  • “This is the story of how, 70 years ago today, George Orwell died. It is not wholly a tragic story.”
George Orwell’s biographer D.J. Taylor reconstructs the months, days and weeks prior to George Orwell’s death, with the help of select items and letters from the Orwell Archive, which is held at University College London, including the luncheon menu from Orwell's and Sonia Brownell's wedding reception at the Ritz in October 1949, and a wedding card from the night nurses at UCH.
All of these items will be used in the forthcoming Orwell Archive event preceding the Orwell Lecture on the 18th of February at University College London. Visit www.orwellfoundation.com to register.
    ---
To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the death of the English author, journalist and essayist George Orwell (1903-1950) the Orwell Foundation and the Orwell Archive present a new short film 'The Night Orwell Died.'
In the winter of 1949/1950 Orwell was being treated for tuberculosis in University College Hospital London, having recently returned to from the Hebredian Island of Jura, where he had just completed his final novel, Nighteen Eighty-Four.
George Orwell (Eric Blair) died of a burst artery in the lungs in the small hours of the morning on 21st January 1950. He was forty-six years old. Orwell was survived by his son Richard Blair, his sister Avril, and his second wife Sonia Brownell, who he had married in UCH on the 13th October 1939.

A great hero of humanity. His later books are not only great literature, they are very entertaining (sometimes in a ghastly way). If only he had lived longer.

I read one of his books, i can't remember which one but it had such an effect on me that i one by one bought the rest of his books to read and after completing that i then read the compilations of his essays, pamphlets and letters. Orwell was a great writer but more than that he was a great human being who when he wrote knew what he was saying as it came from personal experience and even after all these decades since his passing time has only strengthened his reputation for standing up for the working classes, for free speech, equality and standing up to tyranny no matter its sources.
