  • What happens when you combine a typical computer mouse and a trackball input device? You get an odd piece of hardware that never caught on.

    He preferred to google images of a trackball and insert them in the video by editing just so he would't have the trouble to pick it up from the shelf. Indeed a Lazy review. I loved it. Keep up the awesomeness.

    This was somewhat big news at the time in Wyoming, where I lived when the product came out, since Wyoming isn't a hotbed of tech startups (or anything else, except JCPenney and Taco John's, woo!) and Altra was based in Laramie, WY, probably some university kids.
    The writing was already on the wall when it came out, but the intent was to make a compact trackball-sized device that would maximize desk space and minimize repetitive strain -- ergonomics being a giant new fad in the early-mid 90s as it was. By restricting motion to a one inch square, and using a smaller grip, you could use only the fine motor control in your fingers and not strain your wrists. The original style you pictured, you gripped the sides of the puck with your thumb and middle finger, and pressed the top to click. It made more sense than the tiny mouse style you got.
    The design decision they made is what doomed it. Though you didn't have to move your wrist to use it, it wasn't useful for anything above a 640x480 screen, and even then it took some skill. We were going to be rocketing to 1024x768 in just a few years on commodity machines. Also, with larger screens, you don't have all your windows maximized all the time, so the advantage of an absolute position (whack the puck to the upper left corner and double click to close a window) was less. And as you rightly pointed out, absolute positioning is absolute garbage for games.
    Still, it was somebody's baby, even if it ended up being as useful as a screen door on a battleship.

    Though it looks like a piece of crap I actually do see a potential outlet for something like this, people with motor issues. You know the same people who need text-to-speech devices and use those motorized wheelchairs. Where they have enough motor control that they aren't completely reliant on someone else for help, but are limited enough they might not be able to extend their arms to the full extent of a mouse. I suppose a laptops trackpad works just as well, but it just occurred to me that's one specific situation I could see this thing having potential for.

    • @73hhK41
      @73hhK41 5 лет назад +3

      I think in the case you describe, a trackball would work better than the device in the video. It also seems a laptop trackpad would be a better alternative.

    I used one of these for years with my Mac. Loved it and regretted when the company faded away. My model was simpler than the version you use here; it was like the one in the photo -- roughly rectangular in shape and with just one button. Absolute positioning was more natural for me than the relative positioning you get with a mouse.
    If I recall correctly, the moving bit was called a 'puck'.

    I was thinking, maybe this is for disabled people? I've seen people use their faces or elbows to use trackballs and stuff, obviously there are more options now like special hardware and software but back then this was probably designed with disabled users in mind

    • @arthas640
      @arthas640 6 лет назад +5

      I've heard that's what it was originally developed for, and I saw trackballs advertised in chiropractors offices and doctors offices, but it also became popular with people who thought it would prevent carpal tunnel syndrome, which was a serious problem with early non-ergonomic computer hardware and desks. I've _also_ heard that it didnt really impact the effects of carpal tunnel and with some trackballs it made it worse since you hand to move your hand in weird ways.

      @@arthas640 I don't get thumb trackball mice nowadays. Briefly worked at a place where some of the computers had this and I feel like it was going to make my thumb sore, so I tried to avoid long term use with them. My thumbs get sore enough as is.

      I always wanted to find an old very 80s looking computer to gut an replace the internals with modern high performance gaming pc hardware. I would use a non functional machine of course as I'd feel like a muderer to kill a working device that old.

    I had something similar to this. Can't remember the brand, but it was a three button mouse mounted on a stick that moved around on a base, kind of like a weird joystick. I think you could also bend it slightly to get extra movement. I initially got it as tablets were really expensive at the time and I was looking for something that would allow for more precise drawing. It kinda worked for that.

    I was a tester for these when they were first introduced. They were kind of odd. I’m not surprised it didn’t catch on. During my testing I had just received it and the top piece had to be replaced already because one of the buttons didn’t work. The concept was that when you move the trackball to the corner it would go to Corresponding corner of your screen of your screen but it had a hard time with a bigger screen sizes.

    It reminds me of something I remember seeing in amiga magazines in the early 90s, a joystick/mouse hybrid that as far as I could tell was simply an analogue joystick, but the top looked like a classic rounded two button mouse, you basically held the joystick like you'd hold a mouse, except it's on top of an analogue joystick.
    Searching for it I found the Cheetah Tortoise, which is a similar concept, and also very odd and silly.

    Heh. I used to have two of these with our first PC back in the 90's. (probably still have it somewhere) From what I remember, the buttons on the first one stopped working maybe 6 months after we got it, and we were sent an (updated) replacement from Altra. Upon taking it apart, the fine wires that went into the "handle" had broken in multiple places. The second one worked until we stopped using it, but it began to get finicky and the cursor movement was erratic (buttons still worked, though!)

    I absolutely loove my trackball mouse, mine's very similar to the logitech in the vid but wireless and 5button. It's great not having to move it around, works amazing in tight spaces/on your lap/upside down/whatever. Obviously it's not ideal for gaming, especially when quick and exact input is required, I do switch to my oldskool wired mouse for those... but it's a pain having to clear space for a mouse each time.

    I recall seeing laptops that had a similar pointing device that popped out of the side. don't know how well it worked, but it didn't catch on in the portable market either.

    The square "track" reminds me of a square gate you used to find in arcade joysticks;
    Kind of like a mix between a trackball & a square-gate joystick :P

    The logo , i guess you could call it, at the bottom of the Felix looks like a Dell logo, at least at a glance

    I recall those in the Mac catalogs back in the 90s. Like Macmall, Mac Warehouse etc.

    I think calling this a trackball/mouse hybrid is a bit wrong. To me it sounds more like a joystick/mouse hybrid. Which I can't imagine working well..

      Not really. A joystick's stick stays in one spot and moves around a single axis. This doesn't, it acts like a normal mouse that you move around but inside a smaller square area, yet also stays stationary like a trackball mouse. Now, an actual joystick/mouse hybrid *does* exist though, like the _ICONtroller_ for instance which I'll be covering later on :)

      +Lazy Game Reviews the 3ds and I think Vita and some other handheld consoles use a slide-pad very similar to this instead of a thumbstick.

      The Vita does not use a slide pad. It uses regular analog thumbsticks, just obviously smaller. The 3DS does use a slide pad that has a similar concept to the video, but unlike the Felix, it centers itself and is rather comfortable.
