I think the ‘pockets that go nowhere’ on Rainbird rain pants are so you can access the pockets on the pants or shorts underneath them. Great video. My family is only just starting to get into hiking and your videos are a good source of info. Keep it up!
Hi Hayley, thank you for the awesome videos. What’s the name of that lulu t-shirt? I’m looking for a soft and quick drying option for the Overland in summer. Thank you
At lunch time take your gaiters, boots and socks off. Let your feet breathe and take the insoles of your boots out to dry too if the weather is co operating. MONT make Gore-Tex type over pants which are the best waterproof over pants I have owned . For white season XC ski touring they kick goals.
I really enjoy watching this video. I've booked a trip to Tasmania to do the Overland Track in Dec, so this is prepping me to pack smart. (Crossing my fingers that we would be able to fly out by then :s)
I'd never buy a down jacket or sleeping bag because here in New Zealand, anything you take hiking is going to get wet sooner or later (regardless of how "waterproof" the clothing is alleged to be) and down is garbage when it's wet Synthetic fill may be heavier, but it drains/dries quickly and keeps you warm.
thanks for the tips! do you find that you would need both fleece and waterproof gloves when doing winter tracks i.e the overland track? contemplating whether fleece would do as lighter and packable but it will be unpredictable weather on the OT and how many pairs of socks would you bring for a 5 day trip?
I think if you are going to use hiking poles the waterproof gloves are very welcomed as your hands feel exposed and icy when not in your pockets haha but in saying that the Overland Track is the only track I have brought along my waterproof gloves for, the rest of my winter trips have been just the fleece so you could get away with it. For socks I would say 2 or 3 pairs. (probably 3) Keep one pair always for camp when you are done for the day and then depends if you want a spare pair of hiking socks. I took a total of 3 pairs because I had intended of alternating them each day but I actually never ended up using my spare pair because the track was so wet haha.
I should have spoken about that. I definitely bring spare underwear haha. It changes depending on the length of the trip but I would bring probably 3 pairs and wash them in water along the way.

I'm doing the overland track in Nov! local here in Tassie
I'm following all Haylee's tips for the overland track haha
Thank you! :) Tassie seams to be pretty happy in their bubble watching the rest of us haha. I’ll cross my fingers for you too!

Is nylon+spandex pants ok for hiking in?
Yeah Nylon is quite often used in hiking pants (same with a bit of spandex or elastane) :)
What about underwear? Do you really carry only one panty?
I should have spoken about that. I definitely bring spare underwear haha. It changes depending on the length of the trip but I would bring probably 3 pairs and wash them in water along the way.
