I think I would use a small, regular sized can of cream if mushroom, then add 1/2 can of while milk. The casserole would not be as salty yet it would be noise and a softer, not so "thick" consistency. I think for the amount of ground beef and veggies, this makes more sense!! But that is personal taste!! I love the tater tots on top!!! Wonderful!! (Oh less soup mix means less calories also.)

I make this for my elderly parents who are originally from Iowa (just South of Minnesota.) The big differences I see are a regular can of cream of mushroom (not that giant one) with 1 cup of milk so the sauces ends up thinner. Also, I'm lazy and just dump in frozen mixed vegetables and call it a win. Finally, instant potatoes rather than tater tots, but I admit; that does sound good. I add paprika.
Considering it is from a recipe card written out by my paternal grandmother (who was born in 1900) and put in a recipe box for my mother when they got married in 1960; well, it's been around for a while. I used to make a version of this many years ago when my nieces and nephew were little (I lived with my sister). Except that I used thawed frozen mixed veggies and cheddar cheese soup. My sister has passed, the kids are grown up and have their own lives, and since I now live on my own I haven't made it in years. Maybe I should make a half sized dish of this, it would make enough for leftovers for a few days. 👍💖😁

@@Katie-qb5vd I learned that if there were leftovers it was best to put them in a smaller baking dish to reheat it. That way the sauce on the sides didn't get baked on and be hard to clean. Plus it would help re-crisp the tots on top. You could also slide in a tray with more tots at the same time if, like what happened in our house, the tots would get picked off and devoured.

When I was in college and got my first apartment, all the ladies I worked with gave me recipe cards with recipes for cheap dishes that you could make easily and could eat for a week. While they weren’t called "hot dishes" (no one in Texas would know what a "hot dish" was back then), they were all these types of one-dish casserole meals. Meat, vegetables, canned soup, and either pasta or potatoes of some sort. Once I figured out the basic concept, I made all sorts of adaptations based around whatever flavors I wanted that week. I honestly learned how to cook starting out this way with these simple, straightforward dishes. I’ll still make something like this for big gatherings - making it all from scratch because I now hate those canned soups.

The scrap mixture was then pressed through what grandpa referred to as the “Holey Board”. A simple piece of wood with holes drilled in it. That is how the tater tot was born.

Just throw your leftover meat and vegetables into an oven proof dish and throw a can of cream of mushroom soup over it. Cover with cheese and breadcrumbs if you want to be fancy.

@@o3MTA3o I really want to try the tater tots though. Yes, I think that’s the only way for now 😊

Hotdish. Minnesotans say Hotdish not casserole. Same with cantelope. It's a musk melon.

I am getting some shepards pie vibes from this! I can't wait to try it myself.

I'm originally from Duluth, MN so I have had countless meals of tater tot hot dish. I have lived in Scotland for over 15 years and kept threatening that I'd make haggis tater tot hot dish, but never could because tater tots were not available here until the last couple years. Last year I finally did it. I used veggie haggis and it came out better than the traditional way.

Down south in Texas, we grew up calling this Shepard's pie.
