  • A supernatural force known only as the ruin sweeps across the land of Dramark in this Edwardian, steampunk apocalypse TTRPG, Our Brilliant Ruin. Combining upstairs downstairs drama from shows like Bridgerton with a crumbling, hedonistic world on the brink of destruction, Our Brilliant Ruin is a TTRPG like no other!
Wheels, Maddie, and Meehan are joined by Justin from OBR's design team to talk mechanics, create characters, and even show off some gameplay as we learn and play together.
This video was sponsored by Studio Hermitage and Our Brilliant Ruin, currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter right here: www.kickstarte...

The setting sounds interesting but I’ve got to wonder about the dice pool mechanic with equal chance of success and failure. I assume they want to encourage people to pick the most suitable skill and motivation for the moment but it begs the question why bother picking skills and motives at all.

The Passion mechanic lets you both add dice to the pool and expands your success range to 5s and 6s, so for things the player or character REALLY CARES ABOUT, call on your Passion!

I had the same thoughts. It was obviously covered quickly here so maybe there's more to it, but from what I understood here it seems it would be weighted towards failure on standard rolls? Anything less than 6 is a failure so having more dice would help that, but also rolling a 1 negates a success and increasing your dice means you're equally more likely to roll a 1. The passion mechanic would help that, but I got the impression that's limited use.

    An observation.
Does anyone else feel like the creator has been actively avoiding any kind of social commentary with his setting? I get the idea of omitting this kind of thing for your run of the mill fantasy game but when you’ve picked Victorian Steampunk, introduce a rigid political divide within it, and then just tell us, “but there’s no downside to Aristocrats starting a relationship with the Revolutionary.” You’ve just deprived players of some juicy storytelling potential there. What’s more surprising is he used to work for White Wolf of all things.

Its very close but a different point in time. It's the Edwardiam era. Right after the Victorian era. (Queen Victoria died). Capitalism started to rise and the first world War would occur. The early 1900s.

Looks fun! The idea of a society trying to cope without metal is interesting.
