Comic adaptations of video game characters being awesome is no new thing. Just check out how awesome Mario and his cast was in the Nintendo Power comics 😊
Yeah, and the Pokemon Adventures manga is awesome too! It turns out that if you let talented people use a game's world to its fullest, cool things happen.
I’ve put my thoughts to words before on videos that specifically focus on the cast’s characterisation but to put simply here: the cast in this comic series is very different from how they were originally written over in Japan and that’s usually worse off, especially in Shadow’s case. Thanks, Sega Mandates!
If you like this, then check out the Archie Sonic comics. It pretty much gives you all of what you liked tenfolds even though there was a point where the writing got bad for a time but that’s bound to happen with a long running comic. Plus it feels a lot like a unified definitive continuity. Everything Sonic related up until it’s cancellation was pulled from and pieced together to make a giant world that pays homage to every form of Sonic media possible. It’s a shame it got canceled, the world, the lore, the unique cast and their development, dynamics, and relationships just faded away so quickly.
While we're on the subject, Ranni what do you think about people's criticism that IDW Sonic is too forviging/compassionate? I've seen many, MANY people say they can't fathom reading the IDW comics because they absolutely butchered Sonic's character and made him a doormat of second chances for the story and characters to step on, and it makes me wonder: Huh??? Sure, Sonic does let his enemies go a few times, but he straight up tells Surge in one issue that he does that because he believes in the freedom to do as one pleases. He lives by that and doesn't want to take such an ability from others by killing or imprisoning them, because then they definitely will not be able to change; and, if they decide to use said freedom for evil once more, he'll just stop them again because that's what heroes do. (SPOILERS AHEAD FROM IMPOSTER SYNDROME ISSUE AND FORWARD) One thing people on Twitter complain a lot about is Sonic's 'big oof' reaction to the news Starline had died. Honestly, I would've reacted the same way. Sonic didn't feel bad about that because a) Starline had already caused enough destruction by being involved with spreading the Metal Virus and then unleashing Surge and Kit on him, and b) IT WAS HIS CHOICE TO STAY IN THE COLLAPSING BUILDING WHEN HE HAD A CHANCE TO RUN FOR IT HIMSELF TO TAKE BELLE'S HELP. I can see why people would say his reaction was ooc, but in my opinion, that was the most Sonic reaction to finding out Starline had passed. Sonic isn't a total doormat as people like to generalize-- the comic itself shows him being very close to tipping over the edge and losing his patience (there's this really good panel of him staring down Eggman that Evan Stanley did, I think, in issue 55 or 56? Yeah, that made my jaw drop because I'd never seen Sonic so angry before)
I wish sega would remake the old sonic games, like sonic heroes, sonic riders, shadow the hedgehog, sonic unleashed, etc. ( before they made the bad games )
There’s a lot of issues I have with the way Flynn writes Sonic. He understands the character but gets A LOT wrong, I don’t hate the guy but I wouldn’t want him writing for the games too much or at all really. In terms of writing and characterization, Shiro Maekawa is this best the franchise has ever had
@@tomasfong40 Uhhhh Let's see. He writes Sonic as this weird mix of his SA Era and Meta Era versions, where on one hand he seems this cool, cocky, adventure-seeking, compassionate hero on the surface, but also spouts a bunch of patronizing platitudes to pass them off as "being deep" or to feel good about himself, and some of his jokes are way too on the nose or just has the same bored dudebro attitude towards some enemies (such as Neo Metal Sonic) like Colors/Lost World. Case in point, him refusing to help Amy because "he has his own way" in Issue #4, or gaslighting Shadow to deter him from killing Eggman in Issue #6. He's also has this ridiculous and unwarranted forgiving side, despite catching up with him in the worst ways time and time again, first with Eggman, then with Metal.....
Idk what you're talking about, the vast majority of sonic fans glaze the idw comics. If anything it's kinda hard to find some real critics of the idw comics
A panel I don’t like is Sonic calling Metal a jerk for staying with Eggman and comparing him to Omega Even tho Eggman himself clearly stated that even if Metal turned good his programming would make him go back to serving Eggman and turn evil again. Metal literally has no choice Omega turned against Eggman because he threw him out
People say it’s good and I don’t think it’s bad at all but it’s just too tame and doesn’t take many risks for my liking. I liked how archie was. I do like starline however he was a great character (not calling it bad I just miss the less safeness of the older conics)
Exactly I was thinking. I was upset that Archie Sonic was cancelled but then I decided to give this series a chance. However, it’s not the same. It’s been about 75 issues now and nothing has gotten interesting as it progressed. It’s basically the same thing. Needless to say. The fan continuation of Archie Sonic Online has given me more familiar feelings to the old Archie Sonic than this.
While I agree Ian Flynn would be a boon to SEGA, I don't think they'll be doing it anytime soon because 1) They are a primarily Japanese company with different business values, and 2) SEGA is cautious of another Ken Penders event. But with the the success of the Paramount movies, the overall good reviews of the IDW comic series, and Ian Flynn being a lead writer on Sonic Frontiers, things may be looking up.

Its sad that a year later all im seeing is "bad IDW" all because the comic pacing slowed down slightly. Like if you legit read Archie Sonic and didn't just skip to the good stuff after the fact, well IDW is still well outperorming Archie in overall quality. And honestly i just want to let IDW cook. Like i don't like the limits set by Sega, I'd like Sonic and Amy to at least have the sort of implied relationship that Peach and Mario have rather than this "he must forever be single so creepy human girls can kiss him guilt free" attitude Sega has. And then there's the fun idea of teasing potential character deaths, but all of that is Sega. Everything else has been great and I'm happy to watch and wait, and read. And im certain that by the time this hits issue 160 it will be as good as where Archie left off, as opposed to needing 160 issue to even start on thay journey, since these writers seem more to be both fans of fhe subject material and respectful of one another even if they don't agree.
Nah, Archie is still more interesting than the entirety of IDW comics, even the earliest parts where it like a mixture of Adventures of Sonic and Sonic SatAM, at least it had funny moments.
@@ashesGeek right read issues 1-20 and tell me that again good luck Robotnicing your way into that argument. If you actually read those issues, yeah your rose tinted glasses might fall off as you realize that Archie was a snooze fest.
@codyraugh6599 I read these issues recently and yes, while Archie is a snooze fest, at least it's an interesting one unlike IDW which got its balls cut off by Sega of Japan. Good luck with searching for character development and drama in a 50 page game advertisement which will certainly not happen for a while now.
@@ashesGeek so Sonic a videogame character is a advertisement for Sonic the dame video game character... Much arguments, very good, so enlightened. So which shadow out of the 160 different conflicting back stories and personalities was your favorite, which of the 80 main character Sonic's was your favorite? Which archie was "your" Archie and which Archie is the heretic? Because at least I don't need a syllabus of whose writing which issue to have a consistent setting, characters, tone, and lore.... You know the basic minimums needed for a continuous series.
@codyraugh6599 Yeah, every other media is games advertisement, but at least it must be good on its own even if the person doesn't want to play the games and IDW comics doesn't have anything ambitious to be its own thing other than games slave. "Continuos series" which Sonic wasn't and still not really isn't in the games, and before you tell me about SA2, Heroes and 06 Sega of Japan themselves stated that Sonic isn't that heavily connected so the gameplay matters to them more than storytelling, which means all 2000's games don't matter in terms of everything.
This is also the Archie Sonic reboot done right (especially since the Freedom Fighters are absent and no, the Freedom Fighters will never appear in IDW Sonic), IDW Sonic also has much better writing and better written characters, I especially love Tangle and Whisper.
IDW is doing well with the sonic stories so far, but I'm not optimistic about the future. I still haven't forgiven them for when they made Transformers massively gay. In two different continuities.
That depends on writers and and/or the franchise owners I guess. I don't believe Sega or Flynn/Stanley team will let IDW to force drastic changes on the franchise out of nowhere. Especially since the comic line is canon to the games now

Sonic is a good guy, but he is a terrible hero and also kind of a dick. First of all, he has a huge ego and things the world revolves around him. Second of all he doesn’t care about any consequences. he is always facing egg man and other villains and you want to know why, because he doesn’t kill them. Of course his villains always find a way to come back like is he stupid and of course they’re gonna go on another chaotic rampage for world domination because he doesn’t end their lives. 1. He's actually pretty humble and gives tons of compliments and props to his friends and others 2. Sonic has his morals and way he goes about life, he's not gonna change who he is because he loves who he is, and that's what makes Sonic himself 3. @@yrooxrksvi7142Mmmmmmmmm, there was no fakeout deaths, we already knew sonic was gonna survive and Everybody else was zombified, and me personally I think starline was pretty cool, he almost killed sonic and silver in their first encounter not with his "over powered" gadgets but because of a trick, sooooooo yeah I got no idea what your on about buddy

If we know Sonic was gonna survive, then there was a cure. If there was a cure, then this wasn't permanent. In other words, no real stakes. Just edgy melodrama bs
Starline is pathetic, his design literally screams Deviantart fursona. And if he was so smart, then why did he fail to realize the flaw in trying to control the Undeadly Koopalings with the Conch ? And how was he so easily humiliated by Eggman ? Get a clue, this is utter garbage, _buddy_
The book fair has idw comics now :D
Comic adaptations of video game characters being awesome is no new thing. Just check out how awesome Mario and his cast was in the Nintendo Power comics 😊
Ooh I should check those out!
I heard Amy's personality was inspired by the Fleetway Sonic comics, but haven't read them yet, so can't confirm.
THEY MERGED TIMELINES the game and IDW
(SPOILERS AHEAD FROM IMPOSTER SYNDROME ISSUE AND FORWARD)
One thing people on Twitter complain a lot about is Sonic's 'big oof' reaction to the news Starline had died. Yeah, that made my jaw drop because I'd never seen Sonic so angry before)
Hmm...I'm not in that part of the comic yet, but I will give you an answer when I'm caught up lol!
I wish sega would remake the old sonic games, like sonic heroes, sonic riders, shadow the hedgehog, sonic unleashed, etc. ( before they made the bad games )
Now it is cannon also
Not rly
I like both idw and archie sonic
There’s a lot of issues I have with the way Flynn writes Sonic. He understands the character but gets A LOT wrong, I don’t hate the guy but I wouldn’t want him writing for the games too much or at all really. In terms of writing and characterization, Shiro Maekawa is this best the franchise has ever had
What does he get wrong?
He's also has this ridiculous and unwarranted forgiving side, despite catching up with him in the worst ways time and time again, first with Eggman, then with Metal.....
thank you for making positive videos about the idw comics, it’s so annoyingly difficult to find people being positive about them
Idk what you're talking about, the vast majority of sonic fans glaze the idw comics. If anything it's kinda hard to find some real critics of the idw comics

Bro forget sonic frontiers happen 💀💀
When does Shadow Appear? I want that volume
A panel I don’t like is Sonic calling Metal a jerk for staying with Eggman and comparing him to Omega
Even tho Eggman himself clearly stated that even if Metal turned good his programming would make him go back to serving Eggman and turn evil again. Metal literally has no choice
Omega turned against Eggman because he threw him out
huh i really liked the Sonic Forces's story.
Lol, at first i thought this video was about how IDW took Sonic rights from Archie
Good video!
Thanks!
Finally! Some content
Off topic but I hear that one of the Forces developers apologized for helpinng making this game and had suffered depression from the backlash.
Wow, that's really sad.
Well he shouldn’t it was a great story just a very short game.
enjoy Ian Flynn's work all you want, but don't you dare compare him to James Gunn. He's inflicted more trauma on kakologophobic people like me than you can imagine
Here the thing I just bought my first Sonic comic and the ones I have is Sonic the hedgehog Scarpnik island IDW 2 but I don’t know which one the first one is or the next so can someone plz tell me the order of it cause I’m so confused.
"Continuos series" which Sonic wasn't and still not really isn't in the games, and before you tell me about SA2, Heroes and 06 Sega of Japan themselves stated that Sonic isn't that heavily connected so the gameplay matters to them more than storytelling, which means all 2000's games don't matter in terms of everything.
where can i read the sonic idw comics?
There are many free options to read it online if you Google it
oh heey look who wrote frontiers
Man I love sonic forces
IAN FLYNN gets everything right except Amy Rose in the future of Sonic apparently 🤣🤣
Especially since the comic line is canon to the games now
I remember ignoring the Comic for the first three years of its Existence. I was so disappointed with Forces and everything Sonic that I had completely lost interest in this Series.
One day in late 2021, I was randomly recommended the Comic Dub by Adrenaline Dubs (fantastic People btw) and clicked it on a whim.
BEST. DECISION. OF. THAT. YEAR.
*"No kill code"*
That's it. Speedrunning for ruining Sonic the hedgehog.
Yeah Sonic doesn't have a no kill code, he just doesn't like killing people. He doesn't follow rules.
I don't like it
Sonic stories always have some kind of message behind them which the idw missing.
The only one I liked is scrapnik island because it's have the type of theme and massage you find is sonic games :-)
I like how these stories take place between Sonic Forces and Frontiers. At least, I think they’re meant to. Either way, I hope we see Sage show up in the comics, granted, it’d need to be a time skip to make sense for her being there.
Sonic forces is just easy not bad
Wait i heard that people hate lan flynn so is he bad or good i can't tell the difference between these two arguments from archie fans and other fans like what is this hole drama about
My problem with blaze and cream shouldn't be allowed in the Sonic world But unfortunately I'm am concerned about confusion about blaze and cream haters You know but blaze should not be truthful trusted Ally issues

How many deaths and how much collateral damage do you think sonic indirectly caused because he never finishes the job. Always letting these villains go just for them to come back and repeat the definition of insanity just like Batman and daredevil. I call them the insanity trio. That’s all I have to say.
1. He's actually pretty humble and gives tons of compliments and props to his friends and others
2. Sonic has his morals and way he goes about life, he's not gonna change who he is because he loves who he is, and that's what makes Sonic himself
3. Sonic doesn't like killing and imprisoning unless he absolutely 100% undoubtedly has to, that's just who he is
@@SillyTron_ sonic is too much of a pussy to do what needs to be done. If I had sonic villans, I’d kill them without a second thought. His villains are pure evil and beyond saving. 😡
I only agree with metal sonic criticism...it was stupid as hell but sonic Killing his villains everytime just feels out of character from the start it was never his thing except killing god like beings but that's a different case..but still.
Same way you wouldn’t picture Mickey Mouse kill Pete it’s the same for Sonic. That seems out of character for him to outright kill without hesitation

IDW Sonic is good man
I... disagree I mean the potryal of IDW shadow might be bad but the writing and characterization of other characters are mostly good like blaze and Silver's dynamic,Amy and sonic's dynamic and whisper, tangle's friendship and the character development and growth they had in their own mini series so I disagree there's so much positive to love about these comics and it really does have it's moments etc yes... not perfect have it's highs and lows of course..but for the most part it's a good comic series
