  • RV Tire Blowout | How Much Damage Did Our New Travel Trailer Take??
    We had our first tire blowout on our new trailer the last day of our cross country trip. We have done this cross country trip two other times before in our previous trailer with no problems so we had never experienced a tire blowout previously. We were shocked to see what damage was sustained by the trailer when we blew a tire and wanted to share our experience! If you have had a similar experience with damage to your RV, please comment down below!

    We had a blowout a couple of months ago to our Alpha Wolf it did $10,000 years worth of damage. New trailer by the way. We are still working with the insurance to get a repair. We are full time rv so figuring out the logistics is difficult. Well now I am sitting on the side of the road with another blow out and extensive damage on the other side. I am so over this. You would think they could come up with a better tire in 2023! What kind of tires did you end up going with?.

      I am so sorry to hear that has happened to you twice! It took us forever to get ours fixed due to parts not being available. It was well over a year. We went with E rated Goodyear Endurance tires on the trailer in this video. Thankfully, Grand Design did start putting better tires on at least some of their RVs. We now have a 2023 Grand Design 2910 BH that came with Goodyear tires. They have been great on both trailers, no more issues. Good luck to you, I hope you are able to get yours fixed and don't have to go through this again!

      Update we found out there are thousands of complaints against this tire and Forest River. Yet they keep on selling them on their trailers. They know how dangerous this is and could careless. We came so close to losing total control the first time. I am glad to be here to tell this story. I don’t want this to happen to anyone else.

    The speed rating on a tire is not the speed you can travel. The speed rate is only based on that top speed for a maximum of 30 minutes. Yes speed rating is base on 30 minutes of continuous top speed. Going 70mph with a trailer is too fast you might consider not going over 65mph. Glad no one got hurt.

    • @AliciaLynnYT
      @AliciaLynnYT  Год назад

      Makes sense about the speed rating. I don't recall whether we said in this video or not, but we bought better tires and also drive slower now.

    I would highly recommend to go to a heavier grade tire - those are Grade C - And should of been a grade D... Manufactures only put on the bare minimum and really need too go back to school and rethink there weights. I own a 1988 Prowler Regal and Up graded my tires to a grade D rating And my trailer is a heavy unit 6500 dry to {7200 LBS when fully Loaded}
    So it might be good for you to do that as well and AND take in to account the AGE of the tire The code date on which it was manufactured and replace your tires when they approach 6 years That is very important...

    • @AliciaLynnYT
      @AliciaLynnYT  Месяц назад

      After this experience, we went with E rated Goodyear Endurance tires on the trailer. No problems after that. Good tip on age of tires! Our trailer was pretty new at the time this happened, so I would expect that the tires were as well, but maybe not.

    I just ran across your video when u had the blow out on ur new trailer. The Chinese company that made them had to recall over 450,000 tires because of tread coming off at highway speeds, it was responsible for at least 2 deaths. The tires were made for cars, light pickups, vans, and trailers. It is my understanding that Grand Design no longer uses those tires.

    • @AliciaLynnYT

      Thanks for the info. That is really sad that it sounds like people had to die before anything changed. We now have a 2023 Grand Design 2910 BH that came with Goodyear tires. Not all of the GD trailers did have them at the time we bought ours, some still had Chinese tires. Sounds like they do now. Glad to hear it.

    We have exactly same RV just outside Lake Murray SC from East TN. I stay at 65-70 mph our trailer is ‘21 model SAME EXACT tires… blew passengers side torn the skirting off. Tire completely came apart. Had it replaced on the road shoulder went approx 5 miles and the drivers side tire blew.. both tires were what I’d call a catastrophic blow out lots of damage to that side also…
    We we’re 40 miles from our campsite….
    I’d say Grand Design needs to reconsider A BETTER TIRE CHOICE… I’m sure we’ve got $5-10k in damages… plus all the money it took for replacement and roadside service… it’s was hell to say the least. Will see how the Insurance makes good …on this. I thought I maintained these tires only being 2.5 years old.. found out dry rot had set in and we even keep
    It stored indoors climate controlled… so much for that.

      So sorry to hear this happened to you, too. I think they must have gotten some heat over the tires they were using because Grand Design did start putting better tires on at least some of their RVs. Enjoyed your video on the 2910BH! I am seriously buying one too. I'm curious as to what your tow vehicle is. I will be pulling it with a GMC Sierra Denali which is rated for 9200 lbs. The trailer is within its capabilities but I wanted to see if you are pulling it with a half ton truck and if so what your thoughts are related to pulling it especially in mountains. Thanks!

    • @AliciaLynnYT
      @AliciaLynnYT  Год назад

      Thank you! We have a 3/4 ton truck to tow ours. We can tell a difference in towing this trailer compared to our previous lighter 2400bh. You can tell it's a heavier load. The gross weight on the 2910bh is just under 9000 lbs, so 9200 is getting pretty close to the max, which would probably be pushing it. Especially in the mountains. That's just our personal opinion, though. Good luck to you in your ventures!

    Hello! This just happened to me today, coming back from Sequoia NP to our home near Joshua Tree NP. Outside temps went from 70 in the morning to 105 driving through the desert. I didn’t even notice this happened or where it happened until I pulled up to a stoplight as I was entering my Yucca Valley and someone flagged to tell me. 2021 imagine 2400 BH. Blew out same tire, and blew out the undercarriage at the door just like yours. I was driving with my two young girls , so glad nothing catastrophic happened. Hopefully insurance will cover. Other than tossing the Westlakes for better tires, any advice or other lessons learned since this happened to you?

I upgraded to Goodyear Endurance and wow just feel the side walls off rim and you well be shocked how flimsy and thin those westlake tires are. I’m so sorry this happened to you guys. We’ve had campers for 20 years and never had a blow out until last year (with our newest and best condition camper we’ve ever owned) and we ended up with the same scenario on our way up to Maine. It was terrible. The damage wasn’t as bad ( nothing inside the camper) but bad enough. And the traffic was ridiculous. I was so scared for my husband trying to change it at 5pm heading into Maine. This is one of the major things that stresses me out about traveling with a camper! I’m so glad you are all ok though. Very scary thing.

    We full time RVers call the tires that manufacturers put on rigs China Bombs. Best advise we ever had was to replace the tires. Of course we didn’t and we also had a blowout. It did almost $2000 worth of damage. Luckily our insurance covered the damage. When we had new tires put on our trailer we were told they did not need to be balanced. Have them balanced anyway or they will wear unevenly. Enjoy your trailer. We certainly have.

    Just had the same thing happen Tuesday. The flapping tread that came off the tire ripped a 4 foot long hole above the tire, it ripped the furnace out that sitting right above the floor along with wiring, damaged the cupboards. I suggest paying the extra $$$ for 10 or 12 ply LT (Light Truck tires) even if you have to buy new wheels 16 inch wheels instead of the 15 inch trailer wheels which have limited truck tire availability.

      @@AliciaLynnYT Thanks. I doubt we will be able to use our 5th wheel again this season also. We have to bring it to dealer next Tuesday to be repaired. From photos of the damage we sent to dealer, he believes the repair bill will exceed $9,000. Fortunately, our insurance deductible is $500 but the insurance adjuster still has to assess it also. Fingers crossed that our insurance covers it. Another suggestion I have implemented on the new tires I installed before we take it to the dealer are TPMS sensors in the wheels of the new tires. I didn't want to risk getting another tire failure on my way to dealer. By monitoring tire pressure changes, we have a better chance of pulling over to the side of the road BEFORE a catastrophic tire failure. These particular sensors monitor air pressure AND tire temperature. TPMS are a great insurance strategy in my opinion. www.technorv.com/tst-cap-system-with-2-to-12-sensors/

    Glad everyone is okay. Scary stuff for sure. I immediately replaced the D rated Westlakes on our 2021 GD 2400 with E rated Goodyear Endurance tires. Dealer thought I was crazy but I was hearing about too many instances of these China bombs blowing without warning. Glad I made the change. The E rated 225’s fit fine on our 2400-radius is about 3/4 inch taller than the 205 original size tire. I’ve heard GD is installing the Goodyear tires on new production trailers now.

    You guys need a tire monitoring system. It seems that temperature changes can be so drastic on tires that you can easily surpass the rated pressure and blow your tire. You can blame the tire, and sure you can spend more money on a higher rating tires but the basics are that you need to keep constantly checking tires, specially if the temperature outside changes drastically.

    I am sorry that this has happened to you. Hope you have made progress on the repairs. This is a classic "China Bombs" tire blow out. I am amazed that there are not more views on this subject. I would recommend getting the new Load Range E Goodyear Endurance trailer tires that are made in USA (Alabama). (Just noticed a comment below that you already put Goodyear tires on the trailer.) A TPMS system is also helpful for temperature and pressure. Coincidentally, Long Long Honeymoon RUclips channel just put out a video on using LT (Michelin) truck tires, however, a 16" wheel would be need too. BTW, I agree on the solid steps are a PIA with getting dirt and water inside your camper. I normally do not go faster than 65 mph while towing. Higher speeds can cause accidents and certainly reduces fuel economy.

      Thank you, I am just happy we didn't have a worse outcome. We are still waiting on the parts to get the floor damage fixed but have been able to use the trailer, so that's good. I'm convinced this was a classic "China Bombs" case myself just based on the circumstances. Hopefully the new Goodyear Endurance tires are much better. I love that they are made in the USA, I didn't know it was Alabama! I kept seeing those come up as the most recommended so that's what we went with. I think the TPMS is a good idea too as well as keeping it under 65 mph. I got a lot of flak for complaining about those steps in either this video or another one so I'm happy to hear we are not the only ones that think they are a PIA! Lol Thanks for watching!

    This happened to me a few days ago on the way back from Florida. Ripped out electrical cable which controls the slide. Repair place said as much as $6000 to fix because the slide may have to be manually disassembled. Insurance should cover but this happens way too often with the cheap tires the manufacturers put on campers. Need a grass roots movement from RVers to petition Congress to have safety standards. Not the leader type but I'll help with it.

    Wow, I can't believe the damage that one tire can cause! I have to say this...knock on wood, I've never had a blowout with our travel trailer...yet. I know it's a good possibility, though. One thing I always make sure before I travel is that the pressure is right at 65 psi for my tires. I had a tire guy tell me that if you run these ST tires lower than they are supposed to be, you are treading on water. Another thing I don't do is travel more than 60 mph, even on interstates. I set my cruise at 60 mph and that's where it stays. If I'm on a state road, I'll pull over and let traffic go by before I even think about speeding up. I've had China bombs on my travel trailer's and never had a problem yet. In addition, I carry 2 spare tires with me. I figure if one goes, it might take the other tire out, too. Glad you guys were OK and I feel bad about the damage to the floor. That is incredible!

    This blowout happened on your last from getting home with approximately 4600 miles as you stated. Now add the mileage from the Grand Design Factory to the dealership where you purchased it , driving it home and any other miles you put on it. Additionally what is the D.O.T. Date of the tires?
    Common knowledge is RV tires made in China are basically junk ( a way for RV manufacturers to keep the cost down). Only you know how many miles were one these tires before you started your cross country trip and only you know why you DIDN’T purchase 4 new Goodyear Endurance tires for about $625.00 mounted and balanced BEFORE you started your trip. No sympathy from me.
    Peace. Tucson Jack.

      So the fact that junk tires are used by RV manufacturers is somehow our fault?? 😂😂😂 Nice!! And no, not everyone has the "common knowledge" that RV tires are China bombs which is why we did this video. We never had a single issue on our cross country trips before this with our other tires and we wanted to warn other people that might not know what can happen. You know, because we do have sympathy and empathy for others, unlike you. So thanks for your wonderful input and your lack of sympathy, Tucson Jack! Have a wonderful day, Jesus loves you!!
