From the weavers to shop assistants, this is a film about the beauty of the sari flowing through the gender gaps. Shot across Lucknow, Delhi, Kolkata and Benaras; Sari Men is

The reason I love Q's work is this, he is absolutely original. No pretentious bullshit, nothing. It's not easy to not be influenced by anything but yourself. The kind of films he made over the years from Kolkata gives us a lot of hope that it’s still possible to make arts just to find yourself not for any other purpose.

Such a beautiful documentary on sarees and how comfortable mem are selling them. It only occurred to me now that I have never really seen a woman selling sarees in all my years of walking into a saree shop - wonder why that is. Also made me feel like this is one industry that could have been dominated by women - but the chance was never given to them.

I came here only after watching you in an interview. I love your honest answers.So here's a question for you-
In your film you are talking about the intricate understanding the saree makers have about the nuances of gender. How did you know this? What nuances of gender are you speaking of...Is it that of gender equality or inequality or genderless space as sari can both be worn by men and women? Can you please explain.
P.S- I loved this documentary style work of yours.

What I've observed as a little kid while fooling around in boutiques while amma made those purchases is that these places, especially when they're making and selling them in the same location, there is energy that cannot be recreated. It's this mix of matriarchy and patriarchy that transcends every other thing that is happening outside the doors of that location. Magical, and Q...thanks for recording it in such a poignant way!

Very interesting concept Q da... People who guard their sexuality might get triggered by watching masculine men being comfortable putting on a saree without any inhibitions. Saree sellers masculinity totally unharmed by their profession. Does this draw a thin line between a cross dressor's profession and theirs ? Because one is perfectly fine and the other is a taboo ?
