the back brake adjustment is a combination of the back brake pedal and the adjust screw lever on the back brake drum (connection to the brake pedal)
Yes it's back!
I wanna buy one of these for a commuter bike but they're also good for going on off road with the right tires!
I love the instrument cluster!
Sounds like it's going to be a great build. Looking forward to it. I agree with Matt on the gauges and exhaust. Something more simple would look much nicer.

Mabey the forks from a honda xr 400 will fit . That way you can have the spoke wheel, as well as the better suspension and better front brakes
That 21" front spoked wheel would most likely hit the engine/exhaust
Chris Hart hence why we are saying to swapout the forks and triples. I agree with Matt. The instrument cluster looks like a pair of bug eyes.
Keep the instruments they are nice! , and if you are going knobby tires, get rid of the chain guard and go with a black rear sprocket maybe 3 or 5 Tooth bigger for a nicer off-road torque and visuals. I like the exhaust on the triumph scrambler
Great looking forward to the series. Cheers
I think a white engine with sanded fins (like Lucy) would look great with a white tank but keeping it clean would be a pain.

Surely you need to check steering bearings and swinging arm for RWC?
Gday fellas its going to be a interesting bulid cant wait cheers
As many have said - keep the instrument cluster it's already scrambler cool!
If you guys use a tan seat, accent the bike with a leather gas tank strap and tan Biltwell grips. Oh yeah, and keep the instrument cluster.
I would like to see some decisions made on the flip of a coin
I'm curious to see what tubeless off-road tyres you find to fit those tyre sizes
This one is gonna be fun . Funner and possibly a hoot . Enjoy
P.S. I vote for squat fat rubber .
Just googled cb250 and it says it's a honda "nighthawk" 250.....I thought only the 750 was the nighthawk . I would say keep the instruments cluster and save some money for other stuff.

for those with less tools join the mens shed cant beat it.
I wish somebody would come up with a cheap (sub-$100) but sturdy fork brace for these bikes... Tarozzi makes one for the 1984 CB250N but I can't imagine it fits.
Definitely needs to have fork boots on
Kenda and Shinko both make affordable tires that will fit the build.
We're going to bendigo Morty!
Call it " dont spend to much its only a 250 build "
If you get it registered and then make mods to the Frans without an engineers certificate your ( or Nays) insurance will be invalid and they won’t payout if she’s injured.... worth thinking about
This is unreal. I am building a cafe racer using the same bike.
Love that. I found Johnny cactus' sr250 build while building my own as well. I know exactly the feeling you have right now 😎
Haha I am too, it's hard to make it look pretty though
Import61 love to see how yours is going. Just about done with mine. Got all the parts just need to do some painting and then put all back together
I agree with Matt re the gauges?
What tires did you guys use
Are those factory rims? If not, who makes them? My CB 250 has spoke wheels.
They are Factory ones!
Put this extra cash into getting your house done it would be better .
Your older vids are better Mark cheers .
have you seen dirty sandy?
I vote that you leave the stock cluster and turn up Matt's mic. His audio is not nearly as good as yours. Keep up the good work.
Keep the cluster or ask the wife what she likes.
👍
Its the plastic dash board between the round gauges that look boring as piss
What about camo white paint

I'm here! :)
The bike is too good to destroy ..... Hear me ..... DESTROY! :)
OK .... Your plans seem good .... Off ya go ..... Do your best! (And good luck! :) )
nitromethane + N2O cylinder?

brad b can you even select the parking lights when the ignition is off ? Used to be a position on the key further round
Nope .
Why would "Alloy" or "spoke" rims make a difference for tire availability?.....It's the size of the wheel that's the problem not the type of wheel.
MrKdr500 i think there looking for spoked wheels 18 front 18 rear. Like most of the older cb's. I think this has 19 front 16 rear very limited tyre choices. Think duel sport choices for the 19. Cruiser tyres for the 16. Not good sizes

Damn, fourth.

Numbers 2 and particular 3 are great ... I hope that they give you some ideas Mark .... BTW ... When I closed your post (?) ... There they were! ROFL!
Just watched ur build , great looking bike and even tho its was sped through i understood most of it haha thats a win.
great looking bike your got some mad skills cant wait to see what you build next
