The Qilin is an auspicious animal in ancient Chinese mythology, symbolising the people’s hopes of good fortune and safety. Many legends about the Qilin hail from Shandong, including “Encountering a Qilin in the West” and “The Child-giving Qilin”. In addition to being seen as a benevolent mythical beast, the Qilin is also a symbol of Confucianism.
This piece, commissioned by suona musician Liu Wenwen, made its debut in 2019. The style of Ode to Qilin is based on two traditions of Shandong, Luxinan Guchuiyue wind and percussion music, and Shandong Bangzi (Wooden Clapper Opera). The composer adopts musical variation techniques used to expand the scope of traditional music pieces to pay tribute to the Qilin, which has been acting as the guardian of humanity for millennia.

麒麟是中国古代神话中的瑞兽，它承载着⼈们对吉祥与平安的向往。众多有关麒麟的传说发源于山东，如“西狩获麟”、“麒麟送⼦”等，⼈们将它视为仁兽，同时也是儒家精神的象征。这⾸作品受唢呐演奏家刘雯雯委约创作、⾸演于2019年。乐曲的曲调风格取⾃于鲁西南⿎吹乐、山东梆⼦，运⽤传统旋律展衍的变奏⼿法创作，歌颂麒麟千百年来对⼈们的守护。
