  • Hard Eight kicks off our Paul Thomas Anderson arc as we focus on his first feature length film, which very few people have seen. Boasting a stunning cast of many actors before they became famous, including John C. Reilly, Philip Baker Hall, Gwyneth Paltrow, Samuel L. Jackson, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, the film delivers extraordinary performances. The movie was made on a small $3 million budget and therefore focuses on the dialogue and performances in intimate locations instead of extensive action. Hard Eight serves as a foundation for understanding PTA's oeuvre and we heartily recommend watching it before delving deeper into his catalogue.

I would be interested in a "Thorin picks", "Monte picks" and "Richard picks" arch. Especially one where Monte picks all 4 movies and the two Brits spend 90% of each episode railing him for his selections.

Wait that concept is fire. Monte picks a sleeper pick they go in to shit on but end up loving it on the rewatch

Truly grateful for this show. I've seen so many great movies the past few months I wouldn't've seen or even heard of otherwise. Not just the titular movies, but the ones mentioned in passing during the discussions.
I hope they expand to cover TV-show as well. One of my favorite shows is from the network FX/FXX: You're the Worst. Even if you find the premise of a romcom/anti-romcom uninteresting, it's still worth watching for the performance of the cast and the cinematography alone. The standout cast member is the female lead, Aya Cash. It has great dark humor, "I didn't know it was a school".
Another more current example of a fantastic show is Bill Haders Barry on HBO. It's probably the best paced show I've ever seen. It's full of whiplashes where scenes can go from hilarious one-liners to grim drama.

This was a good watch. Above average movie that you mostly enjoy as you watch it and then it leaves your system until you are reminded of it somehow and you think to yourself "Oh yeah, that was good film".

I have only seen punch drunk love prior to this arc by PTA. I watched this and wasn't as warm on it as the guys were here. I acknowledge the acting, the characters and setting was all really well done but the movie is just too simple, slow and ultimately boring for my taste. Solid 6/10 imo. Really looking forward to the upcoming films. great episode.

Baker Hall is one of the best character actors ever! We don't remember his name because he disappears into roles.

I'll be that smartarse, I watched Hard Eight since I'm a big PTA fan and I subscribe to Thorin's method of going back with directors I like to watch all their films. Add on to that, I love movies in this setting. If anyone else feels the same, the best gambling movie I've ever watched is California Split. Would absolutely love a Robert Altman director series from you guys!

My picks would be Old Boy, the Wailling, Mother and Snowpiercer for the Korean Arch for example.

I love everything by PTA. I glaze the fuck out of his movies, except Licorice Pizza. I think he's a genius, and I've seen all of his movies before this so I'm excited to see what they have to say.

Lol I resent that, I watched this movie for this episode. It was a good movie and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Although at the end it felt like it was lacking a little bit of something. I'm not sure what it was lacking but when I got to the end I felt like something was missing from the movie where if it was filled it would have been a great movie.
