Why is Syril Karn so captivating as a character? He's been dumped into an office-themed hellscape instead of all the other wild theories we had about him and I still can't wait to see what happens next.
I think it's because he's such a relatable, realistic character. Many of us can relate to trying our best for what we think is right and still failing. Falling hard in life and having to accept the mediocre.
Sam voicing a storm trooper is a helluva lot better of a nod to the franchise as a whole and a much better cameo then Daniel Craig, imo. (Like Mr Craig in his other works though)
The Shoretrooper thought Cassian looked suspect because of "swivel head" ... him looking around in a shifty way. The irony is that Tay Kolma also had "swivel head" as he explains that his political allegiances have gone far afield ... and Mon Mothma determines she can trust Tay because of it.
If you check out the earlier scene where the suspects are running and being chased by a trooper the young guy that runs past Cassian has the same light stubble, the same scruffy black hair and theyre both dressed as Aladdin. Cass is dressed like the suspects, looks like the suspect, is coming from the same area as the suspect.and is visibly agitated. After that the trooper just decided to keep up his arrest stats for the day.
@@voiceofraisin3778 Yeah. All of the crackdowns announced to the ISB supervisors clearly filtered all the way down to basic troopers as 'double your arrest qouta. I don't care what they did, just get your arrests up.'
Fantastic episode. It did so much to show us the fallout from what has happened. It lays the groundwork for what is to come so well. Casian going home was a pivotal arc for him. Also amazing seeing how brutal the Enforcer droids are
You could tell the heist wasnt about the money. Now we see it was mostly to get the emperor to go overkill. I'm wondering when Andor will get his own enforcer droid as he has in rogue one.
I'd like to see what kind of person Meero is now that she'll likely soon be taking direct action against the rebels and dissidents. In episode 7, she shows disdain for excessive force and retaliation because she believes it will backfire, so maybe she'll be more of an even-handed, guile antagonist than the planet-exploding Tarkinites we've seen in the past. My speculation is that she'll have a near victory over the rebels, but will ultimately be thwarted by sabotage from Blevin or another ISB officer.
I would like to add here that the concept of Rebels jumping from sector to sector to escape Imperial jurisdiction was first mentioned in West End Games Imperial Sourcebook & the Death Star Technical Manual. Hence the creation of Priority Over Sectors and Grand Moffs, which Grand Moff Tarkin was the first (and most prominent).
I think also the show gives off the idea that people like the ISB guy considers the Empire to be a constant. So they get to fight each other over who gets to control their small fiefs, because they don't think the Empire could ever actually collapse.
The Star Wars that actually good and not filled fan service and boring dialogue that have no weight to them. Loving andor and it’s way of story telling, giving us looks into everyday workers/ empire officers and people being oppressed by the empire. It’s fun to see something that nothing to do with THE SKYWALKER SAGA! an entire universe needs more stories
It's honestly so fun and refreshing to see the Imperial point of view in this series being framed through the ISB and its bureaucracy. The Empire is usually framed by its military, and by some high ranking baddie in a uniform who barks orders at stormtroopers (or some other kind of elite henchmen) and trades cartoonish one-liners with the "heroes". But here we actually get to see the gears turning somewhat, what mechanisms need to work at the top, how office politics can be just as poisonous to the Empire's day-to-day as the growing Rebellion. It's a really nice change of pace, as is the whole series.
The inter-office politicking isn't the Empire being inefficient, it is working exactly as intended. The goal of the empire is not "order" that is just the lie they sell. On an ideological level fascism is defined by conflict. The empire needs an enemy in order to justify its own existence. It was brought about due to the clone wars, now the separatists have been defeated they need the rebellion to justify taking over systems from corporate security and slave labor programs to build superweapons (to defeat what? the rebels don't even have a navy). Thus, the ISB's ultimate goal is not to generate intelligence for security, but to generate intelligence to fuel ongoing paranoia. We see this with Dedra Meero, she's a broken clock. Dedra Meero is correct to take the rebels seriously, however just like with the common expression, she's eventually right not through analysis, but because she sees rebellion in literally everything. "It's to random to be random". But it literally is random, the rebels are not a unified force, but a multitude of differencing groups who spend half the time fighting each other, and the other half greeting each other by guessing who is responsible for the last attack on the imperials. Thus Dedra Meero should never get proper access to intelligence assets when things are working properly. It is necessary for the continuation of the empire for her to rely on her paranoid instincts. The second more immediate reason is that conflict within the bureaucracy prevents the centralization of power outside of the established one. This was the case for the real-life inspiration of the Empire where interpersonal conflict was encouraged in a large part by the leader. The whole thing is a rickety bridge roped together by the emperor because ultimately the state only exists for him. Once he's gone the whole thing is designed to come crashing down. (im not necessarily disagreeing with you btw, just kinda expanding on what you said)
Ok, that was a pretty great edit with the outro sequence. One thing that struck me that I haven't seen anyone else mention is the end of goodbye scene between Cassian and his mother is that as soon as he leaves, she walks to a table, puts down her cane and picks up a blaster. Woman is not fooling around anymore.
Your outro threw me for a loop. It just so happened that I had stepped away just as the video was about to end and I was ready to start jamming along with the outro, but the silence after that first beat really confused me. I finally got back to the screen just as he said "what happened?", echoing my own thoughts.
What i love about this episode (and to some extent the series) is the portrayal of The Dance. People with public facing status navigating and speaking of rebellion in hushed tones, in broad daylight, while presenting entirely different faces to the world around them. And theyre not all the same. Luthen hides entirely behind a mask, while Mon Mothma simply obfuscates her goals and intentions. The use of doubletalk and vaguery is FANTASTIC. Its something ive really wanted to see more of in the franchise, and this series is a perfect opportunity to utilize it all. And theyve really delivered
What I love to imagine is how the mood was at the ISB headquarters and in the round meeting room after the destruction of the Death Star and not to mentioned how it was in the aftermath of Palpatine’s death
Not every day we see a breakdown in live action on how the Sectors and for that matter Oversectors work. Sure we know about Moffs, Grand Moffs, Regional Governors (Moffs) but how does each sector work especially in relations with the Imperial Navy and Imperial Army. Remembering each Sector is overseen by a Moff and has their own Imperial Star Destroyer Fleet (with an Admiral). Those fleets can NOT cross sectors without permission. An Oversector oversees several sectors and would be overseen by a Grand Moff (Tarkin being the first). Grand Moffs could order the redeployment of Sector Fleets as Tarkin did with the 7th. Grand Admirals were not bound by Sector or even Oversector rules which always led to the Debate who was more powerful or who out commanded who? Grand Moff Tarkin or Grand Admiral Thrawn. The answer to that was technically Thrawn as he answered to the Emperor directly as Tarkin was a Civilian. That said in ANH Tarkin had command over Vader when on the Death Star and Vader could go ANYWHERE. All damn well complicated but intriguing to playout
This might be a far stretch, but I think know how Mon Mothma's story arc is going to end on the Andor series. It will end with her getting ready to be picked up the crew of the Ghost moments before the Rebels episode called "Secret Cargo" then it will continue on with her on Rebels, Rogue One and Return of the Jedi. It's far fetched theory but it will be pretty neat.
Interesting take you've got on Dedra's sector system critique. Given the ISB's role in the Empire and the way she outlined her arguments, she was referring to the bureaucratic rather than the political problems of the system. Of course office politics will have a negative effect on cooperation, but the bigger problem is the way the system is structured. The ISB acts as the Emperor's secret police, and just like any police force, jurisdiction in a case is a major issue. Dedra's point is that the criminals and rebels the ISB face don't follow the same rules. After the heist, Cassian & Co didn't stay in the same sector of space and wait to be caught. Instead they thwarted the ISB's rigid bureaucratic structure by splitting up and travelling across the galaxy. Dedra was right to argue that the ISB has to move away from it's regimented geographically based system in order to combat the rebels. So although most of the Empire's response to Aldhanni, like levying punitive taxes and grossly inflating prison sentences, will only push the galaxy into supporting the rebels, some of the changes should benefit the Empire. From the show so far it seems like the ISB up until now has been a fairly standard, highly bureaucratic police force, despite their special political role. However, with the Emperor giving the ISB primacy over other military and civilian bodies, along with Star War's version of The Patriot Act, the ISB is becoming a proper secret police force. Although they won't scrap their current Sector-based system entirely, it's clear the ISB is moving towards a more flexible case- based and intelligence gathering organisation. It's easy to see that the ISB could continue evolving throughout Andor, with Dedra and Cassian constantly changing their tactics to get one step ahead of each other
Just got to say, Anton Lesser's performance and character are brilliant hope we see more of that. Also the writing. To me this is the best Star Wars show.

Loved how this series is really portraying the Rebels as not being 100% perfect either. Content to hold a 12-year old boy and his mother hostage while they carried out their heist. Shows the realities of war and how when you're up against a ruthless enemy you need to be ruthless yourself.
