- Vancouver is the largest North American city without ride-hailing apps like Uber or Lyft. Until now. The provincial government recently announced that it would be accepting applications from ride-hailing apps later this fall. Why has it taken so long for Vancouver to introduce these apps? Uytae takes a deep dive into the issue and finds a dilemma behind the scenes that involves a fundamental belief we’ve held about the taxi industry since the 1930s.

I dont live in Vancouver nor have I ever been there but I thoroughly enjoy these videos.
Why not just change the rules so taxi's can pick up people on return trips back. So if a taxi takes someone from Vancouver to Langley picks someone up in Langley and takes them to Surrey then picks up one in Surrey and takes them to Vancouver there back in there city limits. Why even have city limits on taxi's ?
One thing not addressed in the video was the impact on transit. Vancouver's usage of transit is much higher than almost every other city in North America, however, it's been shown that Ride Hailing Apps tend to siphon away transit users.
Uber is cheap because I make below minimum wage driving it. Cab drivers ensure they actually get a decent wage.
We face the same issue during summertime as Uber drivers. Way too many drivers on the street and not enough passengers. Some days I barely made $10/hr

My mom and I got back to Vancouver from the airport late at night. We rode the skytrain all the way downtown, and by then it was late at night or even in the morning. I'm not sure if the buses were even running. Anyways, we waved down a taxi, and he asked where we were going and we said the West End. My mom is 70 years old and we had 1 piece of luggage. And the driver refused us and drove off.
A way to remove a lot of the taxi availability problem is to pass provincial laws making it unlawful for the cities to sell taxi licenses so all of the taxis within the province can collect fares in any city within the province.
Great job. Do it also for flights. Turkish and qatar airlines tried so much to have direct flight to Vancouver but canada flight lobbying to stop them.

just spoke to a taxi driver about the new BC regulations on ride hailing yesterday. The driver thought that the taxi companies are too fragmented. They are not strong enough...
Agreed bro, not to mention the 700$ course you need to take thru the ministry of justice just to get a chauffeur’s permit. Also taking the days of to goto ICBC to get your permit issued and let’s not even start about the by annual physical. It’s not cheap bro!

I think Vancouver should definitely look into what Austin was able to accomplish in the year Uber and Lyft left after Austin imposed driver background check and safety regulations, before the fascist state of Texas took away the municipality's right to regulate. In just a couple weeks, a non-profit, open-source workers cooperative called RideAustin launched and completely filled the gap, with a better and more equitable model than yellow cabs ever had.
How about another video tying the same market forces that drove up the price of taxi medallions to restrictive zoning laws driving up the cost of housing? I do like your videos but feel that often you are the voice of the status quo when big systemic changes are what is needed.

We're getting Lyft and Uber because cab drivers are terrible and have no accountability. What other industry can you act like cab drivers without getting fired?!
Rideshare drivers are cab drivers I don't get your point you don't think no cab drivers from the old school are driving for Uber I don't get it. Rideshare drivers are taxi drivers with no regulations now it's a real free for all
The other problem is lyft and uber cheat the drivers by very low rates

Like many people on this thread, Mr Lee presented another quality and informative piece. I have watched his other vids and urge others to do so also.
Uber and Lift and the west really need to learn a thing about Grab and Didi and their cooperation with local taxi industries and ride sharing regulations.
Uber is cheaper because they use predatory pricing and undercut competitors (they lost 5 billion last quarter alone). Other times when you need a ride the most, they gouge you.
Exactly the same thing is happening as in the 1930s with cabs is happening with the unlimited/deregulated Uber cars. Uber's own drivers are protesting poor working conditions. Reports of assaults on a near daily basis in the US. No one makes a living. The exact same thing is happening with Uber today at 8:43 of your report that was happening in the 30's with cabs. As they say, history repeats itself.
Your piece was getting good, but fell short at connecting the dots at that point.
Ohhhhh I LOVE this conclusion. You're absolutely right, one could definitely make the case that what we're seeing today (competition between Uber & the taxi industry but also other ride-hailing apps like Lyft, DiDi, and Ola) is basically another price war where the losers are ultimately the drivers themselves. Brilliant.

Uber is not 40% cheaper in Kitchener/Waterloo. Actually Taxi is cheaper than Uber in Kitchener. Where do you get facts? In San Francisco, Hundreds of jobs loss in the taxi industry. 2 large taxi closed up there. It doesn't really matter Uber will soon run out money and go under or they increase their prices and nobody will use them. It's already started.
funfact: part of the reason why ridesharing (such as Uber or Lyft) was banned because all of the taxi company are lobbying the government, Dening the rise of any type of those ride sharing service available to the public and trying to press them down.
Also, you either make an appointment before, or you just need to wait for the average time to wait for a taxi of 30min to 1 hour+ of time during busy hour. Other than that there could be shenanigans like refused to pick you up, take other because it's faster& quicker then turn back to pick you up yet you are first in the queue.
So yeah, not only is it very unfriendly, but it also it unfriendly to some of the disabled people who needs to get back to home without their method of transport ( eg a bus). They don't care what they would be paying, they just care the speed to home. Thus when taxi company would require a wait of minimum 24min with no cap, who is it truly benefitting?
interest involved: was temporarily disabled and waited for an agonizing 1 hour trying to get home after a grocery shopping trip.
So THAT'S why those NYC cabbies killed themselves...I did not know why before this. Thanks.
To me the solution is simple...get the government OUT of the taxi business. Let free enterprise reign. And if Vancouver cabbies lose a ton of money --- tough. It's called 'life'. You enter ANY business and you take a chance. You don't like it - don't go into it.

Taxi drivers riot about there being too many taxi drivers, so the government's solution is to essentially restrict those taxi drivers from being taxi drivers, lowering the number of taxi drivers. In a way they were calling for their own heads without knowing it rofl... it probably would have been more preferable for everyone, including the rioting taxi drivers, if they just adapted instead of sticking to their current way of life. I'm not sure what they thought they would have gained from that.
I guess that's just human nature. I wonder if the topic of pollution and climate change is similar to this. Theoretically we should be able to not fuck our world on our own, but it seems like we can't.
I dont understand whoever is making these kind of videos why they dont make these videos on weekdays Sunday-Thursday. On these days 50% taxis are always free even there is a event in weekdays as there is not nough calls ir hails available . So even vancouver have uber or lyft this scene on granvile street will remain same on weekends as per you never drove a cab so you dont know the real facts . Brother man you have a misunderstanding of the taxi and rideshare business.Rideshare is not the taxi drivers competition, the taxi cab company they drive for is the drivers competition.Taxi drivers have no problem competing with rideshare, the problem is competing with a million unregulated rideshare vehicles on every block with no reasonable controls in place. Rideshare is simply people hitchhiking with an app. If you can understand that basic economic concept then you will begin to see the problem more clearly. I understand its a hard concept to understand but if your not on the inside you are outside.The business is incredibly non transparent.

Get used to it.... so long as Uber/Lyft keep screwing the drivers more and more, the fewer and fewer drivers so the longer your wait.
So I understand that the passengers are getting treated unfairly.....but if Uber and Lyft come then that will shift to the drivers...they will be slaves....so pick your poison....
I would never visit there for this reason. I have some trans friends there. Seeing this makes me not ever wanna go there.
