I bought a pair of these new from my College Bookstore back in 1978 for $270 (clearance price). Believe they weighed 57 pounds each, 6 Ohm.. The "Linear Phase" aspect of them was played up big time in the advertising at the time, and for good reason. That is why the fantastic tweeter on these is offset back from the 11.5 inch woofer on that cool looking black metal plate. Have not owned a better pair of speakers since. Big Bonus: The front port on the woofer section is large enough one could keep their "stash" inside the speaker!
My friend...Greetings from the US. I got into vintage audio because of you and love it, the sound is amazing, day and night when compared with the brand new chinese made yamahas and others. I got my japanese yamahas 1010/820, my sl 1200 mk2 and my technics sb k476 (american made). I cannot wait till morning to turn them on, even before making my coffee as you mentioned before. If I had to choose, I believe the sl 1200 mk2 is a killer machine, it looks like it will never stop delivering. Vintage japanese equipment is slick, minimalist look, awesome, an endless piece of art, it shows what we got lost, the proud of delivering greatness, not just good, on each product. I predict Vintage sound machines will get really pricy in a couple of years. Thumbs up my friend.
About the video below..... you should perceive levels...you will notice drums are not as loud as metal discs hitting one against the other..... so.... this is a reference to be used always..... testing your speakers, if one sound loud in drums, then it is boomy...if drum is long, it is loosen....if treble is too much harshing then you have bad tweeters...if treble is too much loud, then your speaker is out of ballance.... you should listen with a very good headphones, expensive and famous ones, to memorize how is the sound..then using the same sound (not song, the sound, focus into the sound, into the sonics) to compare speaker you will notice something...but always a reference gonna help you..... claps may sound as rain falling in a metalic roof, or a wooden roof, or a ceramic roof, depending your amplifier and depending your speaker...so...always the same amplifier and speaker as reference to "memorise" sonics of audio sequences...or same amplifier (in flat, no loudness, no filters) on headphones..better to inject audio direct into the power amplifier because pre amplifiers mess the whole thing.
Glad to have found you. I remember listening to this series of Technics speakers at the Düsseldorf HiFi fair in the late 70s. The biggest of them were two monsters about 1 m wide with a mid and a high frequency horn stacked on top of the bass cabinet. I think they were called the SB 10000. They played Boney M's "Rasputin" through them and it sounded spectacular, but far from delightful. Today I would enjoy to listen to these speakers with some good acoustic Jazz, but I have no idea if any of them still exist.
hi.. i m mur from Indonesia i was saw your review about this speaker. I was bought one week ago. That's correct the sound is so nice, the bass like heard in discotheque and the treble is so soft but is enaugh detail and the midrange sound is so strong.... I am happy to have it.... thanks bro..... nice review..
These speakers cost around 1500 Deutschmarks in 77, 1300 on sale end of 79. Corrected for inflation, that is 1381 Euros in "todays" money. For the pair. Typical earnings 1977 (average) was 1900 DM. So, the speakers cost +- the average monthly income.
I have the exact same speakers when i put on pink floyd welcome to the machine and turn it up the bass is so deep and loud especially at the beginning of the song. i would make a video of it but i don't think most speakers would be able to reproduce the sound these speakers make. Even my Infinity rs 3b speakers which sound amazing dont compare to this set of Technics. Also i purchased my set for 50 dollars a few years ago, luckily i knew exactly what they where so i snatched them up immediately.
***** Thanks for the positive input. I have a broad music taste, just try to keep everybody happy with the music I spin. The only music you will never hear in my video's is house and electronic dance....I just don't like that style. I think most my viewers don't like that style too. My favorite radio station is radio 10 gold, you can receive that station online too. I also spin dominican radio station on my pc with my headphone on. Because I like to hear the newest bachata and merengue songs. Most my viewers are between 35 and 55 years old, I know this because I have all the statistics on my channel. I also know that most my viewers come from america, only 8% of my viewers are female.....I often see that they make movies on youtube with the name bass i love you... All the time they spin that 1 song, bass I love you from basstronics... I think it's terrible too hear that song over and over again, just to show the viewers how the woofers react on that music. Although i hate those movies they have many viewers.. just don't understand why people can watch these movies, but thats me
Use high quality recorders and make recording...of water.... stream sound...rain sound...wind sound...birds singing sound.....your rain must sound alike rain falling and not sounding like eggs on very hot oil..... claps may sound as rain if your speaker is bad, or if you amplifier is bad...you know...you need reference...sound of clap...sound of rain....sound of water stream... real stuff...even eggs on oil.... water boiling...wind on leaves...thunderstorm..... real high fidelity stuff.
I found a pair of SB-6000A's at a Value Village here in Canada. You're right the bass is nice. My controls need cleaning and new caps as you say. Not bad for $80! Very very heavy though. Extremely heavy.
Freeze and fix all variables.... learn about your audio reference, your sound recording..memorize the sound, the audio...also fix an amplifier..the one you believe is the best (problem is you love loosen bass you will select unprecise bootstrapped amplifiers and then you will be lost)...after that you will be able to compare and evaluate speakers.... use other people to vote....do not say price or fame...just sound, do not let them see speakers...dark room....just music..you will be surprise how this changes evaluation because people goes to the ones are more expensive, more famous, taller, bigger, more shinny, more colours, more contrast....you know...beauty!....i am sure Jamo will beat many others under this kind of controlled test.... despite you and me love the loosen unprecise stronger ressonant dirty longer bass..... if you apply this test to you...not knowing....you will decide differently
america is very big on super high end stereos now everybodu buy real exspensive home systems but i still love vintage and europe so much very nice andrew i am all german backround have several vintage and new i hometheaters style stereos i own
Call ,a friend..... put claps to play and do not tell him this is claps.... use the part it is the same volume, not the end of the claps or he will discover that people is clapping...then ask what he is listening.....he may say it is rain falling on some place....this is because recording is not fine, or amplifier is not fine or speaker is not fine...so.... select a good recording and a good amplifier and keep it fixed..then compare speakers...got it?
Always check the foam..it uses to became greasy and can be destroyed fast....be carefull with vintage speaker with foam surround...well..you may know that.
Hi! I see you are using your Mp3 player. What quality are you using on the downloads? 128,256, 320kbit/s? (I i`m currently using Spotify on my iPhone whit the high quality setting 320kbit/s and it sounds so good!)
Hi vintage stereo you recommend the AU-317? or KA-7100 (only these model, more of that is very expensive, like the 717 here in argentina) Great vids!!!
FEGTTTSDH the kenwood is 60w/channel and the sansui is 50w channel. When the price is the same I would go for the sansui. But the kenwood is better looking. I love more the silver faceplate models for the looks. I however think the sansui will sound better.
I suggest you to spend some time searching for songs with quality...not songs you like..but songs that sounds good...songs that has quality...use Flac or something high quality, 320K or better than that...produce some standard songs to make comparison or we feel lost...do not test stuff with FM because sound of FM is not good..it is almost low quality.
Audio quality depends on the chain...the system...the audio you listen is a result of the worse equipment inside your audio chain....if you level stuff with FM quality, the speaker will not show beautifull treble, there's no beautifull treble in FM transmissions, all them will sound not fine, as FM is not fine...so, great speaker will not sound great with FM songs.. will sound like FM radio only..cannot make magic.... all depends on the audio source quality, and then amplifier quality and then speaker quality..if one of them is bad..then bad sound is what you gonna have..
ya nice vintage equip have freind from krakow poland does vintage stereo in new york keep up the good videos freind were is your accent from simaler to polish
great review Andrew. if you are going to sell one of those tuner/amps can you please let me know your ebay page/name so I can bid....please & thank you.
Select song with quality and make it your standard...it is not music you like....it is music that sounds good...good sound, not good music...then check everything with this same song...always..or you will not have reference and you will be lost.... i could perceive you perceive everything as crap.......but crap is the songs you use and terrible your method..as no fixed reference....so..if one song is good, and you listen speaker A with that song..then you like speaker A...another time you will not like speaker A.... always confused to you and to us to evaluate.
The local audio store only sold them for the list price. They would not haggle. They sounded better than everything else that was in the store. I found a warehouse in a local place going out of business that had a couple of pairs which they were selling for $420. At 17 years old, I could not afford them. But I bought them anyway. And I still have them! They still sound great.

Correction: 11.25 inch woofers. Sorry.

wow this is such a great comment, don't know what to say except thank you for the big support.
still waiting for a video on your channel where I can hear and see your setup,
you can still buy 1210 new, i used to work for a panaservice dealer in the early 90s before a 25 yr career of and on with bang and olufsen

I am an audio amplifier designer..... 54 years of experience listening, bullding, making comparison (blind A to B), creating audio studios and so on.
I am so glad to hear the opinion from a real pro who also have very good positive info, i learn a lot from your comments, thanks very much.
This is FABULOUS. God bless you

Really good looking and sounding speakers.
Hi sir! Do you know if the bottom section is separated from the bass chamber and works as a stand?
Use high quality recorders and make recording...of water.... stream sound...rain sound...wind sound...birds singing sound.....your rain must sound alike rain falling and not sounding like eggs on very hot oil..... claps may sound as rain if your speaker is bad, or if you amplifier is bad...you know...you need reference...sound of clap...sound of rain....sound of water stream... real stuff...even eggs on oil.... water boiling...wind on leaves...thunderstorm..... real high fidelity stuff.

i have sb5000 foam rings are still good! so i think these are very good quality foam rings from the factory
+Ryan Holkenbrink yes they are because most foam rings have to be changed after 25 years, these speakers are 35 years old
+vintage stereo These are rubber
hahahaha sorry mine arent foam or rubber
some type of fabric lol
The surrounds on 6000 and 7000 are rubber. I have never seen 5000.
yeah the fabric on mine that suspends it is also concave rather than convex like most foam or rubber surrounds.
Have these speakers, unfortunately one tweeter bit the dust. Been trying to find a replacment with no luck so I may part them out.
Part them out , and you are destroying a great peice of speaker history and value.just saying
america is very big on super high end stereos now everybodu buy real exspensive home systems but i still love vintage and europe so much very nice andrew i am all german backround have several vintage and new i hometheaters style stereos i own
+liljibi thx, vintage is the best

ik heb hier ook een luxman au-x501 staan met bijpassende tuner en niet werkende cd speler, volgens mij een dubbele cd.. is een 2x80 watt versterker

vintage stereo Yeah I think the same, the kenny looks pretty and the sansui sound is very famous. Thank you very much for getting me out doubts.
Wow even on the youtube that stereo sounds very dynamic resolving sound
i still watching your videos have not had time to comment keep up good work so much nicere european than america
PS, I guess my comment is for the Gentleman in the Technics SB6000 review video. Please pass it on to him. Thank you!
$340 in 1977 according to vintage technics database.
Bass is pronounced Base my friend, but no problem i was pronouncing it the same way 😊
nice! now I want a pair
