  • Ye Raat Ye Fizayen, Phir Aayen Ya Na Aayen.
Aao Shama Bhujaake , Ham Aaj Dil Jalaayen ....
This song from movie "Batwara-1961" was composed by the composer "S. MADAN". How many of us remember his name ???. The answer is ''only a few".
By 7th decade HFM was stabilised in all its genres with presence of so many established composers. To compete with them was practically impossible for the new composers. Amongst many such entrants, S. MADAN was one who was born in 1922 in Moga (Punjab) and ''Batwara-1961" was his 1st hindi film as a music director. Earlier at the age of 20 in 1942, he assisted another lesser known legend "Vinod" (Lara Lappa ... Lara Lappa ... Lai Rakhda fame) and worked with him for many years till Vinod's death in 1959. After Vinod's death, he again assisted & worked with composer ''Aziz Hindi'' in films like 'Danka'. He composed few songs of Danka in Punjabi folk style and was later type casted as a Punjabi music composer as his music in Punjabi films like ''Mama Ji'' became hugely popular.
This duet song of Batwara-1961, sung by Rafi Saheb & Ashatai became an instant hit but as usual the film flopped on box office and like many other great composers, he didn't get his due in Hindi films and concentrated more on Punjabi films. The Hindi film music was bareft of this gifted composer due to high competition with already established composers. But it is also a fact that his songs composed for Punjabi films were plagiarized in Hindi films. You will be surprised to know that the popular song '' teri do takiyan di naukri mein mera laakhon ka saawan jaaye'' of Hindi film "Roti Kapda aur Makaan-1974" was originally composed by this composer way back in 1964 in his Punjabi film "Mama Ji" as ''Teri do takiya di naukri, Oh mera laakhon da saawan jaandha''.
Coming to this duet song of Batwara, just listen to the initial recitation of first line of its mukhda '' Ye raat Ye fizaayen, Fir aayen ya na aayen'' where Rafi Saheb just whispers 'Ye raat ye fizaayen' but surprisingly at 2nd or 3rd note contrary to the usual 1st note whisper. Furhermore, listen to the next line '' Fir aayen ya na aayen'' where Rafi Saeb crescends suddenly to very high notes, may be 5th or 6th note in the same whispering tone and finally descends down smoothly to the 2nd line of mukhda i.e. ''Aao samaa bhujake, ham aaj dil jalaayen''. This unusual but masterful beginning of this duet says all about the composer ''S. Madan'' & Allah ki aawaz ''Rafi Saheb''. Ashatai too sounds in her heavenly vocal tones.
The short, sweet & apt humming plus beautiful choral effects and just adequate instrumentation makes this composition ''JOIE DE VIVRE ''.
Note/Retro : The original 2nd line of mukhda ''Aao sama bhujake, ham aaj dil jalaayen'' written by Majrooh Saheb & recorded on HMV discs & tapes ... was objected to by the then Censor Board with the plea that this line would create much negative vibes in the society and people may commit some dreadful acts. Hence for on screen viewing, this line was later changed & rerecorded as '' Aao samaa jalake, Ham aaj milke gaayen". How funny it seems in today's times ??. But Censor Board was very strict & disciplined in those days.
Hence today on discs & records we hear '' Aao samaa bhujake, Ham aaj dil jalaayen'' and on screen we hear '' Aao samaa jalake, Ham aaj milke gaayen"
