Here in my town we have many stories of modernizing lift for absolutely NO REASON. Like this lift is from the 70s they modernized it after 40 years. Over here in my town we have a shopping mall that had the lifts installed in 1998 and some of them were modernized onto generic for absolutely NO REASON. Old lifts shouldn’t be modernized, they should be kept original to show the history and remind people of the old days.
Having spent 3 years at university with 3 simular old otis lifts in the library building I feel a bit diffrently about them. It was rare for all 3 of them to actually be working at any one time, there were times when all 3 were broken and I had to take 8 flights of stairs to get to where the books for my subject were, which when carrying a heavy bag of coursework and books was not fun. I was glad when they got modernised in my final year, they got upgraded to Otis 2000 style controls and machinery. I was very lucky that I got to see inside the machine room when the modernising was being carried out, one of the three lifts had not been done and so I was able to see the original control gear which consisted of a wardrobe sized cabonet containing lots of relays and valves and next to that was a mechaincal "selector" device, there was also a DC motor and generator. I suspect this antiquated control gear was the reason the lifts were broken so often and thus costly to repair and maintain. The modernised lifts had a much smaller cupboard containing transistor based logic boards and an AC motor. I was very lucky to catch one of the otis men about to dump the old car control panel in a skip, I gladly took it off his hands and I still have it here in my bedroom :). After the modernising the lifts were far more reliable.
The KONE ecodisc lift is a very good lift I like very much as it is one of my faverite lifts to ride, but its getting crazier without the old otis that I could cry for 1 Year every day in a row

After a year, the inspection came and they marveled at how they modernized the elevator and it was in front of them demodernized, and we were asked if it had been demodernized. At the time they were upset, but we soon said: "We after the modernization, we were always closed inside the elevator, so we keep history, and we are much safer" We lost the "Warranty", but at least we know that that elevator will never be modernized and will always be the original.
Even though the new Kone machinery is quieter and operationally smoother, in all likelihood like everything "new" these days, it's probably going to fall apart in very short order. I've worked on lifts for a couple years and new equipment and processor controllers failed pretty quickly and were often harder and more expensive to repair, usually not something easy to do in the field to get the lift back up in the same day. There's a very good reason they used relay logic and big motors, all of it is easy to maintain and quick to repair. It can take days to chase down modern elevator parts as there's now so little parts commonality with each brand and installation.

Well, the same story happened where I live. Every lifts were from the 70's, some were still running well, some others were stuck like every 2 weeks, and the modernisation wave passed. Before modernisation there were a lot of different brands: Otis, Kone, Westinghouse, Schindler and Fiam, now all the lifts in the west part are modded by Schindler, and all the lifts in the eastern part are modded by Kone. Kone kept the original motor in most cases though. a And just like in vour video there was an old Otis from the 70's with black buttons with the DC motor sounds and the relays. When I came back in January 2013 to film it, it was completely replaced: inner doors, stainless steel cab, and EcoDisc fixtures and motor.
+imaginox9 yep, as per my latest video... old lifts in public are as rare as rocking horse ***t! I know what you mean. Sometimes i see photos of the 70s and 80s. I remember the 80s as a kid... blocks of flats didn't have security doors and all lifts had character.... mostly a dark and scary character but now i wish i could go back in time and see them as they were.
Is it me or do people in the UK just modernize their equipment for compliance reasons or just to upgrade? Here in the US, at least where I am, elevators (lifts) don't get modernized unless they absolutely have to. The ADA specifies that unless major remodeling work is being done they don't have to comply 100%. Friend of mine who works for Otis service told me that almost 60% of what he works on is still relay logic. Oldest one in service that he worked on until recently was at the old Yorktown Hotel in downtown York, PA. Installed in 1928, it was still in service until 4 months ago. Upgraded in the 60's to touch sensitive buttons, and new control cabinets, but still in service as it was. Only reason it will be modernized is because the hotel is going through a multi-million dollar renovation. Otherwise stuff here is still old. Go to the old courthouse, original elevators that were installed in the 40's. Parking garages, Dover hydro's from the late 70's. Downtown YMCA has an Otis from the 60's in it that is still in service as a staff elevator. Thankfully we don't really have talking lifts here, they would get on my nerves. I understand why we have them, but man, they are annoying. Most of ours just chime per floor. Many will chime the floor they are on, ie 3rd floor, 3 chimes when the doors open. I love that old Otis. You know its from the late 60's early 70's by the triangle over the i. Those are the only ones I have ever seen the Otis arrow as part of the logo, always thought that was cool! Too bad that ones gone now :(
I'm actually on holiday in Florida right now! Yeah, I think I prefer the floor bleep instead of the announcements like in the UK. In the UK, the talking I suppose is an excuse to increase the installation costs. All modern day lifts talk in the UK, I mean, they tell you "doors opening" when it's blatantly obvious they are opening! Regarding old lifts, it could be that engineers that understand how they work and how to repair them are also becoming rare! The Express DMR video that I did ages ago (search youtube for "Express DMR Lift") - that got ripped out because the only engineer that knew how it worked retired!! All the engineers used to hate going to it because they didn't know how to fix it. It's a shame, but as soon as an old lift goes wrong, then the customer no doubt gets a quote to replace it rather than repair it! It's a shame, but just the way it goes I guess. Thanks for the message and glad to hear that in the US you still have engineers that are willing to keep the old lifts working! Matt
Just as a side note, that wavy effect full screen and 720p may make some people nauseous lol I understand the effect and persevered through it. Loved it though :)
Here, two years ago, the put out of service the oldest subway we have in service. This line run on 99 year old cars. Those cars were refurbished a couple of times, the concept, details, finishing and character was truly 99-year old. I use to enjoy them so much, I liked those trains since I was a child, They keep up with the insane growing demand till 2014. They put a serious fight, fight to keep the service going, fight to the time itself, fighting careless people. its last day, as any other day, the run, for the last time, people keep filming all day long. By the end of the day even more people was gathered in the stations, many filming, all talking about this trains, and its memories. sometimes things just come to an end 2 months later, new CHARACTERLESS trains were running. With exception of two times I was in a hurry, never took this subway again, its is useless to me. People doesnt enjoy this simple everyday-things, til they are gone. You video remaind me much to this situation. Cheers
Rex Cletus Sure I did. But after 99 years of non stop running, every day, it is not like any other train ans it was moving , not for me but for many others, and even newspapers and TV. Of course, is a piece of iron, and as put, things always come to an end. So, it didnt hurt me at all, but it was "moving" anyways. You need to get the big picture, appart of the fact that, is just iron and wires and relays and motors.
I was afraid it was modernized the way you worded it in the previous video. I miss the old motor and motor generator. It sounds like you didn't check up on the abandoned elevators in the parking garage a fourth time?
I think that the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford has (or at least had) lifts more like the old one that is now missing. I'll see if I can get some of the staff I know there to take some pictures of what is there now.
Thomas Thorne That would be cool, thanks :) I'm not too far away from Guildford, if I'm in that area then I may check it out - which part of the hospital 'were' they in? Bet they're not there now though ;)
It was through the main doors, turn right, end of corridor right again then the main lefts were on the left. I think there is a second set to the left as you got in the main entrance but I have never been that way.
0:50 to 0:55 Good music choice Matt:) Sad that the council has ripped off the old OTIS...This is also happening in Singapore though some are modded but the cab is still spared(Examples:Block 307 and 311 Tampines and Blk. 4 Joo Chiat Complex) Usually, those *Censored* people just mod elevators without the thinking of heritage(history) but luckily is a good mod and not those STUPID Stannah-rish crap:)
Thanks, everything has to be 'royalty free' now. Gone are the days where you can use any music but think is music fits the scene. If I am planning a movie with music involved, the music is the place to start, then fit your movie editing around the music. If you edit the movie and THEN apply the music then nothing fits and the result is no where near as good.
I spend a lot of time deciding which music would fit a video, and even more time tweaking movies so that music matches different scenes. For example, if you see 4:10 notice how the music dies down just before the lift chimes when it arrives + when the first music ends when I'm at top floor at motor room.
I wonder if the Old Otis used to break down all of the time. That could have been a reason to get rid of it. If you have to constantly fix an elevator, then it wastes money so they probably modded it because it broke down all of the time. Idk 4 sure though
You are right, but also add that newer engineers are not used to diagnosing faults on older systems, so the knowledge of how to fix the old lifts becomes a factor to modernise lifts. Also availability of old parts, and companies obviously make more money modernising them!
Was you really sad when you found out about the old Otis lift getting ripped out i hate when the elevator companies modernize the old elevator cause it takes away the character from the old lifts and i love riding elevators myself but sometimes new tech is good but i miss old tech like old elevators and did you ever film the elevator when it was still there and put it on RUclips rip 70s classic Otis lift you'll not be forgotten

And just like in vour video there was an old Otis from the 70's with black buttons with the DC motor sounds and the relays.
Matt
:):):):):):):)(:)(:)
R I P Old Otis :’’’’’’’(
The old lift would have been better, but at least it's a KONE and not a generic
still 'yuck' to me haha Bring back the old scary Otis!
yeah I wish it was still original but hey, the mod could have been much, much, MUCH worse than what it is
But it would've been a different story if Mitsubishi "butchered" the old OTIS instead.
Just as a side note, that wavy effect full screen and 720p may make some people nauseous lol
I understand the effect and persevered through it. Loved it though :)
ah cool lol! Yes, the wavy lines were supposed to depict a memory or dream of how it used to be, glad you interpreted it correctly :)
Cheers
Its a train. Get over it.
It ran great! I would have lasted another 50 years!
I was afraid it was modernized the way you worded it in the previous video. I miss the old motor and motor generator. It sounds like you didn't check up on the abandoned elevators in the parking garage a fourth time?
might have done ;) wait and see
I cry every time
:) :(
Seems like the original door frame remains
They better revive the old lift
i love the kone one
Happened to me, An old Montgomery, now gone
My lift now talks to me. it didn't used to talk to me, I was once able to tell what floor I was at simply by pressing the button. WTF is going on?
+trip2themoon computers are taking over
***** haha bad puns for days
I think Beno won this as it is now an ecodisc
But he would have liked it more before it was modernised...
Rest in peace
0:50 to 0:55
Good music choice Matt:)
Sad that the council has ripped off the old OTIS...This is also happening in Singapore though some are modded but the cab is still spared(Examples:Block 307 and 311 Tampines and Blk. 4 Joo Chiat Complex)
Usually, those *Censored* people just mod elevators without the thinking of heritage(history) but luckily is a good mod and not those STUPID Stannah-rish crap:)
For example, if you see 4:10 notice how the music dies down just before the lift chimes when it arrives + when the first music ends when I'm at top floor at motor room.
mrmattandmrchay And what is the title of the sound effect @ 0:50 ?
mrmattandmrchay me to lol
Now kone is gonna loose it's reputation
Ecodiscs are VERY reliable
R.i.p 1970s lift but at least it's a kone
At least the new lift is a KONE and not a crappy generic. And you were able to get a good video of the old OTIS in 2009 before it was replaced.
Exactly! So glad I filmed the old Otis when I did.
I thought that it was 2010. He must have typed in the wrong year by mistake. At least its a good lift company who modernised it
can I have the link too that video
@@JoeCrofturl5000 The video was posted in 2010
Nooo! I want to cry!😢😭
So funny everytime you see a modernised lift. Everybody is happy its updated so no out of orders so often anymore. :-)
you do not modernise old lifts. you repair and maintain them, but you do not modernise them
my brother owen has been in an old otis lift at honey lands house it was the same old otis lift but with pressure bars
You've got me hooked on your videos,I've subscribed but please be careful.
RIP old otis
Great 'Tounge In Cheek' editing :-)
Shame that it got modded.
Thanks :)
3:07 According to the sign: The motor room still had equipment inside it!!!
Not any more. I contacted the maintenance guy there. Room is empty. Equipment removed :(
I love the new mod it is better then the horrible old lift KONE RULE
Shut up.
WHOEVER LOVES NEW STUFF OVER OLD STUFF IS A SHITTY PERSON!!!
At least it got replaced with an Ecodisc rather than a crappy generic.
R.I.P that Otis it was good but I like KONE EcoDisc better
Otis are the very very best of the best elite, and if I had my own way all the lifts would be Otis.
Richard Pearson in the 60s and 70s maybe but not now but that’s just my opinion
Was you really sad when you found out about the old Otis lift getting ripped out i hate when the elevator companies modernize the old elevator cause it takes away the character from the old lifts and i love riding elevators myself but sometimes new tech is good but i miss old tech like old elevators and did you ever film the elevator when it was still there and put it on RUclips rip 70s classic Otis lift you'll not be forgotten
It's an ecodisc!
+Casper the epic cat. All I care about is it isn't an old Otis any more WHAAAAAAA!!!
i love lifts
I've never had a ride in an old Otis.
the new modernised lift is a kone but did you know that there lifts save power you may know them as kone eco disc they are my favourite lifts but I did sort of like that old lift but the problem is these company's want to get read of these old lifts and fit there new lifts in there but not all the time the same company will modernise but I did like this video it was not boring at all.
Rip Otis lift 43 years of Otis lift!
Nope, in 1853, Otis was established by elisha otis
At least they replaced it with a good lift.
rip otis lift ;[ ''HOW DARE THEY.'' HASHTAG HOW DARE THEY COMMENT GROUP
Otis lifts are one my favourite lifts
Yep, me too, but only the old ones. Looking at the old motor rooms like this one...
ruclips.net/video/M1vb-sm8Dcg/видео.html
...fascinating design!
i likeold otis lifts what a shame why did they modernized the old otis lift i was going to video the original otis lift
NOOOOOOOO! THE 1970S OTIS LIFT IS NOW MODERNISED!!!! WHY DID THEY HAVE TO MODERNISE THE LIFT?!!?!?!? THE NICE OLD FEATURES,THE OLD BUTTONS, THE MOTOR ALL GONE ☹️☹️☹️😭😭😭
Arnt modernised lifts safer?
All-in-all, probably yes :)
the modernisers were a evil lot. they destroyed a valuable piece of classic Otis lift history.there needs to be a lift preservation society set up, a charity which would make it illegal to modernise old lifts. old lifts are a piece of british heritage and old history.
5th floor button already replaced.
R.I.P old otis lift. now modernised by kone :'-(
MEGA SAD 😭
I hate KONE these lifts looks so ugly. I love OTIS in the 70s they make so good lifts these days too
I only have an interest for old lifts
