    Can remember watching this race live and my Dad having tears in his eyes when Terry won. Was hoping he'd pull off the win in '05 at Sonoma, leading late in that race. We got to meet Terry at the 2007 Carl Casper Car Show in Louisville. Got a picture with him and signed our 1:24 die-cast cars. Ricky Rudd came the year before and signed.

    Loved seeing Terry win this race! I grew up a Mark Martin fan, but i was always excited to see long-time veterans end long winless streaks. It makes me sad, though, to think about how I've seen the last wins of an entire generation of drivers: Bill Elliott, Ricky Rudd, Dale Jarrett, Rusty Wallace, Terry Labonte, Bobby Labonte, Jeff Burton, and of course, Mark Martin.

    This was my first race, I was 3 years old and somehow I still remember being there. After Terry Labonte won the race I remember asking my parents why he didn't smoke his tires (meaning do a burn out). Terry was my first ever favorite NASCAR driver, once he left the 5 car Kyle Busch took it over and ever since then my favorite driver has been Kyle Busch. So you could say the only reason why I would like Kyle is because of Terry Labonte, but Terry will probably be my favorite NASCAR driver of all time. And thanks so much for uploading this!!

      Same here, I was 5 years old and going on 6 when this happened. This was a special moment seeing Texas Terry win that race, especially knowing he rarely won during his career. The fact that Kyle Busch was his successor for three years before finding success in the 18 (Bobby Labonte's number) and even winning the 2015 and 2019 championships is special to watch.
      Kyle Busch was the successor to both Labonte brothers in a way. His early years in the 5 and his prime years in the 18.

    I would've liked to have seen them put ledgend drivers (alongside Earnhardt) in NASCAR 07. I would've liked to have seen what all their driver attribilities would've been. Terry Labonte, Rusty Wallace, Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, etc. It's great that they were in NASCAR Thunder 2004, but I felt they should've stuck with that. Don't get me wrong, I love driving as Dale Earnhardt on the games after I've unlocked him, but I wanna drive as the other guys, too. lol

    It's fitting that Terry Labonte 1st NASCAR Sprint Cup start, 1st and final wins was at Darlington. He still races part time, though 2014 would be his final year overall, (if he does retire this year.) The only thing that's official so far was that the 2014 Daytona 500 would be his last attempt in that race.

    This Southern 500 was different then the one Regan Smith won. Back in 2003, there was 2 races at Darlington. Though 1 more Southern 500 ran in 2004, (in the chase) this was the last original Southern 500 on Labor Day weekend. Eventually, the lone Darlington race was renamed the Southern 500. Granted it's still an big deal, but it's not quite the same consider that the name Southern 500 vanished for a few years after Darlington was given 1 NASCAR Sprint Cup race a year.

    At least the "new Southern 500" will be back next year on Labor Day weekend. 1 thing bothers me, Why NASCAR dropped the Southern 500 after 04 but not the spring Darlington race and just keep the Southern 500? I know Darlington had to give up a race to Texas Motor Speedway and all but why the Southern 500? Granted nowadays the lone Darlington race is once again called Southern 500. But between 2005 and 2008, there was no Southern 500. They kept the Spring Darlington race but then changed it to the Southern 500. Would it been better sense to remove the Spring Darlington race and left the Southern 500 alone? It just seems like the Southern 500 lost some of it's luster when it didn't run and NASCAR kept the Spring Darlington going instead.

      They did. The spring races 2005-2014 are considered the Southern 500. A few years it didn't have the name, because Dodge was paying them more at the time. But the 2009-2014 races actually used the Southern 500 name, and the 2005-08 winners are retroactively considered Southern 500 winners.

    • @stephenholloway6893
      @stephenholloway6893 6 лет назад

      Not at first since the name was not used when Dodge had the sponsor rights. The laps returned to 500 miles format but til,2009 there was no Southern 500 by name.

    • @RacingWorldTV202
      @RacingWorldTV202 6 лет назад

      NASCAR wanted to take the Labor Day weekend race to a big market so they moved it to Auto Club Speedway where they could tap into the Los Angeles market, but they never found traction or success there and honestly all five Labor Day weekend races there were pretty unmemorable and attendance gradually went down for that second race. It would've been better for NASCAR to have let Darlington keep the Labor Day weekend date but move it to Sunday night and gave Auto Club Speedway a Chase date to replace the second Rockingham date that the Southern 500 held in 2004. Then in 2005 they could work out the mess that would come with removing Darlington's second date and Rockingham's lone date (:/).
