Bruce Campbell's portrayal of Elvis is better than the guy in the Baz Lerman movie. Watch it with the commentary on. Bruce Campbell does it as Elvis and always stsys in character.
Mission impossible looked exactly like it did at the movies and was both tremendous audio/video maybe u gotta adjust settings or something. Also its top 3 in the franchise im my opinion
I did say this is more of a least favorites. None of the transfers I watched this year were bad really, but MI7 didn't live up to my expectations at all.
I agree with all the 4ks you mention except for Mission Impossible. I thought the transfer was good (the extras were disappointing), but the movie was good in my opinion and had some amazing action scenes.
I think he was hoping/expecting the whole thing would be amazing...I agree, it's good on 4K....but for the film overall and the disc neither are as good as Top Gun Maverick or MI: Fallout. I must admit, I was hoping to be blown away and wasn't.
You should do a video of top 10 Blu-ray’s from your collection you would like to see upgraded to 4K. They have to be ones you own that you would re-purchase if they received a new transfer.
The Exorcist was a great release. No other label would have done any more. There are some rough looking shots but that is the source material. Exorcist was and is must own.
My least favorite is Second Sights 4K release of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. They removed all the "dirt" that Tobe Hooper left in for his approved 40th anniversary transfer from 2014 and that is why I prefer the Dark Sky edition. Dark Sky took what Hooper approved and applied it to 4K with HDR.
I bought the Bubba Hotep 4K bundle from Shout so I could get my alt poster signed by tbe man himself. Bruce Campbell! One of the best moments of 2023 for me!
13:10 The biggest sins of The Exorcist 4K likely exist because of Friedkin's involvement, not in spite of it, so unfortunately a VinSyn release probably would've looked very similar, especially if they involved him, which he most certainly would've been.
For me it was Lost City Of Z 4k from Shout Factory. It had no additional special features from the Blu Ray and it didnt even come with a slip cover. I spent more than 50 dollars canadian on it. The blu ray I bet looked fine and it probably would have cost like less than 15 bucks. I should have just gotten the blu ray.
I didn’t care for Pumpkinhead. The transfer was fine, just didn’t think the movie lived up to the hype. Natural Born Killers was actually one of my favorite releases of the year. Great vids this year, looking forward to 2024!
The comments here show that most people are still ignorant and uneducated about what is or isn't a 'good' 4k transfer. They pop in a movie from 1972 and expect it to look like Oppenheimer.
Changeling easily a top 10 release. Excellent transfer. Excellent film. Great packaging. Some interesting takes you have. I do agree with some of them but not that one. You are entertaining.
The exorcist was a disappointment for me as well I was able to get it on sale for under 10 around the holidays….Ready to see your top 10 of the year keep up the great work
I detested Bubba Ho Tep when it originally came out. I expected something crazier and got these old men doing nothing. I watched it again after my father died and i got it, it really is about aging and letting go. It helped me come to terms with things especially the very end when that text comes up in the stars. I really like it now. It might land for you later.
I put in for my replacement disc the day you mentioned it in that video. I just got it in the mail like 2 weeks ago. Mind you, I never received any confirmation, follow up email, tracking number, nothing. It just randomly showed up in the mail one day in a bubble mailer. Glad I got it though!
Evil Dead Rise and Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning should not be on anybody’s short list of worst 4K releases… And you’re reasoning ( everyone’s entitled to there opinion ), is kinda silly. You change you’re criteria from the title “Worst”, to then say the title should really read “least favorite 4K of 2023”?

After watching this video I immediately loaded up Bubba Ho-Tep on Tubi, just to see what you were talking about. So I went in thinking I’d probably hate it but it honestly wasn’t that bad. I don't have any of the other 4k releases except The Exorcist, but I can certainly say it is by far my most disappointing 4k. It starts off great and then by the end it becomes a crazy blooming berry blue image and a grain reduced mess. My least favourite 2023 release on 4K is probably Snow White And The Seven Dwarves. My usual practice is to upgrade to 4K and hand the blu ray version in to a charity shop but I'm hanging on to the old blu ray version of this one. It's a far better viewing experience
You may not be aware, but Vinegar Syndrome released Witchcraft initially. I have their release of it on bluray. It's not great, but I do kind of like it. I'm more than happy with the standard bluray if most films, and Weird Science looks stunning in 1080p. I think maybe Mission Impossible didn't look as good as Maverick because there was way more CGI, which gives a more flat image unless it's done perfectly. Most of Maverick was practical effects, and they used top of the range cameras. The aerial scenes in Maverick look just incredible, even on standard bluray.
I have it on blu ray and I was surprised at what a terrible transfer that was; visuals looked as if I were watching a dvd, not anything approaching high-definition. A shame, because it’s actually my favorite live-action Robin Hood movie of all time!
So you think the HDR is a bit off on WEIRD SCIENCE? ROSEMARY'S BABY was a technicolor film and the Criterion version is more accurate; can't believe the audio got messed up. NATURAL BORN KILLERS was shot on 35mm film, then transferees to old analog tape, which is why it is off. THE EXORCIST is not always consistent, but I liked it better than not, plus the sound upgrade was impressive.
Calling changeling and mission impossible poor transfers???? Ken then do not get me wrong , if I am not mistaken you have an LG oled and if the TV is not calibrated it has issues with grainy transfers. That was the main reason I stick to Sony or Panasonic. You might want to refer to review of The movie collector. He reviews hi movies in a projector setup. That is how movies are meant to me seen , particularly if you have a large physical media collection. I still prefer to watch my movies on my 4k projector setup than on TV.
Hey Ken I’m actually surprised that you made this list of the “worst” because recently in one of your “best of” videos you said that some 4k movies have bad spots and bad areas and we just have to accept that if the OVERALL transfer is good. “ I mean I’m glad ur being critical of 4k I feel we should. I don’t feel like we should settle for crud just because it’s 4k and the 4k is SUPPOSED to be better. We wouldn’t have stood for it blu ray or DVD. So I guess I’m saying I’m glad your point of view is s different or slightly different in this video. Thank you
Yeah. To me there's a difference between a fantastic transfer with a couple of rough images and a mediocre throughout one with either the same couple bad spots or none at all. If the majority of the transfer is mind-blowing, I have to assume the best that could be done was. But if it's weak throughout, I have to wonder what the point was?
Bubba-hotep was and still is amazing for its budget. Definitely a product of its time but having recently watched it I gotta say it’s a good 4k transfer given its source.
I agree fully Ken. I skipped the Weird Science 4K and just kept my Blu-Ray edition. Fingers crossed that Conan is great as I don’t want to cancel it since I got the two pack box set for a good price. As to Mission Impossible DR I waited on this one and ended up watching it on Christmas Eve over at my uncle’s who did buy the 4K and I enjoyed the movie itself but the quality wasn’t up to par and I ended up getting it off iTunes the other day for $9.99 so I’m glad I waited on that one.
I think many transfers come down to source material. Take Twins Bluray from Shout. We all know how great Shout does with their titles. But Twins was not much better than the crappy DVD. Kino same thing. I have a couple of their BDs that were mediocre. So, I chalk it up to bad source material. As for Mission Impossible, I have not got the new one yet. You compared it to Top Gun Maverick. I think TG was overrated (4K wise). Being all digital, it was far from perfect IMO. Love the movie, but the 4K will never be in my top 10 list.
I thought the transfer was excellent on the Exorcist. It was just that hideous choice for cover art that Warner Brothers keeps picking out for their 4Ks. I wish that Warner Brothers would use the original poster art for it. Just like Universal did for the original Jurassic Park.
Oh great Witch trap sucks. Oh well at least I got it for free from a giveaway 😂 Now the only thing I agree with you about Natural born killers. Is that it definitely didn't need a 4k. I'm good with my Blu-ray. But it's my favorite Oliver Stone movie.
Yep. Hard to find people who realize evil dead rise in trash. Couldn't even figure out if one of the characters was a girl or a boy. How do you mess that up?
You say you like you grain Ken but you then don't like a couple of movies that have grain. 🤔 I too aren't a huge fan of Bubba Ho-tep but I didn't find anything wrong with the transfer. You sure your TV is set up right? 😉
I've seen several incredible transfers this year that blew me away. Why would those look great and these few not with the same TV settings? I rarely adjust, so that question makes no sense to me? All comes down to preference with the grain. Some looks so naturally integrated and balanced and some takes away from the picture to me.
@@midlevelmedia Is your TV calibrated? I sure hope you aren't using the default settings out of the box. That's a BIG no no. They have all the worst garbage turned on and the colors will look ridiculous. Every TV brand does this.
The Exorcist was a disappointment too in the transfer. That 4K Steelbook is very nice looking and it wasn't cheap. Scream Factory put out a lot of bad transfers of movies. I seek out movie review before buying.
@@PesterFester1966 If you look at the reviews a lot of other people have had similar issues. So it seems to be something on Sony's end that hasn't been fixed.
@@garyturley2435a lot of the movie is still dark, grainy, blurry, and out of focus; not sharp and detailed. Add to that the audio sync issues noticeable from the very first lines of dialogue in the film, which shows the lack of care or quality control that went into this release.
WOW! It's hard to believe that you and I can be so far apart on Bubba Ho-Tep (the movie, not the transfer). I am a huge Elvis, Bruce Campbell and Don Coscarelli fan and this movie is something they all could be proud of. You've liked movies that I did not, but this is one of the few that I love and you dislike. But I respect your opinion and agree to disagree.
I appreciate the way you handled your disagreement in this comment. And as with every movie I watch and dislike, I'm open to return to it to see if I change my mind at some point.
As to Bubba H-Tep, I've mentioned before that the blu-ray is fine, but it made no sense at all that Oz Davis claimed to be JFK. He clearly should have instead said he was MLK. Duh!
You don't like The Core man? WTF DUDE. Lol. Jk. I agree with about 6 of those that I got. I'd also add The Walking Dead Complete collection into biggest letdown of the year in packaging. That thing look plain and is an Epic failure of representation of the series. Can't believe they passed that for release.
Goddamn Ken...let me explain. Dead Reckoning doesnt look good because the last time you saw a M:I film on 4k it was fallout and it was shot with imax scenes. This movie had 0. Think about it. Cruise went to war with Nolan over imax screens. Oppenheimer was shot in imax....0 of dead reckoning was shot in imax. This goes over everyones heads because everyone took that battle serious like it wasnt a joke. 1 ticket gets u what u paid for the other gets u black bars on top and bottom of screen and shitty seats lol. Top gun also had imax scenes. These cameras are capable of 18k res. I always find it amusing when people get confused on why this movie looked better over the other in these situations. This is why hollywood can label every movie as a " see it in imax " and people bait into it. Napoleon...Killers of the flower moon....almost all super hero movies.....100s of others all in imax and give u 0 benefit. Absolute waste in imax.
@@bassage13 I say the movie Real Genius that came out in 4k this was a letdown no special features, one outtake, and nothing else they could not a lot more, but they when cheap, but it looks amazing in 4k
Nothing wrong with making a "worst" list. These studios can do better and could have done better and need to know so people don't keep losing money on their half-baked transfers and slim special features.

I've taken stuff back because it looked NO BETTER than a bluray and it pisses you off. Then I'll randomly watch some 4k and catch myself thinking "should I just stick with bluray? I'm tired of these games"

I mean I’m glad ur being critical of 4k I feel we should.
"Sam Raimi dressed as Elvis". Oh boy
I wonder if he actually thinks that or if he just messed up and meant to say Bruce Campbell.
@@bassage13 I'm hoping the latter
@@bassage13 I meant Bruce. Apologies.
I'd put money on Conan being great. Don't worry about that
I like Bubba Hotep. I was happy to spend the money on it. It's the King of B Movies playing the King of Rock and Roll.
AVPR has the same dark "lighting." You can't make anything out.
Only one of these I have is exorcist
I thought the transfer was excellent on the Exorcist. It was just that hideous choice for cover art that Warner Brothers keeps picking out for their 4Ks. I wish that Warner Brothers would use the original poster art for it. Just like Universal did for the original Jurassic Park.
Oh great Witch trap sucks. Oh well at least I got it for free from a giveaway 😂 Now the only thing I agree with you about Natural born killers. Is that it definitely didn't need a 4k. I'm good with my Blu-ray. But it's my favorite Oliver Stone movie.
I needed it because it gave me both cuts with Nine Inch Nails’ Burn where it belonged.
I also disliked evil dead rise but we're in the minority, ken, seems everyone else loved itn, and Ken i loved, loved your honesty
Yep. Hard to find people who realize evil dead rise in trash. Couldn't even figure out if one of the characters was a girl or a boy. How do you mess that up?
All I can be is honest. The internet can take it or leave it. Lol
Give it time it'll age like milk.
Natural Born Killers is a banger
I hear ya
Bubba Ho Tep, SACRILIDGE!!! one of my favourites
Opinions vary and I totally respect yours, but just know that you are wrong. Bubba Ho-Tep is awesome.😂
Why did you spend $32 on 4K Bubba Ho Tep if you hate it? Seems like a waste of money?
Blind buy and it was.
@@midlevelmedia oh ok. I thought you had seen it before and already hated it. That makes more sense
get a torrent and download these movies for free sir.@@midlevelmedia
Hahahaha this video was very entertaining!!! I do not approve of your review of Natural Born Killers 😂
Bubba Ho-Tep is a great movie
Ok. Lol
The Exorcist was a disappointment too in the transfer. That 4K Steelbook is very nice looking and it wasn't cheap. Scream Factory put out a lot of bad transfers of movies. I seek out movie review before buying.
Scream Factory has been on 🔥 all year.
Definitely disagree on most of these. The other few I haven’t watched yet on 4K so can’t say either way yet.
It happens
My least favorite 4k of the year was A Nightmare Before Christmas. One of my favorite movies, and the 4k has major audio issues on PS5.
Sounds like a PS5 problem. Get yourself a real 4K player. A cheap LG will be miles better than a cheap Sony.
@@bened22 Yeah, I know I should. I've just always used my game systems for years to play physical media and this is the first problem I've had.
Played it on my PS5 and your copy or console must be fooked up.
It could even be something on the back of the disc. 4K is very sensitive because the data is so densly packed.
@@PesterFester1966 If you look at the reviews a lot of other people have had similar issues. So it seems to be something on Sony's end that hasn't been fixed.
Rosemary's Baby is a masterpiece but it's absolutely irrevelant and unnecessary for 4k. Of course there would be no visible upgrade at all.
4K still looks better with HDR but just a tab bit.
Why is it 🤔 😐 😕
@@garyturley2435a lot of the movie is still dark, grainy, blurry, and out of focus; not sharp and detailed. Add to that the audio sync issues noticeable from the very first lines of dialogue in the film, which shows the lack of care or quality control that went into this release.
I thought Witch Trap was pretty funny - I watched it on laserdisc not 4k ;)
Bubba ho-tep I enjoyed it and found the bluray for 12.99 and I have a DVD copy it's just to laugh at in my opinion
Indy 5 and transformers sound quality was a let down.
Didn't watch either yet.
nobody knows less than ken
Thanks
Bubba Ho-Tep kicks ass.
As to Bubba H-Tep, I've mentioned before that the blu-ray is fine,
but it made no sense at all that Oz Davis claimed to be JFK.
He clearly should have instead said he was MLK. Duh!
I think that was supposed to be the irony of it. Meant for comedy, which didn't really land for me, but ok. Lol
Yes, The Core was trash, but how dare you talk badly about The Day After Tomorrow!!😂 And i like 2012 too! Even though it wasn’t great
You don't like The Core man?
WTF DUDE. Lol. Jk. I agree with about 6 of those that I got. I'd also add The Walking Dead Complete collection into biggest letdown of the year in packaging. That thing look plain and is an Epic failure of representation of the series. Can't believe they passed that for release.
Ohhh dang. I thought that packaging was cool. Lol
What about the best announcements of 2023!
I covered em all. Lol
I was really thought the REAL Genius wish came out in 4k was let down one outtake no special features, but look great in 4k
What the hell did you just say?
@@bassage13 I say the movie Real Genius that came out in 4k this was a letdown no special features, one outtake, and nothing else they could not a lot more, but they when cheap, but it looks amazing in 4k
YOU OUGHT TO KNOW CAUSE YOU ARE THE WORST😂
Nothing wrong with making a "worst" list. These studios can do better and could have done better and need to know so people don't keep losing money on their half-baked transfers and slim special features.
The Exorcist and Event Horizon were complete stinkers for me this year. Feels like a waste of money right now
Can we talk about the value of films, instead of bashing films!
You explain to me the value of Bubba Ho-Tep with a straight face and I'll talk about whatever you want! 😂
@@midlevelmedia a lot of people put their time, money, and sweat into films, I’m not just talking about Bubba Ho-Tep. We should be encouraging people to step outside of their comfort zone. Explore different things, not everything is for everyone.
@@Sampson.entertainment I did point out at the start of the video that these are more my least favorites and this channel is all about my opinion. That's the only reason I do this is to share my thoughts on movies and physical media. I would never discourage anyone from watching anything they're interested in.
@@midlevelmedia I remember you saying that. “The worst movies” thing just rubs me the wrong way, several people have come out with similar videos now.
Disagree with exorcist, evil dead rise, nbk, m:I-7. I can say I didn't like training day because it's not my fav Denzel movie, but it looks great. Same with the others, great transfer but acting took me out and didn't care about what was happening on screen. Why keep those around if you don't like them?
Because I have a problem. Lol
You should check your equipment. You're off base on some of these. Way off base. I really have to believe now you don't understand classic movies and the way they were filmed. Disappointing.
It's an opinion and preference.
That's it I am Unsubscribing to your channel Ken! Natural Born Killers is the best movie ever made! Just kidding. People are weird
😂😂
This guy has the absolute worst taste and opinions on movies in general. I tried really hard to give him a shot but It seems like it gets worse and worse.
Thank you for trying.
Youre too young to appreciate Natural Born Killers. The 4K looks just like the theatrical release. Its a beautiful transfer. Trippy FX and all.
I'm not too young to appreciate anything. I watched 30s and 40s films this year that I loved.
@midlevelmedia I only meant it in nostalgic way.
I'm 61 and saw Natural Born Killers in the theatre. I thought it sucked.
@@Ctophermon Yeah, I get that.
he is a FOOL on his movie reviews
Thanks
The core is rcist
I'm a sucker like so many others that keep the 4k gears turning in that I have that"blind faith" in thinking if it's on 4k it's automatically better. Wrong. I've taken stuff back because it looked NO BETTER than a bluray and it pisses you off. Then I'll randomly watch some 4k and catch myself thinking "should I just stick with bluray? I'm tired of these games"
I get that for sure. For the most part, I think this was the most worth it year for 4K upgrades that I've seen since starting to collect for the format. I've watched 150 4Ks this year and even this list was incredibly tough to make.
@@midlevelmedia Unfortunately, habits gotta change for me in '24. Change in work situation. It's okay, I got thousands of things to watch😂
The core is r4cist
Changeling sucked
Didn't suck. Just not really a horror film.
I havent watched core since cinema rekease its shit
No need to ever again.
I think you purposely picked some great 4k's just to get engagement on this video. 😆 and here I am leaving a comment and a dislike.
He did,you took the words right out of my mouth this dude is sick.He wants any attention, negative is fine also.He put up a video not an hour later after his peers just to contradict them.Atleast 2 or 3 films he made sure to trash because the people he calls friends Saud that they were good.Clown !
You guys may find this hard to believe, but I don't seek out negative comments. I made my list based on the releases I felt the most disappointment over. I really didn't watch much trash this year. Everything in 2023 was pretty good overall.
Terminator 2 should be on the worst list, regardless of the year.
Still haven't watched it
Rosemarys baby is overrated. The husband of the female lead is so bad. It’s like a soap opera from the 1960s.
