That's because modern cars have crumple zones, multiple air bags, ABS, traction control and are crammed full of electronics and all the other driver aids, safety and emissions crap we're told we NEED by those in the "know"!😡😡 What an absolute joke! Classics from this era have never been so appealing, that's why their prices are going skyward. 👍👍👍👍
Very rare indeed. Mine was a 70 GT6+ sapphire blue. It also had a set of Mini-Lites wheels. Wow! Was it sharp! All my friends had some second hand muscle car. Got to take it to the high school prom with a hot blonde. It was like being James Bond for a brief time in one’s life. Wish I still owned that car.
@@philtucker1224 i can´t have cars without top(where i live only at night, the sun is too strong it burns our heads and the cloth roof in a year or two, sunny all year around this year rained more than in the last 40 years and wasn´t that much) but when i saw this i bought it just don´t see it run more than the E-type 2+2 V12, 5 year older as it is a 73 , GT6

I remember him visiting the shop where I worked each Saturday and he was driving the most beautiful V12 E. it was not very old and shone like new in deep Jaguar metallic Claret. Was then, and still remains, one of the true first car-loves of my life.
@@philtucker1224 that´s nice i really like it but mine is the 2+2 ,i also had at home nice cars that my father sold high-end cars from home that were from his friends , when i was 16 my father had bought a Ferrari and me and a friend went for a ride as i was used to drive a lot of cars but a neighboor of mine crashed into me with a old proton mercedes i was F...D some are there till today , now they belong to me as i kept all my father had, he passed away 3 years ago from a badly done medical exam those that they stick a video camera in our third eye, not a vhs camera ,off course, a colonoscopie or similar i ain´t done any yet and after this i think i´ll never do it, i asked a friend of mine some years ago about that exam and he told me "they literally f...d me in the ass" no anestethic at the time, now they give us a blue liquid and do it with us knocked down, some opium derivated drug and we sleep while they do inimaginable things to us

I have exactly the same configuration (2,5 liters , triple weber and a complete 6-3-1 stainless steel exhaust line) and I have a lot of fun with this car! I love it!
You would notice even better throttle response with Webers, with their pre-emptive accelerator pumps. I put triple Dellortos on my 240Z and it was night and day by comparison.
Mk2 GT6 is a real stunner, and with a few mods like this one it is really fabulous. I've been a Triumph fan since I was at school and I persuaded my dad to get a new Mk2 2000. I would love a MkIII with upgrades this one has.
The GT 6 Spitfire always interested me, as did the standard Spitfire range throughout its production era. The video is fantastic. A superbly 'souped up' GT6. I'm an old guy who wants one!
If only my late father could have seen this car. He had a GT6 he was working on for years, but never quite finished before he got too old and sick to do anything with it. Sad day when he sold it.
Kept him happily occupied in his latter years hopefully. I’m also getting that way myself and it’s essential to have a constructive pastime to prevent boredom I believe.
I'm 71 and had a thing for Spitfires...8 of them in the 1980's and during that time had 6 GT-6's. When I get to Heaven I will look up your Pop and we will have a great time remembering our cars.
I've been aware of the GT6+ about 50 years ago because someone owned one on the other side of the block from where I lived when I was in high school in the late 60's. It was nice but I REALLY liked the MGB that someone own across from the GT6+. A few years later I got a MGB, I'm a convertible person!!!😊😊
I had a 2500s estate with same engine set up except it was full race inc suspension it went around castle coombe in the early nineties and and destroyed a group of TVRs with me driving Great memories you can get some power out of that old six considering it started life in a leyland atlas van !! It was as smooth as a BMW and it would do over 140mph
My older sister and her bf had a BRG ‘68 GT6. What a wonderful car! We lived in Long Beach which began hosting F1 in 1975. I can recall my sis was always a good driver because Dad built race motors. I recall bouncing through some bumpy sweepers on the old track route at about 85mph and the car just stuck! I thought my sis was like Brian Redman lol! 🏁✨ This one looks amazing with the 2.5 and updates!
Miss these cars. Had a Spitfire 1500 that I swapped out the engine for a GT6's 2l straight 6, and upgraded brakes and suspension, to create the car Triumph should have made ; a convertible GT6. So much fun in that car.

Looks like the Shelby Wheels I have on mine. I ran Triple webbers for many years on my 2 liter, but switched back to rebuilt strombergs. The Webbers were fun, but gas mileage was horrible and I could never get it to run smoothly at lower rpms. Had mine for 50 years now, and find the Strombergs are fine for Putzing around. Ive got SAH headers, CV joint conversion, lowered front, trunionless kit from Rimmer with the thicker stub axels, along with slotted rotors. Maybe not as good as a 240Z or Alfa in its day, but still a Great Car and parts availability plentiful and many still on the road, which is more than you can say for its competition. Never plan to let mine go !
Remember a pair of brothers I knew bought one of these off a pongo on the base in 73'?. Already starting to rust but one of the coolest looking cars back in the day. That rear door was years ahead of hatchbacks, like a Jaguar. Always wanted one, but I got too tall and wide.
It's Canadian slang for a derogatory term describing an enlisted airman from the air base (not an officer) by local yokel slack jawed townsfolk. My father would have kicked my arse for using such a disrespectful townie (local) term, as he started his national service in 51' as a British private in the Black Watch before being plucked out for officer candidacy and returned to the Highland Light Infantry as a second lieutenant, staying right through the Suez insurgency. He ended as a light Colonel in the Canadian Airforce as acting chief of military intelligence, but always with a healthy respect for all ranks...not like his long haired wastril teenage street racing sons.@@philtucker1224
I've owned a few of these, as well as half a dozen TR6 (with injection and also carbs) as well as two E-Types. The Triumph 2.5 is good for around 150BHP and the E-Type 250BHP The E-Types would always blow the Triumphs into the dust, so I can't imagine this car as cute as it is, would be any match for an E-Type. The E-type is good for about 150MPH your car would be unstable at that speed! As it's just too small/light/flimsy for anything over 100MPH. It would need to be radically re-built to deal with high speeds over 100MPH It looks nice though, but no match for an E-Type, they are two different things!
Yes I owned 1, I replaced all the door & window rubbers heater core etc to get rid of a persistent water leak. Did similar things to the engine & suspension as this car,the biggest problem is the rear end you can only drop it so far & still the handling is so so.
I had a 1967 GT6 mark one, with the same engine. Bloody thing handled like a sledgehammer riding on tyres with the same adhesion qualities as those made of balloons that’d been inflated with helium. Diabolical … but hey it’d blow the doors of most cars in a straight line (until you had to navigate a corner and then all hell would unleash)
Had a 69 GT6+ back in the 80s. Put the 2.5 engine in it but the gearbox was weak and wrung off the output shaft at the circlip groove. Had big plans for it but my brother swapped it for a beetle.
I have a 1970 GT6 which had a high compression head upgrade prior to my purchase, I've put the car on a strict diet, with a very light frame and swapped in a Toyota 5 speed. I've kept the clearance up as the roads in my area are a tragedy, I also like a quieter car. The high compression 2L is an impressive motor good power in the low end and delivers power right to the top end. Finding good tires that do it justice is becoming a problem. BTW your car looks better than mine, I do like the Webers.

When I saw my first E-type at age 18 I was disappointed, especially as I was, and still am, a Jaguar fan. I couldn't see what the fuss was about, it looked odd to me. Triumphs and especially the TR5 and GT6 looked much better, went like hell and have fantastic soundtracks.
The GT6 is my favorite Triumph Car ! I like the 69mod on back to the first ones . After 69 the back ends were changed and not as attractive. I don't see many in Tennessee any more.

To re-engage, switch a Suzuki swift over to manual and keep it in second gear whilst driving around town :) The gear ration and noise is about the same as the Spitfire :) With a Bourg Warner overdrive switch on the knob, it would be the same :)

In that shop there were red DE Tomaso Pant eras, Green E-Types, Purple and yellow Stags, white Dolomites, GT6, MGs, yellow Lotus Super7 's and often the motors would be switched out by enthusiasts. I would see some amazing jobs for back then. I was 19. The sale staff would let me sit in the cars as I felt their lives. I bought a MkiV Spitfire when I was 20. What a car! The overdrive made all the difference. It was 1980 and Auckland was a racetrack as the 80's music hit the streets. The cars have memories :)
I had one. The car was terrible at autocross. Thr best thing that happened was a drunk ran a stop sign, and it was totaled. Replaced it with a Europa S4. I lovec the Lotus and hated the Triumph.
What a beautiful car. I had a total of 6 GT-6's and 8 Spitfires during the 1980's. I even put in a turbocharged TR-6 engine in one with a Warner T-50 5 speed transmission, Chevy clutch and flywheel. Even being very careful to never jerk the clutch between shifts, the engine was so powerful that it just ate up read ends. I had a Jag rear end but never narrowed and installed it. Mine was a 1968 without Rotoflex axles. I only have a Spitfire left. It must grind on perfectionists as the only thing Spitfire is the body. It's in storage now for over a decade. i have both cars ,just don´t see it , it had to be a destroyd engine E-type for this to be faster just don´t make any sense you might had been unlucky with your E-type if it runs slower, this is very nice but a not so high level quality, well mine as the original carburators

Great conversion for this car (as the Triumph TR6 2.5 engine has the same external engine mountings as the 2.0 as far as I know). Very nice!

I have a 1967 MK1 GT6 which is still on the road. Great fun to drive and original standard spec, no bigger motor etc.

I had a Lime Green 1967 years ago. I whipped a friend's Porsche 914, and he wanted to drive it. He totaled it with me in it. We were both very lucky.

I live in California and in 1970 I got to test drive a brand new GT6+ with the improved rear suspension. Fun car to drive.

I almost bought one of these in the late 70's. It was only $3,000 back then although back then to me it was a lot of money.
I had one in late 70’s I sold a great 73 VE superbug , the triumph was rusted and a lot of electrical problems but it was fun

I had a mint 1973 GT6 MK2 in 1976. I was 21 yrs. old. It was maroon. I think it was 90 hp. it was not fast, but it corners like it was on rails.
I wonder what they did to the dreadful rear suspension !

When I saw my first E-type at age 18 I was disappointed, especially as I was, and still am, a Jaguar fan. I couldn't see what the fuss was about, it looked odd to me. Triumphs and especially the TR5 and GT6 looked much better, went like hell and have fantastic soundtracks.
Did you successfully receive therapy regarding the E-type disappointment? ( how many Jags do you have now?) 😁🇬🇧
@@philtucker1224 I coped. haha. Fortunately they had the XJ to sooth my wounded soul. I've had a few, currently have an XJ super 8.

The GT6 is my favorite Triumph Car ! I like the 69mod on back to the first ones . After 69 the back ends were changed and not as attractive. I don't see many in Tennessee any more.
Have to disagree, the MK3 taillights were much more integrated with the styling than the old ones.

Ah the GT6... love them best as 2.5 pi but that's nice. I had 1300 Triumph Spitfire. Underpowered but that probably saved my life 😂
I had a Mk4 Spitfire new in 1971, did 24,000 miles in first year, mostly roof down and flat out / sideways. Loved that car
@@alberttalbot9534 a memory to cherish. I miss those days. Life was simpler and so much fun. To re-engage, switch a Suzuki swift over to manual and keep it in second gear whilst driving around town :) The gear ration and noise is about the same as the Spitfire :) With a Bourg Warner overdrive switch on the knob, it would be the same :)
They only made GT6 with a 2.0 engine. (The 2.5 pi cars were TR6 and the 2.5 pi saloons)
@@philtucker1224 I stand corrected thank you. There was a sports car shop at the top of Khyber Pass, Auckland. In that shop there were red DE Tomaso Pant eras, Green E-Types, Purple and yellow Stags, white Dolomites, GT6, MGs, yellow Lotus Super7 's and often the motors would be switched out by enthusiasts. I would see some amazing jobs for back then. I was 19. The sale staff would let me sit in the cars as I felt their lives. I bought a MkiV Spitfire when I was 20. What a car! The overdrive made all the difference. It was 1980 and Auckland was a racetrack as the 80's music hit the streets. The cars have memories :)

The term “mid- engined” is usually reserved for configurations where the engine sits between the front seats and the rear axle.

A very popular car in their day, often referred to as a poor man's Etype.
I had one. The car was terrible at autocross. Thr best thing that happened was a drunk ran a stop sign, and it was totaled. Replaced it with a Europa S4. I lovec the Lotus and hated the Triumph.
Overlooked car. As pretty as any Ferrari.
What a beautiful car. I had a total of 6 GT-6's and 8 Spitfires during the 1980's. I even put in a turbocharged TR-6 engine in one with a Warner T-50 5 speed transmission, Chevy clutch and flywheel. Even being very careful to never jerk the clutch between shifts, the engine was so powerful that it just ate up read ends. I had a Jag rear end but never narrowed and installed it. Mine was a 1968 without Rotoflex axles. I only have a Spitfire left. It must grind on perfectionists as the only thing Spitfire is the body. It's in storage now for over a decade. Does it sound like a Spitfire? It's Chevy V-6 powered and 4 wheel drive.......Holy smokes a 2007 video! Anyway, I love your GT-6. It sounds great!

i have both cars ,just don´t see it , it had to be a destroyd engine E-type for this to be faster just don´t make any sense you might had been unlucky with your E-type if it runs slower, this is very nice but a not so high level quality, well mine as the original carburators
