TBH as an IELTS teaching in China - this is not a million miles away from the truth - the one word answers - and yes the number of students who answer "China" to the question, "Where do you live?" - when we are already IN China is uncountable , as are the boys who answer "Basketball" to my question "describe your hobbies" (Sleeping is the No 2 answer) I will be showing this to my students!

When one is asked this question one should naturally answer with the city or town one lives in. However, if the context changes and the speaker is abroad, one might well answer the question "where do you live?" with "Oh I live in China, in Hangzhou, do you know it?" Saying you live in house or apartment is meaningless unless you are asked that specific question.
