Imagine calling someone an underachiever if he has Hakeem's career, especially when we know Broussard is old enough to have watched Olajuwon' from the beginning and seen how devastating a player he was. As a Spurs fan if Wemby can be Hakeem and put a couple of banners in the AT&T Center while being a top 5-10 player alltime I'd be beyond thrilled. I don't know how anyone can underrate Hakeem after the way he put the Rockets on his back in 1994 to carry a team with no other stars to a title in 94. Only other carry jobs I have seen like that are Duncan in 03 and Dirk in 11.

The weight on his shoulders must be enormous just of the expectations the media put on him. I wish him all the luck in the world but realistically he didn't really play in a hard league, he has 10ish euroleague games averaging 6.5 ppg and 4 rpg, he was't really put against the best amd that one year he was, he didn't really show much (he was like 18 at the time so there's one of rhe reasons) but comparing him to Luka who was euroleague mvp when he was about Victor's age is like comparing formula one to carting. Give him time and let him develop, hopefully he'll avoid injuries but due to his height I highly doubt he'll be able to achieve that. Best of luck.

Then again there is Kareem who was 7'2" barefoot and he played 20 years back in an era where stars regularly retired in their early 30s because he meticulously kept himself in shape. The fact Durant was able to come back a top 3 player in the league from a stress fracture in his foot gives me reason to be optimistic. This isn't 1978 when the Blazers were injecting Walton with cortisone and telling him to play through a stress fracture. And this isn't the Yao situation where he was practically property of the Chinese national team and expected to play on a stress fracture in the Beijing Olympics since as far as China was concerned, that was the pinnacle of his career and the whole reason they'd been investing in him for years. Which of course ruined his career the same way it did Walton's being made to play through a serious injury like that.

The best physical comp is Ralph Sampson who started out playing amazing and then got injured and went downhill from there. But that is a long time ago, sports medicine and everything about keeping players from getting injured is way advanced from then. Also, he is going to the Spurs where Popovich has gotten great long mostly healthy careers from the prior two seven foot or taller centers who got drafted first and are now in the HOF. On top of that, Wemby will be playing PF and he will not be banging in the paint with big centers all game long. His ability to guard 1-5 means he will be out on the perimeter a lot giving guards and forwards actual nightmares after they try to shoot over him or drive past him for thirty minutes of their lives.

Why is no one mentioning that he got owned in Euroleague, and had to change to a weaker team. France league basketbol is really bad, the numbers are naturally high, cant compare with Doncic etc. He will definitely struggle in his first 3 years. France people are really good at creating brands, and they did a great job creating the brand Wemby.

He played 7-8 mpg in Euroleague as he was 17. His coach (TP's brother) was so bad TP fired him since then. Luka was great at 18 but he played in the best european team and his coach let him play. What did ASVEL in euroleague since Wemby went out ? Worse. Then Wemby had't to change to a weaker team : ASVEL wanted him to stay but he prefered playing with coach Collet, which is French national coach besides his job with Mets92. Even if his (weak) team was swept by Monaco in the championships finals (Monaco lost by nothing in euroleague semi-finals this year), they beat ASVEL, the team he just left. Wemby was MVP, DPOY, best scorer, best in rebounds and in blocks. Even Luka wouldn't have made this Mets92 team do better.

@@Ebriel0000000 Asvel is worse after Wemby left, REALLY? Wemby had zero positive effect on Asvel. Asvel is a low level team in Euroleague, but they are at least playing in Euroleague. Getting MVP, MIP etc titles in French league which is one of the worst leagues in Europe is not an achievement for a possible GOAT player. Wemby played terribly in Euroleague and a winning mentality player should have taken the challange to play better in the best league of Europe next season, instead he ran away to a weaker team in order not to play in Euroleague. Wemby is a great player, but not a player with winning mentality.

ASVEL was only 3rd next year (Mets92 made better as they lost their previous season 2 best players), with the worst points difference of the top 5 teams. TP fired the coach this year even if he was his own brother : that's how the man was bad as a coach. Last year Wemby was MVP, DPOY, best scorer, best rebounder and best blocker despite Monaco was a top 3 euroleague team the same year with good players. You don't know what you're talking about.

Let’s be real, the narrative of him needing to bulk up is pretty dumb. With that kind of frame, putting on weight will make him MORE injury prone, not less. He needs to find the right balance, which is likely not much more than where he’s already at.

When the sample is so tiny, stats are irrelevant. Wemby is thin but he has strengh... then he moves very well and doesn't need to jump a lot : sure he will have injuries : every player has. Porzingis, Oden or Yao were injury prone because they were heavier than him by far... and less mobile. People must let Wemby be himself.
