Why heavily criticize the unit because of lack of touchscreen? The unit is being marketed to be use with your phone and StreamMagic as your remote. Plus, who wants to get up every time just to change the song/volume from the unit? No one… You seat, close your eyes and enjoy the music… that’s the whole point of it.
Device review priorities 1- Does it have HDMI ARC? 2- Does it have a touch screen? Well, let's continue to check the rest... Zooming in on a feature that is not necessary compared to the strengths of this device and is very tasteful.IMO
Looking at the comments, no-one wants a touch screen, long live buttons. I think your comment ramin3080 is in the same ball park, so I hope we are in agreement.
Well said. It's pointless and just a waste of money. Even the screen is pointless and so are the buttons. That's why the WiiM Amplifier is going to kill off this high end stuff.
Agree it's pointless. Like complaining a new TV isn't a touchscreen. If you have to get up and walk to it because the app or the remote are inadequate, that's a fail. The interaction model is the best touchscreens ever made.... The ones on your phone/ tablet.
I have a CXA81 so I am a big C.A. fan. Really enjoyed your take on the Evo 150. I continue to appreciate the post-review chat you two have. It has added an extra dimension to the typical “review”.
I've had an Atom for a couple of years and I just auditioned the EVO 150. For me the EVO sounds a bit more coherent and a little smoother than the Naim with a more convincing soundstage. I do find the Naim can be a bit fatiguing over a long listening session and while every individual instrument is ultra-clear they don't always knit together into a musical whole. Personally I couldn't care less about a touch screen as it would be at my waist height. The backlit Naim remote is rather lovely - especially the way it lights up when you move it :) There really isn't much between them functionally and in the end it's just down to personal preference on the sound. The EVO does have bass and treble controls which you'll be glad of if your tastes run to retro stuff like Television, Velvet Underground et al
I’m going to purchase the Evo hoping that it sounds good with the 705 S 2. just spoke to somebody on Crutchfield comparing the Evo up against another amplifier . Thanks again for your thoughts.
Hey Andrew! Very well done video! I just picked up rhe EVO 150 and paired it with my Dynaudio Emit 30's, they sound incredible! Very punchy, articulate and the soundstage is massive.
Many hifi enthusiasts still don’t like touchscreens. Personally I’m happy Cambridge still goes this way. Who wants a touch experience, has the full range of operability through the app via iOS or Android
The wife gets to pick the house. She can choose the colour of the walls, the floor, the curtains or blinds and the kitchen units. The bedsheets or the plates and the bathroom tiles. I don't care about any of that. I could live in a cave as long as I had my music system.
Guys that was a very long rant for a touch screen! It s not gonna change the way it sounds and Dirac live is the future much more than a touch screen. I had an M10. The sound is pretty good but similar of that of this Cambridge as you describe it. The big advantage of NAD is Dirac which a few reviewers have had time or will to explore properly. It is revolutionary in problematic rooms (most of our rooms) if someone spend the time to understand the room and Dirac itself since the basic curve leaves everyone unsatisfied with the bass(quantity). As per the touchscreen I might have touched it 2-3 times in the 2 years I had the M10 so if it s not desktop use I d say, whatever :). I predict that you will find the M10 a bit sterile too so I suggest to go deep into Dirac when you get it. Ciao
Great video! Only disagreement I have is regarding the touch screen - I have a Naim Nova, and initially also regretted the lack of touch screen until…. I started to notice the finger prints! I now think Naim and Cambridge are right with omitting the touch screen. The screen is meant to be looked at and not touched, and have unsightly finger prints all over it. It’s only my opinion of course!
Better not to have the touch screen. All Naim's streaming products area simply sublime, way...way ahead of the rest, thanks to their foray with the Atom that started it all. The Star even comes with CD! This Evo looks fine, checks all the boxes
Good morning! First, THANK YOU so much for tuning in to this review! I'm loving all of the back and forth. It would seem the EVO 150 (and 75) is a hot product right now and has sparked a lot of interest within the community and that is a GREAT THING! I wanted to write a group comment if you will to address a topic that seems to have divided the class -touchscreens. Many of you agree with me re: the EVO needing a touchscreen, and many of you do not. I can see and even appreciate both points of view and while many of you felt I may have made too big a deal out of touchscreens in this review, I'm afraid a little more discussion is needed. So here goes! To those who say touchscreens are unnecessary, and even "stupid" I get it. Your arguments against touchscreens are valid and in many respects I even agree with you, especially as it relates to App-based control. That said, here's why I believe a touchscreen is necessary on the EVO or any future hifi product. First, just because you may not see the need, the fact remains that among the younger generation touch-control has become the norm. Whether or not users choose to use touchscreens over the App is irrelevant for younger users expect and frankly demand to have that flexibility. Any argument against a touchscreen is somewhat akin to saying "Cambridge shouldn't include TIDAL support because more people use or prefer Spotify". That may make sense if you're a Spotify user, but quickly becomes a head scratcher if you're a TIDAL user like me. Second, if no one interacts with the physical unit itself, preferring instead to use the App or remote, why give it a screen, buttons or even any sort of physical controls at all? A lot of you have commented that you like the EVO's volume and input dial, two things that require you to TOUCH the unit itself. I'm sorry, but it is my opinion that if we're going to applaud a volume/control dial then we're discussing a device that is going to be touched and thus physical control of the unit is important. And if it's important I say, give it a touchscreen. Third, we often complain about the lack of physicality that permeates today's digital music culture. Interacting with a device such as the EVO and allowing for the virtual thumbing through of albums etc, brings some (emphasis on some) of that back -albeit in a different way. Lastly, and if for no other reason, the presence of a touchscreen would have been a BIG way for the EVO to differentiate itself from the crowd or at least some of the crowd. Is it necessary? No, of course it's not, but it wouldn't have hurt it either. I hope this helps clarify my thoughts and larger points that I (attempted) made in this video. I'm not leaving this comment in an attempt to convince you or bring you over to my side of the argument, I just wanted to clear up a few things. Thanks for taking time to read and to watch this video. We appreciate it! Be well everyone! -Andrew
You put across some good but invalid points. These units are all about their sound and so if the only reason to buy one is because it has a touch screen then you might as well get out of the audio game all together. These units should always be designed simply and without unnecessary, pointless and expensive signal paths and to a degree I believe the screen should be removed completely.
Not sure if this unit has this ability, but, and seeing how the screen is small, and there's usually a larger one close; wouldn't a way to send the screen info to a tv be a great idea or feature? Showing the info on a larger screen, would be a nice touch. Blu ray streamers have the ability, so it wouldn't be a huge feat to implement. Thoughts....?
@@andyh2215 these units are not at all only about sound. These are marketed for ease of use (all in one) and appearance. People buy a pre+power combo for pristine playback.
I just got the Evo 75 and paired it with my Sonus Faber Chameleon t, with the help of SVS PB-1000 and it is excellent. The sound is much better than with the B&K Amp 200.1 and Denon-800E network streamer. If I had known this before, I would buy the Evo a long time ago.
I have got both of these units here to compare, and I simply cannot understand how you guys concluded this. The EVO 150 is cleaner across the frequency spectrum, with clearly better bass definition, and smoother more natural sounding treble with a broader, more 3d soundstage than the Naim. It is dramatically more powerful and handles low impedance and inefficient speakers with ease where the Atom struggles. The Streammagic app is slicker and more responsive than the Naim app on my devices. The inclusion of chromecast on the EVO is also a significant advantage, particularly for Qobuz users.
Andrew and Kristi, youre starting my Sunday out good!!! Annnnd, I am in the class A camp too. Solidly. Neutrality or clinical sound is boring. Also, glad the biggest Mother's Day gift today is that your Momma is home and on her way to recovery. God bless her
That's a bizarre criticism: "give me less power but a touch screen" like no, I need power for my 150 W 8 ohm speakers... and my touch screen is an iPad. I don't want my amp full of finger prints. The clinical sound or other issues are fair though. I'm looking for a powerful enough amp (at least 120 W 8 ohm) with HDMI ARC and good streaming and USB audio. I don't see much that surpasses this... maybe the sound is not too great but other reviewers claim otherwise... not sure what to think.
A very good review. The key as you mentioned is go and listen to them - its going to be a personal preference. What music do you listen to, how loud is it going to be, and what speakers are you going to use, and even the room they will be used in. I had 90 mins in a listening room with my new speakers and both the Naim and the Cambridge audio units, and I liked the cleaner sharper sound the Evo 75 gave my music. The Naim felt warm, but the Evo gave me goose bumps. Touch screen - yes may be expecting that now for things with a price tag like this, but its not a deal breaker. I like the StreamMagic app it works around the way I listen to music - Spotify, Bluetooth to my PC, stream from my NAS media library it just works. It makes me smile when I put my music on - and considering that these are not budget systems you must be confident it can do that for you the next few years. The Evo 75 did that for me - you may hate it.
One really, really important thing you forgot to mention (and it's a surprising omission given the "touchscreen touchscreen touchscreen" rant!) is the remote control that comes with this thing - it's an absolute beauty. I've had the good fortune of trialling the EVO 150 here in the UK, and whilst I'm not convinced by the whole all-in-one thing (though the Naim Uniti is a better option if you must go down that route), the remote control was one of those that you remember using. I disagree completely too with the whole touchscreen demand - even from your video I was itching to get a microfibre cloth to wipe away the greasy finger marks on the display!
The remote is beautiful to look at and feels good in the hand but it’s a) reminiscent of B&O remotes from the 80/90’s and is virtually impossible to use in dimly lit rooms. Beautiful design but not wholly functional in all situations.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews I don't feel a resemblance to the old B&O remotes is a bad thing - we have mobiles/tablets if you want a touchscreen interface experience, but for those who like a bit of solid heft in the hand, then the Cambridge remote feels lovely. Though maybe that's just me! I thought it was simple enough to use - pronounced volume and function buttons were tactile and placed where you'd expect them - though again I didn't use in a dim room, so I take your point. Wasn't unhappy to see it go back, I don't feel bereft without it.
I'm with Kristi on this one! Can't stand laid back, clinical, flat sound! Just REALLY hard finding equipment that gives you that "forward", "detailed", yet "rich" sound!
Discussion was nice touch, enjoyed it Andrew :) , it would be cool see Christi facial expressions as well !!! but sound was awesome, so good job in mixing these two channels :D
this touch screen thing, is a none starter.... your telling me you get up from your chair to change tracks every time..... nope you use your mobile......? that your making it an issue in a reveiw...... i want to know how it sounds
You guys really missed the point here. A touch screen is awful. It shows fingerprints and all owners would be doing is trying to keep it clean. There's just no advantage AT ALL to a touch screen. Who even messes with their amp face when they have a remote and apps? The level of detail from the 150 is on a significantly higher level and soundstage is also broader. Is it more clinical? Depends on your speakers. The 150 does a better job with the Magnepan's and also sounds more lively with my Duevel Planets. The Atom is, to my ears, a colored sounding component that sounds a bit too dark. These are all great components, but speakers and rooms along with varying tastes will be a factor in which are chosen.
Out of the Uniti Atom, Evo 150, and NAD M33, I ended up with the M33 driving my Heresy IVs. It's definitely a but more expensive so I don't know if the comparison is fair, but where the 150 kind of failed the "musicality" test for Class D, the M33 excelled (for me), even over the Atom. I do hope to see your take on the M33 one day!
So glad to hear that your mom is at home and recovering. SO GLAD! My own mom passed a month ago yesterday from _ _ _ _ _ and was in the hospital when it happened. I hope you cherish her and let her know how much she means to you and how she positively changed your life over the years. I didn't get to do that this year. Remember, everybody, to tell you loved ones how much they mean to you and how you appreciate them. Don't let the hustle and bustle of life be the reason you don't.
@d c I am so sorry to hear about your mother. I will admit there was a moment where I thought my own mother was not going to make it out of the hospital. She's very lucky and I'm very grateful she did. My heart goes out to you and your family because I know not everyone has been as fortunate.
I can’t remember the last time I adjusted my music from the amp. Adding a touch screen adds cost but no value. You already have a touchscreen - your phone!
To me the non-touch screen is a non-issue, but a dry upper frequency range and lack of warmth is a deal breaker. I actually thought Hypex NCore would be more convincing than your comments suggest, given some other well-regarded products that use those same modules. However, premium HiFi brands are known to use their analog pre-amp design choices to "voice" amplifiers that use class-D modules, so perhaps this where the difference lies?
Happy Mother’s Day from Hamilton, ON. I hope that Andrew’s Mom is getting better and that you are both having a great Sunday. Now to go order dinner so it shows up before 9pm!!
I will always choose amp with quality mechanical controls to touchscreen of NAD M10 for example. In my opinion touchscreen is preferable only in mobile devices.
Are you gonna be able to try some of the Linn DSM? Should be a good competitor in the category. I have a Majik DS-I from almost 10 years ago that I'm still using today and was very glad that it's been updated to support Spotify and AirPlay.
I prefer a clean, non-touch screen to a touch screen but covered in fingerprints. But I can not ignore the sound at all and it needs to be heard closely
Great and really helpful video, as I'm about to purchase either the EVO or the ATOM. The advantage of the EVO is that the EVO 75 is £700/$1000 cheaper than the ATOM.
Bwahaha. Touché. As someone that just opened this Pandora's box of stereo audio I had KEFs lx50 ii and the naim in my proverbial cart.... But then saw this product announced and "reviewed" (they were marketing pitch garbage).. So I waited for this review. Then watched more of your videos... And landed on the Kantu YU6 per your rec of going about this habit/rabbithole/"lifestyle" incrementally. So thanks for doing what you do.
I liked it too. It was subtle and unexpected to actually hear music on one of your reviews. btw, thank you for never recording audio from the gear you’re reviewing. It’s meaningless on RUclips and I’ve always appreciated that you don’t do it.
Very glad to hear your mum is doing well Andrew. Thanks for the review. I haven’t listened to the NAD M33 yet but I have it at the top of my list for all in one amplifier. Will be giving it a trial soon. Cheers.
Not an issue for me the touch-screen. Even I don't like them at all for some uses (either in my car or in an HiFi system where you mainly handle the device through your phone or tablet touch screen). On the other hand, yes I would like in these screens more imformation about the music when you are listening (the audio format, the rip sampling (bit/KHz) or the data being downloaded (kbps)) Thank you for your channel
I think you do an excellent job of balancing your observations. This is a consistent feature of your reviews & one of the reasons I appreciate your work.
My vote for best Integrated streamer/amp is the Linn Selekt DSM - and that's coming from someone that used to own a Naim Uniti Star - the big brother of the Atom (with built in CD plater/ripper). The Linn also have a very good MM/MC phono stage for vinyl junkies.
Interesting. I asked my local shop (Linn and Naim dealers) and as I already have an Atom and was looking for room correction that was what they recommended. I was expecting it to be Linn prices but it's not out of the question.
New improved Bluesound Powernode is out now with 80 watts and a supposedly better dac. Be nice to see if you like it better now and compare it to the Naim and EVO. thanks
I've gained so much information from your straightforward reviews, equal to the reviews I appreciate the product imagery you provide. Thanks for your hard work 😎👍 I've still got my fingers crossed for the ls50 wireless ii review. (Posswith the kc62 as the icing on the cake)
Great review, I really learned a lot. The discussion worked really well I thought, it really helped illuminate the different amp classes, their characteristic sound, and where the EVO fell within that.
It's just that a high-level amplifier will remain a high-level amplifier in 50 years, and the presented electronic "whistle-making" will no longer be supported at the software level in 5-6 years and, accordingly, will turn into a pumpkin. The same can be said about the screen, which in 3 years will turn pink / blue / green, fill up, throw out a bunch of dead pixels, etc., and its replacement will rise to 70% of the cost of a new device ... Painfully familiar, though : -)
+10 for the shirt! Always a great review 🙂. Regarding the touch screen, I think the question is how often would it actually be used? The unit might be tucked away or the owner might not want to be cleaning fingerprints all the time. With the advent of a remote control, people just don't want to get up if they don't have to. The bigger issue might be the treble presentation.
I think Class D can compete and can sound as good as A or A/B, but I just haven't gotten that sound from Hypex. I feel Cambridge should've gone with ICE Power or developed their own platform. I honestly think they could've put the amp section out of their AVA series and been maybe better off and retained their signature sound.
I’ve been waiting for this one! I like Kristi’s point that most of us haven’t owned the Atom and therefore don’t have that reference point or connection to it as the “reigning champ”. Most of us who don’t have experience with the atom who might be looking for an all in one, view the Atom and EVO equal competitors and I can see someone being very happy with whichever they choose. 100% this should have come with a touch screen! Would it require more processing power to keep one from feeling laggy or do they have a higher failure rate? I wonder why they didn’t include one… I think I prefer the styling of the EVO personally. One day when things open up here, I’d like to hear these side by side in store. Stay safe and stay kind!
If you haven't heard either then I would urge you to check out all options for yourself as your opinion(s) may or will likely differ from my own. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the review. Having previosly used a Cambridge streamer, i moved to a Naim Atom and have never been happier, but I was obviously interested in how this unit turned out. If i had to take a punt on which amp would sound best to me, I would have picked Naim every time, so nice to know im likely to feel this if i heard the Cambridge unit. Another good video, thank you!
Just bought the EVO 150 and quite pleased with it. I agree about the neutral sound - it replaced an Arcam FMJ A32 - but glad it doesn't have a touch screen. It's controlled from an old iPad, which I've dedicated to use as a remote. I listen to internet radio most of the time and it works really well. Speakers are Spendor A5R. Gripes: I'd like the volume knob to have more 'feel' - it turns to easily and either detents or oil damping would give it a much more classy touch. Shame you can't change the icons on the source menu - the CD input is either a pair of RC plugs or an optical pentagon.
Firstly, I'm glad your Mother is recovering well and I hope all the Moms out there had a great Mother's Day. Next, what is this fixation on a touchscreen? I guess you guys are too young, mmm. Back in 1988, I was soooo happy my new pre-amp had a remote, so I could switch sources or adjust the volume from across the room. Now with my newer equipment and a control app on my Android phone, what is not to love? I still worry about seeing the display from across the room, but even that isn't really that important, with the app in hand. And if I'm using a tablet as the controller, it's even more better, eh? The only time I would be standing next to my pre-amp / receiver is to change or flip a LP. I think you guys need to buy a chair or a sofa for your living room and sit down for better musical enjoyment and stop hovering in front of the system. Just chill. :-) BTW, love the videos and getting Kristy's input on the products.
Good review but so surprising you make such a big deal about the lack of touch screen - it’s clearly an intentional choice. Tactile physical controls are vastly preferable to me for a product like this. A big draw to me is to be able to see the album art when enjoying music and having smudgy fingerprints on it continually would not be desirable whatsoever.
I honestly no longer have a foverite. Used to be Denon. Now I'm honestly to far out of the "game". I don't devote time, as you do, toward comparing and possible upgrading what I currently have in my system. I don't scratch that itch. Mote to the point the itch is way in the back ground. You guys are what remains. NAD, you mentioned ive had high regaurd for. And Macintosh rounds my big three... Today I currently have a Yamaha and has risen greatly. (I bought one) Nice job!
Jack, I would say you've reached the hifi promise land, for anytime you can back off "needing" gear and just enjoy the music and what you have, you've arrived. Thanks for tuning in this morning!
If i have to describe this amp in one word, lean. I was rather disappointed by its sound quality. Sold it and bought Marantz 40n, night and day. Marantz sounds more detailed, clean, and warm. Very happy with the switch.
It’s not only the knowledge that you have, but the outstanding storytelling that nailed me on this channel binge watching it since I became an audiophile. Still waiting for the Formation wedge, bar, flex and bass review though…
I do wonder whether neutral sounding kit (like the 150) are sometimes called lean or flat. I’ve bought one and compared it to other amps like Roksan and Yamaha etc and think they all colour the sound whereas the Evo 150 just sounds more “accurate” to me. Have we got used to coloured sound rather than accurate? Don’t know but can’t help but wonder.
I don't understand so much discussion about the touchscreen in a product like that. In fact, it seems to me a nonsense if you have a remote control as is the case. The touchscreen only serves to smudge the screen with fingerprints. I consider this is a biased review with a clear influence and love to the Naim.
Great review! I’m a wannabe audiophile and recently got the PS Audio Sprout100 integrated amp, Audiolab 6000CDT paired with Elac UB52. I’m impressed with the quality, but would love to see your thoughts/reviews on these. Thanks!
Do you like your setup? If so, that is ALL that matters. But I will take a look at your wish list and see if any of those products are a good fit for the channel. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for another great, honest and informative review. I thought the CXA61 is a sure contender for the upgrade of my system, but after I heard a few comments you made about it while talking with Kristie, I will certainly think twice.
I wonder how often a touch screen would get used when your using an app interface anyway. Your maybe a bit hung up on that but love the vids I’m learning a lot!
Andrew, what's your thought for how viable of a product these expensive all-in-ones are going to in say the year 2030? I mean we don't even know if the streamer will support music services or the mobile app will be around five years down the road. I like the idea of an all-in-one but practical me says most would be better off with buying a quality amplifier that could last decades and periodically swapping out with a cheaper but relevant DAC/Streamer every five years or so. I like what Naim, NAD, and Cambridge are doing here...but the lack of longevity for an all-in-one at this price point is too much of a hurdle for me to overcome.
I am with you on this. ‘Firmware’ type devices run out of support after 5-8 years+- and many tend to start to fail by then. Granted it was a cheapo pce of kit, but my sonos connect end like this. As beautiful and cool as they are, I am really leery of these new all in one units for the long haul. A good amp can last a long time and something makes me feel more comfortable adding streaming separates to one. And no one ever seems to discuss or consider it.
@@stevehamilton3181 I definitely don't want to take the joy from anyone that makes the purchase. I'd buy one if I wasn't so cheap. I think there is customer demand for good all-in-one's but I don't think it's additional features people are waiting for (admittedly a touch screen would help) but a lower price that justifies the purchase of a potentially short-lived product.
So here's my issue with this product. I'm a CXNv2, XA81 and CXC separates owner. Nobody appears to be saying the Evo sounds as good as the CX range and audio stores have been offering some very good deals on streamer, CD transport and CXA81 amp. So this product is really about saving space, HDMI port & a neater design. If the budget stretched there's the Uniti Nova which can drive almost anything and sounds better than the Uniti Atom and the CX set. The CX set isn't much more expensive than the Evo 150. Cambridge's older Azur amp sounds just a bit nicer and richer than the CXA81 to my ears, except for soundstage width and that's about 9 years old. Then there's the NAD offerings. Leave the touchscreen aside, it doesn't seem this product delivers sonically. It's not exactly a bargain price.
You literally hit upon a conversation Kristi and I had AFTER filming while taking our dog on a walk yesterday. As good as the EVO 150 is for the right person, for me, it raises a lot more questions than it answers. Thanks for watching!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews You & Kirsti's reviews are great. This seems a missed opportunity for Cambridge Audio however. Chromecast built in, attractive design & HDMI could have made this a winner. Hopefully you will get to review the NAD M series soon.
I received the 150 yesterday and will return it. Honestly, after A/Bing it against the CXA60 I have, it definitely is not as full or rich sounding. It’s thinner. My wife noticed it right away. It’s really nice looking but the sound just isn’t there…
NAD has some terrific all-in-one solutions, as well as Linn. Cant really agree that the only good solution is the Unity Atom, although it is a very very good compontent.
Great video Andrew and agree. I had an Evo and really liked it but just wasn't quite there. For me biggest miss apart from touch screen was Dirac or similar. Lifestyle systems are about convenience and so I think big miss to leave that out given this and the slot into living room nature. I returned mine and went instead for CXA81 and Qutest. Saved £600 and not much different in terms of hideaway ability.
Love the video and both of your input. I'm so sorry to hear about your mom 😞. Happy Birthday to Darren Hayes! Fucking angel, he is ❤❤ Love that man. I saw your video a while back about how his OUT OF THIS WORLD music & voice helped you through hard times, and I related to that so much. I'm 34, so I've been such a huge fan for 24 years now. When I saw your Instagram chat with Darren a little while back, I was so excited to find out that you are actually friends! He is just so lovely and such a sweet person with the perfect touch of hilarious raunchy-ness. I left you guys a couple of comments on Twitter. In case you don't remember, I'm the Robyn fanatic. Again, great video. Thanks!!
Another great review - not just the "it's so awesome with new colorful metaphors" review. Comparative, with thoughtful analysis. I'm probably in the "AB Bitch" camp. I would highly recommend the Schiit Aegir amp for any others in this fun group. If you haven't heard that amp yet, I would recommend it. I think Kristi would love it. I have Aegir monoblocks powering Buchardt S400s. After 25 years in this game, I don't think I've enjoyed music more. Last comment, now I'm looking forward to an NAD review as supposedly they have a more musical class D implementation. Edit: sorry, Kristi has a name and is here, I shouldn't be a jerk and reference her in 3rd person 🙂
I have watched quite a few reviews, and nobody talks about the HDMI ARC functionality. I want a good integrated where I use my TV as a hub. I use my stereo as much for TV, movies and console play as I do music listening. Can you control the volume with the TV-remote? Is there any delay/lip sync issues?
Watching this because the screen on my Naim Uniti Star stopped working immediately after a firmware update in October. Very minimal support or interest from Naim. Quite frustrating when you’ve spent $6k on a piece of gear. Bummer is I have two Naim Mu-so units, too, so a big investment there for whole-house sound. Not sure where to go from here.
@@barrymiller3385 Central Kentucky, USA. The closest dealer (a couple of hours away, but from whom I did not buy this unit) eventually gave me the correct support number for Naim/Focal support in the US. Once I got on their books, I was able to send the unit in for repair. I got it back about 3 weeks later. It's still in the shipping box, since I replaced it while it was out (had no idea how long it would take, and expected the worst). I now have a decision to make -- move forward with my replacement electronics, or put the Naim back in.
I assume you’ve tried Qobuz? After comparing Tidal to Qobuz over the last 2 years, I definitely prefer Qobuz sound, even if Tidal has a much slicker format. I still pay for both and find it worth it so far. If I had to choose, I’d go with Qobuz for the sound quality.
In the $3k price range, I would probably look at a more traditional A/B integrated that supports full digital interfaces. For about $600 more you can get something like the Cary Audio SI-300.2D. Not a lifestyle piece like the Evo - but gets you 300 watts per channel of Class A/B power, a Class A analog preamplifier, and a 2 channel AK4490EQ DAC. For an all in one system I would like to see you review the Cary Audio AiOS. 2 x 75W RMS Class A/B power with music streaming. Much more a lifestyle piece for about $2.4k.
Very in depth review! Benchmark reviews every time! Answer to your question... I see three versions of integrated Amps... NAD C338, NAIM Unity Atom and an Integrated Amp like Cambridge Audio AX A35 or NAD C316 v2 plus a Streamer like Arylic S10(or similar)...
I dont see the lack of a touchscreen as being an issue. Most of the time this would be located away from the user (e.g. on a cabinet on the opposite side of a room) and they're encouraging the use of the app as a remote which makes a touchscreen somewhat pointless.
Then why give it such a large screen with illuminated buttons that don't do anything? They want you to interact with this, but you can't. Thanks for watching!
Another great review. I’d like to see that M33 review. Looking forward to it. These class D amps need a “class AB switch” that adds a digital filter which fattens up the sound - like some ladder DACs have.
Have an M10 with a touch screen and has 2 sub outs. Look forward to your review. The BluOS app is so smooth with the M10. Sound is pretty darn good. Would not switch to Naim or Evo over the M10.
I was hoping to see this review. One feature forgotten that really matters to me was USB DAC. Pure neutral is alright, because there are no shortage of rich speakers.
Great review and video again and again 😎 I understand the dilemma about the class D sound and can relate! For months I have had a cambridge class XD, the azur 851w power amp connected to my streamer Yamaha wxc-50 running my Dali Helicon400’s. Today I connected my “new” oldschool Denon PMA2000AE, and what a difference! Looking forward for your next video ❤️
I am wondering how you think these things will perform in terms of user experience in a few years? One point is pure functionality, e.g. the touchscreen you are mentioning, but more importantly sheer processing power that probably will be required. I am still rocking an almost 8 year old iPad Air for youtube, reading, and light gaming. However, each app takes (perceived) ages to load and multitasking is neigh impossible. As a dedicated device that still has its dearly loved place in my daily life I think it may still have a year or two in it, but then it will have to be replaced. Now, back to these super-integrated amps - if they become laggy or turn out to be unable to support important new functionality down the road, it would pain me to have to retire all that great (and expensive) audio circuitry just because the software part cannot handle the changing demands.
Device review priorities
1- Does it have HDMI ARC?
2- Does it have a touch screen?
Well, let's continue to check the rest...
Zooming in on a feature that is not necessary compared to the strengths of this device and is very tasteful.IMO
Right... personally i like buttons, less stuff to go wrong 10years down the road
F..k the touch screen, who need it? I need HDMI arc
I'm surprised by the weight given to the lack of a touch screen. I know in my living room I would never touch it as I would be using remotes and Roon.
I agree. The phone IS the touch screen.
exactly!
I don't get the infatuation with touchscreens. I'd rather have tactile buttons any day.
What speakers did you test them with?
I’m going to purchase the Evo hoping that it sounds good with the 705 S 2. just spoke to somebody on Crutchfield comparing the Evo up against another amplifier . Thanks again for your thoughts.
Hey Andrew! Very well done video! I just picked up rhe EVO 150 and paired it with my Dynaudio Emit 30's, they sound incredible! Very punchy, articulate and the soundstage is massive.
I agree it’s a great all in one unit
Many hifi enthusiasts still don’t like touchscreens. Personally I’m happy Cambridge still goes this way. Who wants a touch experience, has the full range of operability through the app via iOS or Android
Fingerprints are ugly. Much prefer tactile buttons. Only issue is if it’s difficult to use.
The wife gets to pick the house. She can choose the colour of the walls, the floor, the curtains or blinds and the kitchen units. The bedsheets or the plates and the bathroom tiles. I don't care about any of that. I could live in a cave as long as I had my music system.
I only care about Two things. The TV and the HiFi and and She dare not even give an opinion.
Delighted to hear your Mum will be making a recovery Andrew. Take care Mrs Robinson.
Appreciate that, James.
I totally agree. Fingerprint city.
-Andrew
Hey Andrew, I really like work and watching most of your videos made me fall in love with your tri-pod speaker standers. Do you know how I may get it?
@@herbpaxton9537 You'll find them in the description.
Same here, I think it’s a great compact unit.
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
I was looking to get this receiver for my 705S 2 B&W, Thank you for your thoughts and feedback.
@@jlappin6277 I'd definitely want to listen to that combo before parting with any money, or at least have return & refund options.
The Atom has Chromecast built in.
@@rich.e really? well it sure never used to. I sold the Atom years ago.
Personally I like the separation clean black screen without fingerprints and hard buttons.
Andrew and Kristi, youre starting my Sunday out good!!! Annnnd, I am in the class A camp too. Solidly. Neutrality or clinical sound is boring. Also, glad the biggest Mother's Day gift today is that your Momma is home and on her way to recovery. God bless her
Good to see you!
So glad you've stopped by this morning! Hope you enjoy the review!
We updated the "film set" which is our living room with some different furniture!
I've been waiting for this .
Well, I hope it was worth the wait. Thanks for tuning in this morning!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews atom all the way js ..thx for the review both of you..
@@stevelimey I have heard it and in the process of buying it .
@@stevelimey the atom .
Those Focals are GORGEOUS!!!!!
Agreed. My mom passed away in January. Spent Mother’s Day at the cemetery. Don’t take the precious time you have left for granted!
@d c I am so sorry to hear about your mother. I will admit there was a moment where I thought my own mother was not going to make it out of the hospital. She's very lucky and I'm very grateful she did. My heart goes out to you and your family because I know not everyone has been as fortunate.
@JPeace116 My condolences.
As always, thanks for being not just informative but entertaining. We all need to see Christy's T-Shirt when you get it lol.
Morning everybody! We appreciate you stopping by to hang out with us today. Enjoy the review and Happy Mother's Day to those who cared for you!
Atom I would imagine to be better built honestly.

Bwahaha.
Oh, more explicitly than what my above comment implied.... this was an honest review - which I expect here.
The guitar track in the conclusion was a nice touch! As always, thanks for the great review.
Thanks for noticing. Trying something different.
On the other hand, yes I would like in these screens more imformation about the music when you are listening (the audio format, the rip sampling (bit/KHz) or the data being downloaded (kbps))
Thank you for your channel
I don't understand this love for touchscreens. In practice they can be fiddly and seem to be a nemesis for drivers using audio in cars...?
I have the 75 version of this - the screen is not a touch screen - I share your hate though - aaaahhh fingerprints.......
@@nelsonclub7722 Also modern technologies does not necessarily mean improvement in use as it was in the good old days...

Great review, I really learned a lot. The discussion worked really well I thought, it really helped illuminate the different amp classes, their characteristic sound, and where the EVO fell within that.
Who is going to be using the touchscreen. Not a missed opportunity at all.
Great review. This thing looks pretty incredible.
Thank you!
Good points 👍
Im a huge Cambridge fan but Class D is a generation away from displacing AB for me.
I have an AXA25 and 35 and I love their pure AB sound.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Agree 100% they should develop their own Class D.
Thank you for the review! I value your honest opinion.
One of the most detailed reviewers (not just audio products) out there!
I wonder why they didn’t include one…
I think I prefer the styling of the EVO personally.

Glad you hear you're enjoying your Atom! Thanks for watching!
Can't wait for your review of the Focal Diablo Utopia's!
Shame you can't change the icons on the source menu - the CD input is either a pair of RC plugs or an optical pentagon.
it turns too easily, it is a pity that the modern education system fails so many.
Just chill. :-)
BTW, love the videos and getting Kristy's input on the products.
(I bought one)
Nice job!
Jack, I would say you've reached the hifi promise land, for anytime you can back off "needing" gear and just enjoy the music and what you have, you've arrived. Thanks for tuning in this morning!
I would love to see Yamaha make something like this (if they haven't already) because I'm a big fan of their sound.
If i have to describe this amp in one word, lean. I was rather disappointed by its sound quality.
Sold it and bought Marantz 40n, night and day. Marantz sounds more detailed, clean, and warm. Very happy with the switch.
How are you liking the Marantz? I’m thinking of buying one but the heos app is holding me back. I wish it had tidal connect. Any issues with heos?
It’s not only the knowledge that you have, but the outstanding storytelling that nailed me on this channel binge watching it since I became an audiophile. Still waiting for the Formation wedge, bar, flex and bass review though…
I do wonder whether neutral sounding kit (like the 150) are sometimes called lean or flat. I’ve bought one and compared it to other amps like Roksan and Yamaha etc and think they all colour the sound whereas the Evo 150 just sounds more “accurate” to me. Have we got used to coloured sound rather than accurate? Don’t know but can’t help but wonder.
Excellent review as always! Thanks
Thanks for tuning in!
I don't understand so much discussion about the touchscreen in a product like that. In fact, it seems to me a nonsense if you have a remote control as is the case. The touchscreen only serves to smudge the screen with fingerprints. I consider this is a biased review with a clear influence and love to the Naim.
I’ve never seen a review by Andrew that isn’t negative about Cambridge. He doesn’t like their products, it’s obvious
I don't have a dog in this hunt but I have to agree with you. AR came off surprisingly biased against the Cambridge. Not his finest effort.

Excellent review. All in one solution is what I am looking for.
I am hoping for a Hegel review? Maybe the H95?
Noted! I'll take a look at Hegel to see if anything strikes our fancy.
I will google the Hegel and see if it's something we should put on the channel. Thanks for tuning in!
Interesting video. I prefer to use a remote or mobile device as remote so I would never walk over and use a touch screen anyway.
Waiting patiently for your Focal Diablo review.
A very interesting review. I think it looks stunning. I’m glad you javelin remained objective. Fantastic overview...well done.
Hope you get to review the EVO1 soon. Thanks
It’s really nice looking but the sound just isn’t there…
Thanks for sharing. We felt largely the same.
Cxa 60 Is hard top beat!!!
Separates are always superior, this is a convenient unit, all in one. No comparison
Yes you can control vol w TV remote and no no sync issues.
to control volume with TV remote is the MAIN function of an HDMI ARC..
Why would you need a touch screen if you will control it 99% of times using your smartphone. All what matters is sound quality.
They didn’t put a touch screen because they don’t want to have dirty screen fingerprints on display.
Whereabouts do you live Mike? It is normally the dealer that will handle a repair of the type you mention.
@@mike.thomas Well I guess the answer is to have a listen to both and decide which you prefer.
I also had problems with my Naim gear. Got rid of all my Naim units, very unreliable.
@@mike.thomas
Sell it
Personally I much prefer buttons to a touch screen. This is such a sweet unit. Thanks!
99% of people prefer the Qobuz sound quality. And what?
I’m a Class A/B guy too. I’d love Kristi to hear Parasound’s Halo line. Class A/B that tends to be a bit neutral to warm. Do the Halo Integrated!
Andrew Robinson marketing
@@TheDecguy I'd suspect its more so that they're visible at a distance. So you can see what is going on with the unit whilst seated.
Excellent review as always❤️ seems like I'm still sticking to class ab amp from the time being.
Another great review.
I’d like to see that M33 review. Looking forward to it.
These class D amps need a “class AB switch” that adds a digital filter which fattens up the sound - like some ladder DACs have.
I have been told an M33 is in route to us. Stay tuned!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews very looking forward to this, it's on my shortlist. Any chance you could review the HiFi Rose products? 150 or 250?
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Still tuned!
😶
😁
Have an M10 with a touch screen and has 2 sub outs. Look forward to your review. The BluOS app is so smooth with the M10. Sound is pretty darn good. Would not switch to Naim or Evo over the M10.
And Dirac Live Room Correction advantage! Which speakers are you using?
M10 is the clear winner here
If you're wanting all in one... I like my seperates
Have you heard the Evo? The NAD sounds dull and mushy by comparison. The Naim beats both.
@@gorillapancake u keep writing "dull and mushy". Do u have some cleaner expression that can explan difference and define sound
If you can get a chance to your hands on SimAudio Moon Ace, it would be a good review.
Agreed, a sales guy at our local store saw the ACE and EVO150 as direct competitors
Happy Mother's Day Kristi 🌺
Great content Andrew!
I would love to have your opinion on the Lyngdorf, NAD, Anthem, LINN and Simaudio equivalents. That would be one heck of a showdown.
Excelent. Thank you! I'm waiting for your review of the Hegel H95 🤔
Another ✅. for the Hegel. Will look into it. I fear they've been reviewed to death but let me see.
@@andrewrobinsonreviews I too would like to hear your take on the Hegel.
All the best to your Mum.
What is a touch screen for? Really a weird review.
