Thank you Dave for showing this tuner. As I mentioned in the last video (Kenwood KA-31), I have this exact same tuner. Imagine my delight when I saw your tuner doing the exact same thing as my tuner. I knew not to use any chemicals on the plates of the Variable Capacitor (Tuner). I did blow it out with compressed air in a can, but it still locked onto 1 station after it played perfectly fine for an unknown time, no matter how much you moved the dial. Sometimes it would magically come back to the frequency it was dialed in to after a random time. I'll definitely try cleaning it again, and tune it with the trimmer as it's definitely off. Love your videos. I learn more every time.
Look at the frame plates between the pickle slicers. There may be copper or brass plates that are slightly curved so as to put some tension on the main shaft which should be ground. Use a small and I mean SMALL amount of oil on them and see if it comes back to life. Also add a SMALL amount of oil to the outside ends where you might see ball bearings. I've had to do this SEVERAL times on various tuners and it worked every time :)
Hey Dave ....aka Mr. Grumpy , one lead of the antenna falls off at 8:30. Relax and just glad you are still with us. I have been busy here in Houston after the Derecho and hurricane Beryl tore the snot out of plenty of trees. Nuff said. I will get back to watching your video.
Put this system up for sale and it went within 1 day. 50 bucks in my pocket is better then 2 old stereo pieces collecting dust. My cost. 2 power cords.
G,day from Sydney Australia. Thank you for the demonstration to clean the plates of the turning capacitor, with compressed air only and turn the pot. 🌏🇦🇺
Dave! I watched your recent review on the Sequre Tweezer surface mount removal kit. I was so impressed, and ordered the same unit. Finally, a tool that can safely remove surface mount parts reducing the need for a hot air station.
Back? I haven't gone anywhere LOL. I work at my day job weekends and don't do any repairs or typically shoot videos those days. I post usually only tuesday wed and thurs. Sometimes sunday but since I also run a business that takes priority,
@@joeb2588 Please dont put our Dave through hell by making him fix tape drives, Tape in any form needs to be sent to the burning pits of hell, they serve no purpose today.
Thanks Dave. Our shop had few like that. He would spray TUNE-O-WASH in the cap and then blow it out with Canned Air. Cleaned them up good... TUNE-O-WASH worked wonders on Truck door hinges too. HAHAHAHAHA
Tune-O-Wash was pure TF solvent and hes it would completely dry. That was one of the first of the CFC banned chemicals because it burned a hole in the ozone, and here we are still belching crap from diesel engines.
@@12voltvids I still have a partial can some where. I snatched it up when the shop was remodeled to office space when that part of the business was closed up in 89 I think..
Used to own a Toshiba ST-U20L many moons ago, which operated in almost the same fashion as this, even down to the little LED on the dial pointer. I wonder if it's a Toshiba OEM?
My first thought is that a pigeon came to its resting or storage spot and created relief on the tuning capacitor (haha) but then I figured that would probaby only affect the F.M. band alone. I am not completely 100% sure on this one, though. Let's get into it! :) I would never ever use it for F.M. any longer, but my STR-7045 has low volume F.M, but otherwise is great and A.M. is great. I was told on a reputable and knowledgeable forum that the culprit is highly likely a single specific transistor. I haven't looked into it yet, due to the lack on interest in using radio.
Much prefer a proper tuning cap than vari-cap diodes. Although push-button pre-select needs a mechanism for units with a tuning cap I still feel like I have more control with a mechanical "air" tuning capacitor.
No, yesterday it was a power bump when the tree pruners dropped a branch across the primary and tripped an auto reset breaker so it went off for 5 seconds and came back on. The auto reset tries 3 times and then locks out because usually when a branch blows in the branch vaporizes. Where I am it is pretty good except in bird migration time. Lots of birds fly into wires and knock the power out a few times a year
I would of sprayed those micro farad capacitors with some electric spray (the disc grouping you see at the back): important and essential Pico farad even /:
CBC has too dam many positions on the dial. They are on 690 too. And then there are several french stations cluttering up the FM band. The one station I actually want to listen to 98.3 has to share a frequency with another station and where I am I am in the path where both come in, so I have to listen to the station online. I put it on a 100mw transmitter on 88.3 which is the only quiet place so I can listen around the house on a regulator.
@12voltvids probably the location that you're you're in close to saltwater acts as a conductor for radio waves in the fact that you're on South part of Vancouver you'll be getting part of the US signals you also going to get part of the signals coming out of Mount Seymour that's where your main transmitters are around there CBC probably transmits from that location in Vancouver we're talking about 30 miles difference suspecting you must be around White Rock or closer to that area you're getting signals from probably Victoria you getting signals from Vancouver Island Victoria the US and you getting signal from Canada Vancouver it all comes up once that's all you'll get two stations coming at once they managed to regulate part of the a.m. broadcast as you realize at night you'll have a.m. skip a lot more stations coming in FM is mainly line of sight what's a minor skip when I went down to Pender Island I was getting stations from the states stations from Canada something we're coming on top of each other yes the FM doll got a big clotted a.m. is more interesting money concerns dxing and yes 100 MW can go quite a bit of distance and depending on the type of antenna you're using I definitely enjoyed the videos I like the fact that you manage to clear that tuner excellent Sandy's old tuners sounds better than the newer ones

Another one saved from the smoking residue. I always hated the TV's we got from bars and lounges to repair. They were absolutely gross.
But remember what big tobacco used to say, that smoking was harmless.

I like this radio, its a dream to work on
Every part is accessible easily and its pretty decent quality to be honest
The falling down thing. I'm familiar with it. 😂😂
Great receiver.
"ya take it on the run Kenwood" 😸
Yeah that's right they did make their own for the UK market I bought that in 1985

Wow! I was actually right one time, @ 20:51, "I fixed it!" Yes, honestly, the bird analogy was intended for exactly what you did fix! Rock on!

Analog tuning is great. I have a shortwave with a tuning cap. Crystal controlled oscillator and VFO
Are you selling these products together since they are a pair? If so how much money in U S dollars
I already sold it for 50 for the pair
Do you folks where you live have a lot of power outages?

I live down in Olympia Wa. We have a pretty crapy grid, everytime you fart damm power goes out. @12voltvids
Nice fix
Back to PLL tuning no DSP chip garbage in that unit. -Cheers!
No PLL tuning in this one. This is a VFO
6:10 Funny, the music coming from the tuner sounds like Asha Boshle, legend who has the most recorded songs ever like 20 000 tracks or something.
your are close to Vancouver cool 730 am 1130 am cool Video
Im south of Vancouver right on the water.
Nice! Simple fix on this one.
I got a denon pma 6.5 but the amp has no power my mate might put a metter on it though but the cd player tape and tuner all go.

How do you make Holy water! God only knows, let me know won't you?

good simple fix
it's tape season, isn't it?
Put a plug on it, and plug it into the back of the amp!
nice 👏👏
like me you watch the video of flying wheel on youtube i found this funny more expensive in tesla then escalade lol
It just popped up in my feed after the burning lithium generator in la.
It looks like tuner with dual coils in discrimiminator and should produce sound with 0.05 THD purity, much better than cheap mass products with 0.2%
I don't always use a multimeter, but when I do I use a Fluke 12!
