My dogs gums are brown, not completly but they have spots of brown on them. He is a 3 year old GSD. Any info or advice on what his case is would be awesome

My dog is 12 .he is on his last leg .pale gums ,panting and heavy breathing . fever eating well I think . A week ago and 300.00 Wray showed nothing . They put him on pain meds in Case it his joints . He want swim ,run and walk slow .This all started 2 weeks ago . But I know he is dying . I found a large hard area protruding from his ribs. I don't want to put him trough surgery at his age . Very sad. He is my best friend and hunting buddy . So far he is happy and eating and drinking . Imo I will need to put him down soon :(
